702CB 7 iron, 702+ 6 iron unwrapped.

Below: Ping i200 6 iron, 702+ 6 iron.  Very similar in size. 702+ has thinner sole and maybe a very slightly longer blade length.

Thanks for posting these. What are your thoughts on the offset of the CB+ for 5 and 6 irons? The specs really concern me. I have the 7irons (CB+, CB, and MB) and the CB+ looks solid at 2.5mm, but the 6 jumping to 3.5mm and 5 at 4.5mm gives me a lot of pause. Any reason you went CB+ over CB for the 5/6?

You are right but I probably should just get rid of it. I am rarely on a laptop and the sigs do not show up on my iphone. I forget about them because I don’t see them for anyone.

The irons are great. Played well with them yesterday, was nailing greens. Did not take them to the range, just went out. I forgot to take the wrapper off the PW and did that on the tee of a 132 yard par 3 and then stepped up and hit a beautiful shot right at the hole, about 12 feet short and about 4 inches from the ball mark. It was a sweet debut! I think the .370 tipped Project X Rifle shafts are a good match for me as they don’t seem quite as stiff as the taper tips. Nice combo with these heads.

I don’t why but I found the 702CB easier to hit than the 480TC. They seem stable and solid, perhaps it is the tungsten in the toe. The feel will be very familiar to anyone who has played a New Level iron — excellent.

I've wondered about the parallel version of PX.  I just don't know about shafts being descending in weight.

Remember it’s just one part, and not the heaviest one. The assembled set of clubs is still ascending weight.

The PX Rifle 5.5 shaft I had installed is 115g raw weight at its uncut length of 41 inches, which is roughly 2.8g per inch. So once your 5 iron shaft is cut — let’s say it ends up at 104-105g — as you move to the 6 iron shaft it loses another half-inch off the tip and that is an additional 1.4g of shaft weight lost. However, that is more than offset by the increase in head weight. A 6 iron head generally will weigh 7g more than a 5 iron head, so the assembled 6 iron still will weigh 5.6g more than the 5 iron.

Across a 6-club set you’re losing about 8.4g total in shaft weight but you gain about 42g total in head weight. The final result is a tighter range in total club weights from 5 iron to PW, but still ascending weight.

I honestly don’t notice anything other than the parallel 5.5 feels slightly softer than the taper tips, to me. For all I know it’s placebo effect but it seems that way. They’re still stiff, don’t get me wrong (Hireko says the parallel 5.5 CPM is 321, which is same as what they list for KBS Tour 120 and DG s300 tapers). Whether I could get it right in a blind test of both Project X 5.5’s, who knows? Some pros prefer parallel tips to precisely dial in flex and have each club be just a little heavier as they move to the short irons.

Yo Mike. The main reason I went for the 702CB+ in the 5 and 6 is the same as ever — fear!

I just thought a little more real estate in terms of blade length might be helpful, and like you I did note the offset is a little more but to me that means this head will be slightly easier to launch. That is mainly what I get from offset, I am not one who sees it and auto-hooks. I don’t like so much it looks like a goose neck, but on the 702+ it is in a similar range to Vapor Pro Combos, which I always liked.

That said, if you are sensitive to it, go all CB. My returns are early (one round) but I think I could just as easily go 702CB in the 5 and 6 and 702MB in the 9 and PW. Highly likely I will order the 9 and P in the MB just to have them as they look so good. Plus, I practice 150 yards and in shots and partial shots a lot, it’s nice to have short irons for practice.

I have not hit the 702+ 5 iron yet but I did have a pair of 185-yard 6 iron shots and put one in the middle of the green and the other just off the right apron. They did well and look good. Not sure there is going to be a noticeable difference between the CB and CB+ for better players.

Did you ever play the 902OS? I loved the longer blade length on them, but the sole dug too much for me. Looks like there is more camber and bounce on the 702+ but hoping to read and see pics comparing both models

I didn’t love the 902OS. It did seem to dig. The soles on the 702CB and 702CB+ suit me better.

