Big boys don’t cry, lol. Hate it - April Fools Day 1977, senior in HS, only after a nice dinner on me does my girlfriend tell me we are through and now I get to drive her 12 miles out to her house. That song comes on the radio as we hit the road out of town, followed by ELO The Things We Do For Love THEN Barry Manilow. Before graduation I had a cassette deck and new speakers installed and forever after I’ve controlled the narrative in my vehicles!

BTW, a song I learned to love years later I would have played then if it existed —- H-A-T-R-E-D by Tonio K. Best breakup song ever, lol, for angry young and dumb dudes but not all that PC - still gets a chuckle out of me and appalls my wife. Best heard loud.

Sad tale that I'm sure most of us went through someting similar dealing with the fairer sex when a teen. Just a correction, ELO didn't do The Things we do for Love, that was 10cc also. Props to grabbing the reigns on the car tunes situation. Craig cassette deck with Jensen speakers perhaps? Checked out that Tonio K song. Raw and to the point, a good break up song for sure.

On February 24, 1965, the Beach Boys recorded “Help Me, Rhonda.” The song, written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, peaked at #1 on May 29, 1965, knocking the Beatles “Ticket to Ride” from the top spot before being displaced by the Supremes “Back In My Arms Again” two weeks later. It was the band’s second #1 single after “I Get Around” in 1964. The song became part of the “Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)” album in June 1965.

It tells the story of how a boy fell for a girl who dropped him for another guy and the boy begs his friend Rhonda to help him forget about her. Got it? Brian Wilson has always stated that Rhonda was not based on anyone in real life. Simple, right? Not so much. There is a long and twisted back story to the song, the recording session and the Wilson family dynamic that goes a long way towards explaining why Brian Wilson eventually became such a tortured soul. Oh, by the way, the song features Glen Campbell on guitar and Leon Russell on piano. And you thought “Help Me, Rhonda” was just a cute and catchy little tune, didn’t you?

LOL, I am so embarrassed at the huge ELO screwup! Can't believe I did that and now I'm doubting my memory because not often you would hear two in a row by the same group. All that angst, lol!

Pretty sure the deck was Alpine but the speakers were Jensens as I recall - spent a lot of time with my tape deck and headphones on making car tapes!

When Fort Wayne (IN) had their big flood of 1982, we got out of class if we helped sandbag, which I did. The city would come by to get your name and ask you to sign a waiver in case you got hurt, Which I signed.

The mayor then sent tix to the volunteer addresses for a free concert to see Cougar at the War Memorial Coliseum. Saw him at least 3 times between 81 and 83. Great showman.

Not from that time but i really like this song...

I graduated HS in 1981. Growing up in Northern New York along the Canadien border our best radio stations were from Canada. We listened to CHOM 97.7 from Montreal and when I went to college 2 hours west we listened to CHEZ 106 from Ottawa. These are my top 3 choices...

Brian Wilson was brilliant. Pet Sounds is my favorite BB album. It was an inspiration to Paul McCartney in some of his music.
