Golfy things to do in Manhattan,NY ?

Off to NYC from the UK in Sept. I've been 4 times- and never done anything "golfy" as yet.

This time my 19 year old middle son is coming - and he's a keen golfer. Any huge / cool shops that are a must see ?

Any Par 3 / short courses we could hire clubs and play: that are half decent anywhere near Manhattan ?

 

We will definitely be going to Chelsea Piers driving range one morning !

Not a whole lot on the island proper. You've pretty much got to get into the outer boroughs, New Jersey, or Long Island to find anything remotely resembling a golf course.

 

Rent a car and take a drive out to Bethpage? There's also Liberty National on the NJ side of the Hudson, as well as Pellham Bay/Split Rock up in the Bronx. There are a couple of older municipal courses in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens as well.

Those outer borough/Long Island courses are going to need a full day set aside for travel & play. You may wanna just do the range at Chelsea Pier and, even if he isn't in the market for clubs, pay for a fitting at True Spec or rent out a simulator for a couple hours at 5iron or the like.

Thanks. I presumed as much. I don’t think we’re interested enough to devote a whole day to golf with only 6 days in Town and family in tow...

Chelsea Piers obviously. There is a New York Golf Center on 35th Street between 7th and Broadway. That's a pretty big store with some nice stuff in it. It's across the street from Macy's so perhaps you could offload the wife there and meet up? By the way, Chelsea Piers is expensive. It's worth it for a once only thing, but it runs I think 26 cents a ball. 90 balls will cost you over $20. There really isn't much golf stuff in Manhattan. You have to get out of town if you want to go and play somewhere. LIRR from Penn is doable if you want to go to Bethpage. There's a pitch and putt in Queens. It has 18 holes on it. I've played it once and wouldn't hurry back. Took about 4 hours to get round and the longest hole is about 80 yards. Just ridiculous, but it's filled with people who don't have a clue what they're doing.

There is a cool 9 holes course (Skyview) in Jersey City that you could play to eat up half a day. Not too bad of an uber ride.

The golf course at Van Cortlandt Park is accessible by subway and is the oldest public course in the country. Harry Vardon played there in his first tour to North America. If you go to play, go early in the morning and preferably on a weekday, otherwise the rounds tend to be slow.
