Dynamic gold 98 vs amt black regular launch and spin

Just picked up some launcher Hb irons (gap wedge through to 5i). As I don’t play much I wanted to have a set I can rely on when it’s been a while and i need to shake the rust off and still have fun.

tried them with the stock shafts yesterday and they were good. I would like a little lower launch though while keeping the forgiveness. I have a set of Amt black shafts that I never ended up fitting in an old set and am considering soft stepping them to give me the extra weight I like in the short irons. Will soft stepping them end up giving me a similar launch to the lighter shafts or will it still be lower as I’m adding 5-15g more shafts weight across the set. I like 115g wedge shafts and around 100g 7 iron which is why I thought soft stepping might get me closer to those weights and a bonus that I wouldn’t need to find an extra shaft for the gap wedge.

Oh, I chose the launcher hbs as they were the only sgi clubs I could find with a reasonably low offset and loft gapping that suits my needs

1) Soft stepping AMT's will drop the weight (by about 4-5 gm per step), not increase it.

2) Soft stepping is only about tweaking the feel, not the launch characteristics from the stiffness profile.

3) How feel (both stiffnes, static weight, and swing weight) changes from reshafting to a different model might effect the launch is completely subjective. Only way to know what will happen is to test it out. But the shaft - both weight and stiffness feel - should pretty much always be chosen based on what gives the best feel and what gives the best consistency and dispersion of the results. Trying to chase launch and spin and spin numbers with shaft changes is very unreliable - and may cause other problems even if it does help the launch/spin. If you want to tweak the launch, just go get the head lofts adjusted stronger or weaker, that's a way more dependable way to do it (and usually a lot less expensive as well).

I think you mix up Hard stepping with Soft stepping, and this is how AMT RED and BLACK looks like soft stepped, strait in and hard stepped, so if MORE weight is wanted, its hard stepping thats the way to go, they move close to 5 grams as Hard stepped once. (the row to the right marked HS1)

I think the OP is asking about replacing the Dynamic Gold 98 shafts (weight ~ 100g?) in the 5-GW of the Cleveland Launcher HB irons with AMT Black 4-PW shafts.

The Dynamic Gold 98 shafts seem to be a "made for" Cleveland shaft and I haven't found much information online, so we don't know if they are constant weight taper tips or descending weight parallel tip shafts.

Either way, the AMT Blacks will be heavier and stiffer in the shorter irons than the DG 98s, hence potentially lower ball flight in the shorter irons. In the longer irons, the weights should be similar. The actual ball flights in the longer irons might also be similar, but it depends on the step pattern etc. of the two shafts, in addition to how you load and release the shafts with your swing.

The soft stepped ant black weights look exactly like what I was after. 100g 7 iron and a little lighter gap wedge than my sand and lob wedge shafts (which are 115g). I think I’ll just try it. If I don’t like it I’ll just swap them back again

Make ONE club only then, and make it 0.5" longer than needed. (grip down or make a whole in the butt cap to get the grip down to correct position)

If you want to return to strait in, you dont need any new shafts....there will be a 0.5" leftover we cut away butt side after soft stepping once, but dont cut it off when testing so you have full return
