I’m a 50 year old child and love a proper hot hatch. Here’s my current FiST and my old track toy. That old track rat was gutted, stripped down, was on rails, and was a riot. Long live the hot hatch.

Reviving this one, as I may be in the market this year. Wife’s car is 14 years old now. No urgency for a new car, but we are thinking about it….in the event of a large repair this year we will make the call.  Here are the current contenders:

Volvo V60 (gas) with European Delivery. I think Volvo and Porsche are the only ones still offering this program and it is fairly compelling. Her current ride is also a Volvo wagon and we have loved (and still do) the car.

VW iDBuzz is what we both really want, but the pricing and availability are still very uncertain. I also will not pay a dealer markup if there is a bunch of initial excitement when these become available here.

Tesla 3 or Y….undeniably the best value, and the charging network access is a significant plus. I have a personal ethical dilemma with giving any of my money to Musk even if his vehicle is objectively superior, so I need to work this out in my mind.

Let’s get some car talk going on here again, this thread has been quiet too long!

Out the three, hands down the Volvo for me.

Not a believer in all electric as it stands right now. Toyota & Mercedes have developed batteries that have twice the range. There's hydrogen in pipeline too. Well engineered hybrids is as close i will go.

Toyota has a 4-cylinder coming that has 400lbs of torque. There's a hybrid to that too. They have a new Landcrusier landing in 2024, if I needed that size to carry & travel, I would buy that.

Twice the range?  I have been hearing that sort of thing for many years now and a more then a few folks have gone bankrupt trying to startup battery companies.  To my knowledge Tesla has the beast range of anything in production.

I owned a Honda hybrid before I went electric and it was really good car but the all electric is much better in my mind because of the simplicity.  No ICE maintenance is a big deal for me.  LOL just the way that I see it at this time...

Volvo. They are making what I think is the best looking new cars right now.

Toyota has a dry cell battery that they say works. Their current hybrid battery far exceeds their own goals on longevity. The engines from them are near bullet proof.  Would not trust Mercedes myself but I would own a yota hybrid in a minute.

Not so much street oriented.  2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for dirt play.  3.5” lift, 35” tires and a bunch of other mods.  🙂

These Jeeps are all over my area and I can assure you far less than 1% will every go off road. Awesome for what ur doing and it looks great SBT!  Hard pass for me on the highway/streets tho. But as always, to each their own 😊

Had it since September 2002 and just 14,500 miles with two round trips to Houston included in that.  Rides fine on and off road, great visibility, but sucks fuel.  Doesn't hurt too bad as I don't drive it a bunch daily.

Oh yeah, I’m sure it’s fine enough on the road. I was just thinking more about handling at speed and fuel efficiency 😊 If I’m gonna have poor fuel efficiency on the street, it’s gonna be at the cost of outstanding performance.

Both of our vehicles use a lot of fuel.

2010 Volvo XC70 T6. Properly quick wagon, the hi pressure turbo 6 in line is fantastic. Heavy, short gearing, and AWD, think this car averages about 15mpg in whatever driving my wife does (all city usage.)

2019 F150 4x4, hard loaded XLT. Sport, FX4, tow packages, 5.0 Coyote with a few improvements 😏. Love the truck. I don’t even want to know what the fuel consumption is exactly, it’s a lot.

The V60 Recharge is such a nice car, but not sure I want to spend $75k even if it comes with 2 RT flights to Sweden.  That ends up making the Tesla look like quite a value indeed.

After lusting for a Jeep for years I got the one I wanted from a curbside seller and never looked back. Hundreds of miles of forest service roads 5 miles away it's a no brainer.emnbenjeep.jpeg.92b486f666b1032760448efe563384e9.jpeg

Absolutely agree. I would never buy an electric car until they make a recyclable battery. Electric is the dirtiest thing you can do in automobiles.  From powering to waste. And I fear we’re 50 years from solving both. Now for pure power. Sure.  But I’d also never put a charging station connected to my home. I’d need a seperate meter/breaker combo on a pole so that if it overcharged/shorted or discharged rapidly , I would inly lose the car. But I’m also the guy who doesn’t want an attached garage with a car in it and won’t allow battery’s to be hooked up inside my shop unattended.  I’ve lost two cars to electrical fire in my life. You cannot imagine how fast and how hot they burn.  It’s seconds from ignition to 10 foot flames.  Thankfully both were outside at the time. One actually going down the road.

Yep. About the same wheel base as a Miata. Really happy at 50 mph on two lane black top. 4WD and some ground clearance gets me up to my private driving range once a year to hit a few balls. 😀

Where I live, they outright recommend that car be kept outside during any charge. This is New England, people value their garage especially in Winter.

So do you keep the chair in the back of the Jeep and then just pull it out and set it up wherever ya “land”? If so, that’s pretty bad A.

Right.  Wait until 60 minutes does a show on the 100 new landfills that has to be opened across the country just for the battery’s alone. Or the explosions from handling  those battery’s.  And then there’s the electrical grids that can’t handle it. The electric sources that are less than ideal.

buying a 1970s land yacht and rebuilding the engine every 10 years would be 1000x cleaner.  And would be 95% recyclable if you did kill it and scrap it.   Vs about 65-70% on an electric ( or even gas) vehicle now.

pretty terrific video of Chinese electric cars doing alot of pyrotechnics….lite of people have never heard of what lithium battery’s do on impacts in certain locations.  Even your dewalt electric tools will explode in the right circumstances.  So don’t throw them ! 🤣

It’s a great time to be a car guy. Lots of interesting stuff out there to drive!

Ford had to recall ton of those.

If for some reason a gun was to my head and I had to consider something that ran from coal, I'd look at the new Volvo's and would probably only consider their plug in hybrid version.
