I ditched the 3 iron quite awhile ago. I don't miss it at all, my 3H has much more verstility and I can hit farther!

I'm an 11 handicap.

I play:
Driver 10.5*
3 wood 15.5*
18* hybrid
21* hybrid
5-pw
50*, 54*, 58* wedges

I was using a 15* hybrid instead of a 3 wood for a while, then I bought a G10 3 wood, which restored my faith in fairway woods. I find the hybrids (G10's) a lot more forgiving. They're as workable as my irons (PING G5's) and the distance is a little longer and more consistant. I didn't hit my 4 iron much further than my 5 iron, which is why I replaced the 4 iron with a 21* hybrid. I replace my 5 wood with an 18* because it was a lot more consistant and it filled my yardage gap a little better. So I use the 21* hybrid to fill a yardage gap and the 18* hybrid because I'm more comfortable with a hybrid than a fairway wood.

I do still keep my 4 iron around and use that occasionally. I never got a 3 iron with my current set though. I tend to hit a fade, whether I want to or not, when I hit 3 irons. I've never cared for anything above a 4 iron.
As I picking out my new set for next year I have noticed a few things. A lot of pros have been switching over to hybrids. Phil for example only plays 4-PW with a 3-iron replacement. A lot of pros have even switched over to 5-PW with a hybrid replacement. My question to all of you is what do you play and why?

Is one more accurate for you?
Do you get better distance for one over the other?
Is one more playable for you?
Do you like the look of one over the other?
Is one more consistent over the other for you?

During a lesson with my club pro he was telling me that I was one of the only people he knew that still plays a 3-iron (for now). He then told me that he doesn't even play a 3 iron. He said that with as many hybrids out there they would be a better and a more consistent option. He hit my 3 iron about 7-8 times and hit almost all of them solid (1-2 were a slight fade that was unintended) but he said that to him the hybrids were more consistent especially in tournament play.

So, what do you play and why?
I am always amazed when people attempt to align their bag setup to what touring pros are doing. I play now and again with a number of them. Only 2 have hybrid 2i equivalents, and none have replacement irons. I share that because from what they've told me, they seldom play any tracks less then 7000yds, most are 7200-7400yds; putting a premium on distance and trajectory. They play par 4's in the 460-490yd; par 3's 170-240yds and par 5's to 640yds... What's in their bag vary's depending on the track and conditions. None of which are relative to what the average golfers play, even better am's in large am tournaments. So, building my bag because some club pro makes a statement would be an error in judgement, as far as I am concerned.

I would also disagree with most club pro's for a few other reasons; one being most don't have a tour games; but that's another topic. Also, touring pros like PH, being Callaway's flagship player, will be asked to play all sorts of prototypes; and quite often those prototypes never see the light of day on the retail rack.

Hybrids are solid clubs for the right players and circumstances; but, NOT the end all be all answer for all players. I tried 4-5 2i replacement hybrids and didn't like what I got...to much dispersion and don't like the look of hybrids. For all intents and purposes, I can do pretty much anything with my long irons. However, if I am in the hay and going for isn't likely, I will lay up and pressure my short game. Course, that's where I am different then a touring pro; he's making a living which pressures him to go for it even when the percentages are not in his favor... I will pitch out to the fairway and take my medicine ;)

My 2i is worth 200-215 poorly struck, 225-230yd well struck and on warm days where my joints are working - 240yds pure like butter. ;) I hit my 3i 195-210yds - 4i 185-200yds and so on.... and often choose to play tracks to 6400yds using only irons, and still post high 70's low 80's.

Based on all the tournaments and team play I've participated in, just don't have the same motivation touring pro's have. They need all the distance they can get and then some. We don't need that nearly as much; especially since the average golfer isn't playing the tips and doesn't have the game accuracy. Consistent ball striking is based on practice... if someone doesn't practice enough, they will need all the forgivness available, and for most that means hybrids and accepting the added dispersion.

8 handicap

iron set-up varies from 3-PW for most courses to 2-PW for tight courses, sometimes, I play 2, 3-PW for courses that have a few tight holes and I dont think i need the 3 iron for the 195-200 yard shot.... when the 2 iron is not in the bag, its replaced by a 17* or 19* hybrid depending on the course

the 2 iron from the tee gives me very tight dispersion (accuracy) that I never get from a hybrid.... when i have to play position golf (land on one side of the fairway for the best angle to the green, it is very handy....

the hybrid is generally used for long seconds shots into a par 5 green... or for long par 3s...

I play 3-PW, 50*,56* and carry a 5W for multi use. The reason is that I can still hit my R7 3I ok and there are times that it works well off the tee when a low trajectory is needed. I also hve not found the right hybrid for me yet.

That said I'm considering a set of MX 25 4-Pw and trying to find the right 21/22* hybrid
