Yes where applicable he uses stats (facts) to back up his arguments but golf analysts are 100% opinion. Surely this must be clear to everyone but if it isn't trying to protect the audience from their own lack of intelligence isn't the way to go.

We don’t need to hear opinion. “ just the facts ma’am “. If Brandel reported the facts he’d have said “ Reed was found in violation of a rule , and penalized “ ....and that’s the end of it. But he has to add in his view , which is a complete 180 from the view of the rules officials.

Chamblee is not a news reporter. He is a commentator. His job is to give commentary and opinion. And thinking Reed cheated is not a 180 view from the rules official. A rules official would need overwhelming proof of cheating to DQ him. You can believe he likely cheated but there wasn’t enough to prove it at the level to DQ him.

There are different levels of proof. OJ was acquitted in a criminal trial. He was found liable in a civil trial. Anyone can look at the video of what Reed did and see enough to form an opinion.

Although I said I wasn’t sure , I stand corrected. Brandel is a tool no matter who he’s talking about. And I don’t always disagree with the guy. But him blaming Phil for beef shooting a bad score is just ludicrous. Every player has to strike their ball. If you let anyone else effect your score that’s your fault. Swing and miss Brandel.

I dont really agree, I think overall we've gotten too blurred on what is fact and what is opinion/narrative. I do think there are many people who are confused by this. I'm talking overall not just in regards to Brandel or golf. So just on principle I think he should be saying things differently, even if it's just "I believe he was attempting to cheat" instead of "to defend him is to defend cheating"

"Deal with the devil" comment about Reed that Chamblee made was where I thought he went too far but I always understood that his comments on Reed were his opinion. I find Chamblee extremely interesting to listen to even when I disagree with him.

I am finding myself disliking Patrick Reed more and more...not because he cheated (which in my opinion he did) but that his behaviour has resulted in my agreeing with Brandel Chamblee more and more.

 

I am glad that the Golf Channel seems to be backing BC in his opinion, it would be very easy for them to through him under the bus given the threat of litigation but BC is giving him opinion. I accept that that opinion is not in line with the official position but and it should be a big but, whilst it is not possible in the circumstances to prove Reed’s intent anyone with a pair of eyes could see what he was up to.

Oh I agree. I’m not on the normal “I hate Brandel “ bandwagon. I think he’s a smart guy. Smart enough to know his opinion starting the “telephone game” turns into “fact “ via twitter on the other end. But I guess that’s his job ?

I respect him at times since he will eat crow and admit when he’s wrong ( tiger for instance ) , but give me Duval everyday and twice on Sunday over Brandel opinion. If David called him a cheater on record , I’d sit up and take notice , but I know he’s not do that without real proof , which is why I respect his take on most things .

You say that as if 50 % or more of any human who’s ever done things at a very high level doesn’t have narcissistic traits. It’s actually quite a requirement in some ways. Being selfish is at the root of any power play in any arena. As is the unreasonable measure of confidence that they posses. Time and time again we see talented players fail miserably . Usually due to lack of confidence or mental strength in themselves.

 

And i I don’t think his family issues are an automatic inclusion in that . That’s a two sided coin no matter how flat you try to make it. And his parents just hold their hands up and say “ we don’t know what the problem is “. They do. But they aren’t saying. Which points to why he’s disconnected. His behavior is a learned behavior. And they are his teachers.

Sure there are those that get lost in their fame and fortune, lose perspective, believe themselves to be superior beings, but certainly not all. And, at least to me, it decidedly is not a prerequisite―having a narcissistic personality disorder―to becoming a great athlete. What is lacking is the empathy for others in consideration of their actions in a narcissist . There is a difference between the self centeredness needed to be a top level athlete and Narcissistic Pers disorder. I am just saying Reed hits NPD on all 6 of the points/signs.

This isn't a court of law, there is no "proof" (or admittance of guilt) required to accuse someone of cheating.

Cheating quite simply describes various actions designed to subvert rules in order to obtain unfair advantages.

There is little to no doubt that Patrick suffers from some serious mental issues. Probably not the same diagnosis as Bubba Watson, but similar in that he can't control all of his actions or thoughts or behaviors and many times they have control of him. The crazy thing to me about Patrick is that he seems like a likable guy many times in interviews but then we see how messed up in the head he is. Any time a person emancipates themselves from their entire family, especially a mom and dad that didn't commit severe abuse, they are messed up. The fact he doesn't simply own up to his actions that caused him a penalty is just another par for his course. It's a pattern probably going back to at least 5 or 6 years old. This is exactly why I like Brandel.

I suppose these two things are different because the term "cheater" implies intent. The video of Reed's indiscretion sure suggests cheating to me though. He put his club behind the ball several times with a steep angle of approach behind the ball because it was sitting down in a depression, but then he took those practice (back) swings he sweep back low, brushing the sand away. Cheating? Most likely is my vote. Does that give Chamblee the right to call him a cheater? Probably. He's not reporting, he's providing and editorial opinion.