Weather has turned cold here. Played a SIM round today (Bandon Dunes) and had a chance to hit some shots with the 702+ 5 and 6 irons. Two reactions: They are easy to launch and they are long. It could be the Rifle shafts helping as I always seem to hit those longer, but I don’t think it’s just that. These irons have some pop. I am glad I included them in this set. Hit some excellent shots and came away thinking for those that want a slightly larger profile, a full set of the 702+ model would be very appealing. I think these are a little smaller than the 902OS, in a good way. I was hitting off an indoor mat so I can’t add a lot regarding turf interaction yet but I can say they are precise. (I did hit two shots with the 6 iron in an outdoor round on Tuesday in super soggy conditions and I had no problems.)

Today I started slow with some bogeys and was 3 over through four holes but then settled down, caught fire with these irons and stuck several approaches right by the hole. (We just wanted to hit shots so we used auto-putt, which assesses 1, 2 or 3 putts depending on proximity to hole of the approach shot. You have to hit it close to get a birdie.) The place I went has 8 simulators and several players were admiring the 702CBs and one guy is likely putting in an order tonight. These are some fine irons. The lower CG and tungsten in the toe must be making a difference. The stability is noticeable. I like both heads. I think this lineup is New Level’s most blendable to date. They look very similar, look good together. And the sound at impact is so, so nice.

Early returns…

702CB is probably right between the King Tours and Blueprint S in size, with a sole thinner than the Cobra and wider than the Ping.

I am estimating the 702CB+ is a close match in size to the King Tours, but the New Level sole is a touch thinner, more like the Cobra CB. It is not super noticeable, but the King Tour sole width is a little wider than other irons in that class.

Playability wise I think the 702CB is easier to hit than the Blueprint S in terms of mishit forgiveness. Blueprints have toe weighting so they are stable. The NL also has toe weighting and just a little more room on the face. A little more confidence-inspiring from

address.

The 702CB+ long irons are definitely easier to hit than Blueprint S. I don’t think the Blueprint S long irons are that hard to hit — very nice irons — but a bit more forgiveness in the NL with the softened leading edge and a bit more sole width. The NL reminds me of the Srixon ZX7 with that feeling of a little more meat behind the sweet spot. You know how players always say the Srixons deliver excellent distance versus other CBs? I am

getting similar results with the 702CB. A good 7 iron for me is 165-170 yards with a “tech” design but I am getting that easily with the 702CB. They don’t balloon with these Project X shafts. Flight window is just what I want.

If you get steep that bevel on the leading edge is your friend. And it does not hinder spin — these New Levels stop really well (very wet here right now.)

In terms of feel they all feel nice. I just very much enjoy the feel of the 1020 forgings that New Levels uses. The feel is part of their identity. It has never changed since the company launched and that’s good.

If I am off on any of this I’ll revise these notes. Will try to confirm this as we go. Sometimes it’s hard to tell for sure til you see them all side by side. I’ll try for an in-hand comparison when I get to a PGASS or Second Swing.

Thanks so much!

This might be a better fit in the Club Tech forum, but I'm thinking about ordering both a 702 CB and a 702+ from their demo program to see where I might split a future combo set. I love the PX LZ 5.5s that are in my current irons, but they are not listed as an option with New Level.

My next thought would be to try the Modus 120 in Stiff, and although I can build a full set with that shaft, I can't find it listed in the Demo program. I already know what DG shaft version I would order if I went that route, but I've never played a KBS shaft, so I thought it might be fun to try. Would KBS Tour or Tour Lite be the closest match?

I did the KBS online fitting with the link, but of course it fit me into the $ Taper in R+ flext, and that's not available as a demo either.

