I watched it via the link in the other thread. It's a great watch. The high definition really showed how bumpy the greens were.

Although his driving was erratic, it was impressive to see a 50-something year-old Sam Snead keep up with a Young Jack Nicklaus on several tee shots. And also pulling off one-iron shots from the turf, I think.

ya, noticed Jack's black faced ceramic CF4000 clubs too. was he still using the 59-60 diamond backed Tommy Armour SS1's in '63? 

 

BTW, picked up a set 2-pw today of the CF4000 Tommy Armours. original ferrules, black ceramic faces, and leather grips. all in excellent condition. then took them out for a bit of excercise...

 

the head is slightly smaller than my Muirfields and the "Pro-Pel" shaft of the 7 iron is about 3/4" shorter. it's also about an 1 and 1/2" shorter than my 82 "THE Haig" 7 iron. all three shafts, i believe, are original. 

 

the range balls leave a nice mark against the black face on every shot! quite helpful.

My understanding is that Jack used his SS1's through to '67 when he switched to VIP's.

Love Flame Ceramics. Shafts certainly shorter than today but I just add a club.

 a few pics of my recent acquisition! i believe they're from 1959 or '60. 

 

just cosmetic, but MacGregor might have invested in a little bit of extra effort, IMO, with some smoothing of the sharp edges around the sole, topline and muscling. they are so easily marred by bag chatter being almost a knife-edge. 

 

as far as his choice of irons is concerned...i suspect that either Jack Grout, the Scioto Country Club pro where Jack learned to play golf, or his college coach at O.S.U., Bob Kepler, influenced his decision to play the CF's. 

 

ha, i have to admit that i was a little disappointed when i recounted the provenance of the clubs WRT Nicklaus to the seller (a 30 something male) and he appeared indifferent. but, i guess, i shouldn't have been.

 

as i'm sure being in his position at 35 and some old geezer went on and on about how the apparently worthless irons i was selling were the same ones that Bobby Jones played in his first professional tournament, i would have been indifferent too. 🙂

 

you may have noticed that on the few custom remakes of these diamond backed clubs, they always softened the edges as i suggested they should have on the originals. the appearance and longevity of it will be appreciated by those that purchased them (last pic).

don't know. i only just purchased to 50's version and don't have any of the remakes to make comparisons,  but i suspect there is no ceramic coating on the remakes

 

as soon as my shoulders and right wrist heal up from testing them out on the range the other day, i'm heading out again. ...i've discovered a possible swing thought that;s probably been eluding me my whole golfing life and i dying to try it out. 🙂

The Nicklaus 1 iron is actually mine! I recognise the picture.

These remakes do have the flame ceramic face albeit there are other remakes without it which rather defeats the purpose.

these SS1 and SS2 1959 and 1960 models (as i understand it, SS1 and SS2 meaning Silver Scot with extra stiff and stiff shafts, respectively) were listed as 551's and 991's. 

 

i suppose if the stampings weren't too legible one could make that mistake if not inspecting them closely.
