Old Course 2021 Open

In the early stages of planning my first trip over to Scotland in 2021. I was curious if anyone has any idea as to what protocol the ROTA courses follow (assuming St. Andrews would follow something similar) in regards to limiting play in the weeks/month leading up to the event?

But it's not Carnoustie, etc. One thing that may come into play based on actual play of other courses that some of them seem to have announced in the past and others on here have experienced is play on fairways, for example, may be limited to mats during certain time leading up to the event.

Educated guess is when St. Andrews publishes its schedule later in 2020 for 2021 then you look at the busy dates for all the courses and you'll be able to plan accordingly. Maybe it will release some info otherwise and you can watch for that.

IIRC, 2015 they closed TOC to public play 4/5ish weeks out from Open week.

Assuming that holds form, that means you'd need to be by early June or wait until after.

They go to mats in the fairways every winter, how long that lasts into spring depends. Whether they carried it through to the open IDK, but they haven't in the past. Go in September and you won't have to worry about any of it.

royal st georges is mats only as of this november ... i don't think they typically go to mats during the winter ...

 

play is thru june, but i expect it's limited tee times starting in may or so ...

Looking at their busy dates from this year, they were open for regular play the Tuesday after the Dunhill Links Championship finished up. Closed Monday - Monday for the tournament then open the Tuesday following. Granted The Open is a much larger event but there's a good sign!

RSG - like Portrush this year - is a whole different kettle of fish to TOC, as a members club with limited public play to begin with. Heck they're not even allowing 36 hole days at all for visitors this year.
