8 sets of newer (ish) irons. Too much, or really not enough?

I feel like maybe you need 8 sets. I mean you definitely need 2 sets of the same heads in multiple different irons to isolate shaft/head performance without dropping your gammers. I don’t know maybe I’m wrong, anyone else feel the need to ho irons?

Only one backup set of irons here. But I do have three backup shafts for the driver and am contemplating picking up another.

I think you should have 2 back up sets and each back up set should have 1 back up each and then you should have plenty of vintage sets.......But anything more would be silly.

I Ho until I find myself walking over golf Stuff. Then I hit the classifieds and sell down my inventory. If I go more than a season without touching them, unless they have sentimental value, I move them. Ho as much as you can stand/afford. Its your garage.

Yeah, sure. Multiple sets. Not just irons either. Sometimes I feel like blades, other times SGI. All depends on the feels. No big deal. Need to be prepared for when offending implements need a time-out.

Several years ago I performed an experiment on myself. I started with ~3 complete sets of clubs. For each round, I would pick what I considered the optimal bag setup based on the course and conditions. The next year I selected what I considered the best overall set and sold or gave away everything else, mostly to remove the temptation to experiment further.

What I found was that the average round for the first year was about 0.75 strokes better than the first month of the second (where I was limited to a single set), but that over the first year, my scoring average progressed by literally zero, whereas when I dedicated myself to a single set I progressed by almost three strokes per round over the year.

My conclusion was that it takes a considerable time for your body and swing mechanics to become attuned to a club or set of clubs, and in good part, it’s this synthesis that allows us to move forward and progress.

I have two sets of irons. Older Adams which are my day to day to irons and a backup set of newer Cobra which I rarely use. During the year I will buy or build a different 7 iron to try, but nothing has stayed longer than a few rounds.

2 sets of irons, 1 gamer and 1 backup. But you do need at least 12 different putters, science says so.

Ummmmm Not sure if serious here but 8 seems pretty silly unless you just like spending money for no reason. I guess if you're an elite amateur and if a club breaks, you can have a back up, but 8 is over kill. The only thing I have more than one of is putter... and I have kept my 4i incase I want to ditch the 4h. I may also consider buying a lower bounce lob wedge for the spring when the bunkers are more wet and firm.

3woods and driver may though... might a good idea it have a back up of each one.

OP's being a little silly, I mean he doesn't even try to justify having 8 sets BUT I started counting and well . . . . . .

Premise is BS though - my sets include a set of MacGregor Nicklaus 20ths and a set of Hogan Redlines, so phooey on the newer stuff!

Depends on who you ask - my best friend or my wife. I have a full set of AP2 718 blacks, full set of 716 MBs, full set of MP-18 MBs, and a half set of 620CBs - not including her set of 716 AP1s.

I have 4 sets, one for each season, it spreads out the wear and tear. Winter/Sim = most forgiving, cast (Ping i200); Spring = forgiving, forged CB (MP-54); Summer = best fit, blades combo (X-Forged/Apex MB); Fall/Travel = fun project, mixed combo (PTx/FW15/SCOR). Of course, I’d love to add a set of Z965 or FG Tour 100 to the arsenal, but truly don’t play enough golf to justify even 2 sets lol.

Now, drivers & putters? No logic there, I go with the hot hand.

Lots of good comments here. Sometimes hoing is a hobbie in itself. I like to tinker and build, I work from home and have a little pro shop next to my office. It satisfies the golf itch even when I can’t play as much as I want.
