Hollow Irons Update

Hollow irons have been around for awhile now. What are your thoughts on them?

I have one, Cobra utility iron, feel is great and it does perform well. Not sure I want to spend that much on an entire set though.

Good for a long irons because they are straight. Don’t like them for mid and short iron shots because you cannot flight them lower or shape them at all.

Mizuno hmb have forged pitch and 9 irons. I have no problem working any club in the set.

Hollow irons will be around for awhile. remember in the 90s the TM burners??? but that was and maybe one other one besides the knock off copycats .. But now everyone is getting into it. Think the companies found the something that can be Manipulated for a few years.

Thanks you Bob Parsons for getting involved with golf so Golf club designers could have the funding behind them to rediscover the hollow iron concepts. And thanks to all the other companies to look at what PXG was doing.

I use the 2020 forged tec irons and love them. Distance and forgiveness is great while still having a great look.

Have both Ping G700s and PXG 0211s ... G700 definitely can get flyers ... PXG 0211 short irons do have tighter dispersion. Like everything else, crap swing = crap result, good swing = good result ... YMMV

Operator error - bad swings and thin hits - can contribute to flyers. It's not always the clubs.

------------------------------On a happy note: I play these and they work fine...

The iron heads are hollow, and because of tungsten weights the soles are not very wide. The lofts are 3i at 19*, 4i at 22*, 5i at 26*... up through 9i at 42* and PW at 46*. This means for most part uniform 4* loft gaps and half-inch shaft increments.

The 4i was a bit iffy off the fairway, so I refitted it with a hybrid shaft (see below). Picked up about eight yards off tee, and can now hit off fairway.

One thing I don't know: can hollow heads be bent to tweak lofts and lie angles?

I had each of my G700's weakened by 2 degrees. That's the max allowed by Ping. Standard lie for me.

I have the Titleist 716 T-MB set, and distance is consistent....... I haven’t had a “flyer” yet, and think it’s a myth honestly. If your striking the ball in the middle of the sweet spot consistently, then it’s a mute point. I guess if your all over the face, and middle one in a blue moon, it could appear to be a flyer, but I highly doubt it.

I’ve played forged blades from Hogan to Wilson staff to Mizuno my whole golfing life, and feel like my TMB’s are consistent as each of my past set of blades for distance control........ the big difference for me is the miss hits are less damaging. My misses are thin, and I’m not penalized nearly as much as my past blades. I found the Cobra King Forged tec to be the most forgiving on thin missed over the TMB’s and Mizuno HMB’s personally.

The long and mid-irons in the P790s (4i - 7i).... just incredible for this 42y/o wannabe.

They make me better than I am.

I have the Cobra Forged Tec iron. No flyers at all, and easy to hit. I can work them left and right, but flighting them down is tough. I also play Titleist T200 irons as well. I am having a hard time figuring out if one is better than the other...

Thanks for all the input guys. I’m still playing the 2011 TM MC’s and may change it up soon.