My .02 cents worth as there is no standard for flex in golf clubs. You could reach out to New Level for their advice. In my experience they are very responsive. They may have a few options not listed. Maybe they can do a special order. Never know.

in terms of something comparable to the LZ 5.5, I would say KBS Tour regular at 110g would be my choice over KBS Tour stiff at 120g. To me the Project X LZ 5.5 feels closer to a Tour regular while Project X Rifle 5.5 feels closer to a Tour stiff. You would only be dropping down 5g, so probably would not be a big change, unless you are sensitive to shaft weight changes or want to err on the heavier side. You also could look at DG 120 s300 at 118g. By fit I would be in KBS Tour stiff, but I really enjoy the Tour reg. Have played it a lot. Plenty stiff for me and it performs well. No loss of accuracy.

I do have a KBS Tour Lite stiff in my New Level Gi22 5 iron (4 iron loft)  and it’s the first time I have played it. I am liking it quite a bit. It is 100g and it works for me as that is my longest iron and I wanted it a little lighter shaft but same D2 swing weight. It feels just like a Tour, only lighter. To me the Tour Lite stiff is not quite as stiff as the standard Tour regular, probably due to the standard reg being 10g heavier. I have Rifle 5.5 (115g) in the everything else and the 15g weight difference from the Tour Lite stiff is not bothering me. So similar setup to what you are pondering.

You’ll know whether you want to combo after you try them. I’ve hit the simulator a few more times. These irons are super. The more I hit them, the more I’m impressed with the 702CB+ in my long irons. They are easy to launch, blend seamlessly with the 702CB.

I asked them about this. They will, but it sounds kind of expensive. There’s a $50 special order fee, plus a minimum $40 per club upcharge depending on the shaft.

Hmm. That means you’re basically buying the different shaft. I believe KBS reg-plus go for about $35 per shaft.

Personally, I wouldn’t do it, since you can get the Tour reg or stiff as a stock shaft and pay nothing extra. Also, these are .370 hosels. I’d probably just hard-step the regs or soft-step the stiffs.

They can deliver you a build that plays very close to the reg-plus. Hard-steppng also slightly increases the trimmed shaft weight and soft-stepping slightly decreases it. Really up to your preferences. I asked them to soft-step my Rifle 5.5s in the longer irons only (5,6) to slightly boost launch and they did that no problem.

You are correct sir! Good eye.

I did freeze frame one detail we all want to see. The frame below shows an overlay of the 702CB+ versus the CB and MB (video says the latter two are exactly the same blade length). The Plus really is barely bigger than the other two, just a little more face area for mishits.

I saw that picture on their website, pretty good way of showing the difference between sizes, or how little difference there is.

At the end they made a comment about the “super combo”.  Guess I’m not the only one wanting to build a combo set with all 3 models.

702+ 4-5I

702CB 6-8I

702MB 9I-PW

Wondering if I could get some help from people in here thinking of getting 702+ 4-P currently play Apex Pro 19s and hit them ok just not sure if the 702+ are more or less forgiving then Apex pro 19s. I am looking for something more forgiving than the Pros any help appreciated.

That’s an interesting comparison. The Apex Pro 19 has tungsten weighting in the toe but not all the heads are traditional forging. Callaway used a thin cup face in the longer irons. The 702CB+ is a pure forged iron, like the entire 702 lineup. It also has toe side tungsten weighting and I believe it is a slightly larger club face. (That’s a guess until I know for sure!) I would say any differences in forgiveness would be down to whether the 702+ head is slightly bigger and whether that makes a difference for you. The 702+ feels very stable to me. For me, as a more forgiving long iron option, it’s impressive.

The New Level 1020 carbon steel feel is more pure IMO. Apex Pro looks good, felt firm-ish to me. (My neighbor has that iron, I probably can get a photo of it next to my 702CB+ 5 or 6 iron if you want.)

The Apex Pro 19 also has a fairly high VCOG (see Maltby MPF) which would tend to make it a little more demanding, depending on the player. I don’t know the exact VCOG of the 702+ but based on launch I am getting I would guess it is lower and the head probably has higher MOI. The Apex Pro 19 is more squat shape and its MOI is middle of the road for its category, really pretty close to the TCB and current Apex CB. The 702CB+ also has a softened leading edge, may help if you get steep.
