My Bag for 2020... or at Least to Start!

Recommended Posts

OK, y’all. After 10 years away from competitive golf and therefore basically updating nothing in my bag with any purpose I finally retooled the whole thing. In that 10 year run I probably went 5+ years without playing - and some of those other years I maybe played 2-5 times at most - and basically never changed a single club.

For perspective, I was still playing a Nike SQ driver with a white board shaft ?

I hit a lot of different irons, woods, hybrids, wedges, putters, etc. I even bought some of those and then later decided they aren’t for me. ?

Trial and error, right?

Well, I’m finally 95% happy with the setup. Here it is:

I9XH9Q3L9V21.jpegDriver: Titleist TS2 Driver w/a Hzrdous Smoke 60 gram 6.5 set on D1

3 Wood: Titleist TS2 w/a a ProjectX Even Flow T-1100 75 gram 6.5 set on D1

Driving iron: Titleist U-500 2 iron with a Hzrdous Smoke 90 gram 6.0 shaft

Irons: Titleist TMB irons with ProjectX PSi 6.0 shafts

52 Degree: Vokey SM 7 52-08 F grind and stock shaft

56 Degree: Vokey SM 7 56- 14 F grind and stock shaft

60 Degree: Mizuno 60-06 T7 and stock shaft

Putter: Scotty PhantomX 6 STR

I played Mizuno irons going back 25 years so going Titleist is a change. MP-29s are still one of my favorite irons of all time with few challengers.

I kept the Mizuno L wedge in the bag despite all of the turnover because it just feels so good - I can’t find one I like better. It’s a fantastic club.

The only stick in the bag I’m a little on the fence about is the 56. It has 14 degrees of bounce and I figured I’d give what for me is a higher bounce wedge a try and I’m just a little uncomfortable with it. I’d love to have something like a six degree in all of the wedges - I want stuff I can hit off the parking lot. Personal preference I suppose.

I’m currently -5 over my last 27 holes with this setup at my home club of Riverside CC in PDX - only played 9 today because I’m up in the PNW and it’s COLD. Even dawning the Fratagonia I couldn’t stay warm and for my back that’s no bueno. It’s Theragun time after that.

Cheers, y’all - looking forward to a solid 2020 on the course and hope you guys him em’ straight too!

Fairways and Greens,

HackDaddy

Nice looking bag, how are you finding the T-MBs? I've got a 3 iron that I take out on tight courses or windy days but have never really considered the 4 iron down.

I’m really liking them so far. They have a good look to them and feel very consistent. And between the lofts and being fitted properly I picked up at least a club’s worth of yardage.

I have been a long time Mizuno player going back to the 29’s - wore out multiple sets of their blades. I decided to branch out and try other makes this time around and hit some Taylor Made, PXG, Ping, etc. products that were all fine clubs too.

it was probably my move to the TS2 driver that got me going down the Titleist path. It fits me and my game so well I was willing to see what other options I could find on the Titleist lineup and this is where I landed.

I feel like the TMBs give me just a little more forgiveness on miss hits than the straight mizuno blades did without sacrificing a ton of feel.

My only issue so far is they tend to hit the ball too straight - I haven’t figured out how to consistently work the ball with these things vs. mizunos but part of that is probably the shaft too - PXs in the TMBs vs. playing s300’s in my mizunos for years.

All in, they’re quality built, solid feeling clubs which for the price point (way less than PXG, slightly less or equivalent to Mizunos) I feel like they’re a good value.

Really interesting, it's impressive you've taken such a big jump from blades to the tmb and enjoyed it.

I tend to sway between my MP 68s and Titleist 718 cbs, the titleist cavities are as big as I've braved so far! I really like the JPX 919 Tours as well and use them in the long irons but even those have too much offset in the shorter irons for my eye!

Youre not the first person to comment on that but honestly when you look down on the TMBs they don’t look all that dissimilar to a true blade - and I’ve spent literally my entire golfing life playing blades. The top line isn’t super thick by any means and you don’t see the muscle back. The face is a slight bit larger but not silly big at all.

They way I see it is I’ll give these a ride for a bit and see if I can stick with them - if playing some “more forgiving” sticks - albeit marginally more forgiving - turns into me feeling like I can’t work the ball, have no feel, etc. then I may go back.

Interestingly, the Titleist blades don’t feel all that great to me. They look really good but I never could get them to feel as solid as my Mizunos. If I go back to the blades, I’ll probably be rocking another set of the Mizunos.

I love the Mizuno lob wedge. It’s super soft and is actually kind of light which I like - I feel like I can hit a very wide range of shots with it.

Ive tried other L wedges (Titleist, Cleveland, Ping and more) but I keep coming back to the Mizunos - they’re the best I’ve found thus far for my game.
