Shaft Flex & GolfSmith Numbers

The other day at GolfSmith I got on their launch monitor and didn't think that the results were very accurate. Let me start off by saying I have a pretty consistent swing for the most part and I thought I was hitting the ball well that day. Here were some of my numbers:

 

6-Iron (weird numbers):

SS-96

Carry-172

Total-178

Score-75

 

6-Iron (weird numbers):

SS-78

Carry-182

Total-186

Score-75

 

3-Iron:

SS-94

Carry-208

Total-220

Score-76

 

 

Those numbers are very very wrong IMO. My SS was supposedly all over the place and the distances were alright. My 6-iron is my 160-190 club (usually 175). I'm a feel player so I don't have set distances. The 2 6-iron numbers are there were both full swings with the second one being a little harder but it shows my SS dropped A LOT.

 

My driver SS average was 109 but it went from 109-119. I was hitting a Titleist 905R 9.5* with an Adila NV 65-S shaft. I loved the feel of this driver and was crushing the ball. My problem with this combination was spin. It averaged around 3500 but I had A SOLID SHOT that jumped to 11000 which i'm guessing was an error. My launch angle average was around 13*. My question for this driver is should I get an X-Flex and go down to an 8.5*? As you can see in my sig I am planning on picking up this driver with a UST ProForce V2 75-S shaft but I don't think thats going to bring the spin down enough. I currently hit a Hibore 9.5* with a UST ProForce V2 65-S shaft and am having a few problems with it. If I hit a draw then this club will go with a decent trajectory about 280-290yds. out but if I try to hit it straight then it starts to balloon on me. It usually costs me about 15+ yards when it balloons. When I play there is usually a lot of wind so this is a problem for me.

 

My 3 wood SS was right around 105 and I was hitting it an average of 250yds. off the deck. I was using a Titleist 906F2 15* with an Aldila NV75-S shaft.

P.S: I have no way of getting on an outdoor launch monitor so this is the best that I could do.

Your spin is too high with the driver. Launch angle is good, so don't go down in loft. You may need an X flex to drop the spin. Did they have any other shaft combinations available? Hit a 9.5 with a V2 in it to see if the numbers look better.

The iron SS could be accurate. It is possible that you swung harder the first time, but miss hit it. Don't be concerned about the iron numbers.

That was the only 905R that they had. I looked around the store and in the used rack and there were not other options in loft or in shafts. When I hit the Cleveland HiBore I have now on the launch monitor my spin was around 3100 and my launch around 15*. With the Titleist I also had a few creep up in height. I won't have another chance to demo one before I get it but I know I want this driver. With the spin I was getting before what would it look like with an X-Flex V2 shaft and an 8.5* of loft?

Well, if you're doubting the accuracy of the launch monitor (or maybe the fitter) IMO you need to go to smaller local golf shop that has fitting services. Usually they put customer satisfaction on top of the list. Moreover, experienced club fitters are more likely to have their own shop rather than to work for big retailer like Golfsmith. .02 cents

The "movie screen" hitting area is not really a launch monitor at all, just a radar. I would not trust the results of that for anything really. It is not a true launch monitor.

Usually, they don't have the launch monitors out for people to just try, which is why I found your original post strange.

In Golf Screen Movie World, I carry a 6-iron 195 all day long. In Real Life, it's more like 160-165. There are way to many variables that the radar cannot pickup to be accurate. Not to mention the fact that they are trying to sell you clubs, so don't be surprised if you get higher than normal readings.

Well the distances weren't crazy at all because in real life I can push a 6-iron 185 without wind at my back. So my readings weren't really any higher than my usual ones. The SS readings were a little crazy though. All I need to know is how to get the spin from 3500 to 2500.

Yeah, that's my point--you cannot get numbers like spin rate from that piece of equipment. Not numbers you can trust, anyhow. It is not a "launch monitor"

Alright I see what you mean. I still am going to need help with picking out the correct driver loft/shaft though.

Right now I play a Cleveland HiBore 9.5* UST ProForce V2 65-S. This driver goes a long way if I put a draw on it but if I try to fade it or hit it straight it balloons on me.

This is what I need answered:[list]
[*]Will the 905R head spin more or less than the HiBore?
[*]Will a 9.5* in the HiBore launch higher or lower than the 905R?
[*]How will 10g of difference in the same shaft affect the overall ballflight and spin?

You must realize that the V2 is a med-high spin shaft. I believe that the 905R is a lower spin head than the HiBore, and lower launching. But are you playing the HiBore or HiBore XL? I know that the XL is a low spin head, but I'm not sure on the original. I don't really know a lot about 10 grams except that you'll probably swing a little faster, and the swingweight will probably drop a tad.
