Jumbomax Grips - First Impressions after a Month

games

Recommended Posts

I've had Jumbomax grips for almost a month now. I purchased a set of the original wraps in Medium off the bay. They seem to wear well, and they grip well in hot, humid weather. I've played them with a glove and barehand, and they have remained tacky with no visible sign of wear. What I've found in terms of performance:

They are heavy, but their weight acts as a reminder of the importance to let the hands and wrists set at the top, and let the hands fall as a unit with the butt aimed at the ball.I've been a picker all my life, but am now starting to take divots after impact, and starting to understand what proper compression feels like.I play a Ping G400 Max driver with a stock ALTA 55 stiff shaft. That shaft is already counter-balanced, but the grip really makes it pronounced. I'm definitely hitting it longer, and with more of a draw.Over the course of the month, I've found I'm swinging more "free" and with more confidence. So, in my experience, there is a "break-in" period...I have another driver that I'm going to regrip to see if the Jumbomax makes a difference. When I hit it with my conventional midsize grip, I couldn't get the shaft to flex (Maltby MPF Regular flex) and got nothing but blocks and fades.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the original Jumbomax wraps.

I've been playing these for almost a year now. Gaming the Ultralights in XL, by far the best golf equipment move I've ever made.

Good to know about the "break-in" period. My covid project was to buy a whole bunch of Demo 7-irons in my club set and try out all the different JumboMax grips.

I got SO, XS, SM and MD and put them all on 7-irons and took them to the range to compare to my normal 7-iron. Can definitely tell the weight difference as I get to the larger grips.

Conclusion that I cam to is I am somewhere between the XS and SM; with leaning more towards the XS, the SO felt too much closely to my regular grip and the MD just to big (and heavy).

Thinking now about getting the XS and SM in the Jumbo Lite and comparing it. Once i have it decided I will do a complete grip change thru the bag.

I wouldn't use anything else at this point. When others have offerings the size of JumboMax Small I'll consider them.

I have used a number of different Jumbomax grips over the years and have settled in to the ultra light extra small which seems to fit my hands well.  There is nothing else like it on the market.

I did the same exact thing!

Tried them all over the years and settled on the Ultralites XS.  I had a mixed matched set with different sizes lolalso had CP2 jumbos on the wedges but finally did the whole bag and love em.... only thing is takes away the nice sound of my forged irons, makes them sound loud as if made by wood, specially the wedges

Barf & Nels - what do you guys prefer about the Ultralites over the Tour - strictly weight difference?

Ya the weight.  I had heavy 80 gram grips for years and then switched to the ultralites and the heavy swing weight feels sooooo good!

Been using the Jumbomax Ultralight XL now for probably 2 years. Will NEVER go back to a standard or midsize gip again.

It is pretty easy to find that out.  It is freely available at jumbomax website.

For me my arms are less tense and hands/fingers are comfortable, enabling me to get after it easier without death gripping.

It is purely a comfort deal.  They are not going to magically fix a bad swing.

As much into the science of golf as he is, what is his scientific reason for using these grips?

The same as why he uses all the rest of his kit. He uses the scientific method to find what works best for him.

The single plane swing has nothing to do with the grips. Moe Norman was using his single plane swing for fifty years before jumbo grips came along. I use jumbo grips, and I have my hands as low and close to my body as Jim Furyk.

I have larger hands than average. I can palm a basketball. I tried the Jumbomax XL ultra lite grips in medium on 1 club and lost distance while testing. I used a gc quad to test my 6 iron with my standard iomic grips and my carry was 203 average. Tried the ultra lite and my average carry was 194. Every swing I felt like I was going to let go of the club on the downswing. Felt extremely uncomfortable and after 20-30 swings, I had to cut it off and move on. YMMV.

BrewMaster - thanks for the clips.  Good info.

BillF - I watched Moe Norman twice at clinics in Orlando in the mid-1990's.  He did have his own way of building up his grips - he used a bigger grip and then built it up even more with a leather wrap.

I never got to see his grips up close, but they looked much bigger than anyone else was using at the time.

Yea if I remember correctly that in the mid 90’s a golf company called Natural Golf was using Moe Norman as a spokesperson selling their clubs and his technique. The grips on their clubs were very oversized with no taper.

My Dad bought a complete set from them and took some lessons from someone in Illinois.

You can find other brands that have the same profile as the STR8 in XSmall. It's Small and larger where JumboMax pretty much stands alone, though I expect not for long.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just threw on an ultralite size medium on my driver and took it for a few swings with great results.

Something in my golfing soul is in turmoil.  It feels really good!  Way different than any jumbo grips I've tried in the past due to the light weight.  There's part of me that wants to try them through the bag, and part of me that can't stand the idea of not being able to cram them all in the sunday bag I like to carry, and moving away from old-school techniques and the beautifully illustrated Hogan grip on a standard size grip.

Will see how it goes on the course in the driver and go from there...

To ME that is the one and only disadvantage with these grips. I never walk and never plan to so I've always had a staff bag. But if you have a cart bag or smaller this will be an issue.
