Daiwa

I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning, but I can remember pro's bags from 16 1/2 years ago like they were in front of me now...

Still with Mizuno was the tousle-haired and slightly portly Surrey professional...

Taylor Made Burner driver & 3 wood - both steel shafted, Eye 2 1 iron, Mizzy TP-5s and a Mizuno sand wedge (I think a TP-9).

Can't remember the putter - but he used a Beryllium Pal 4 for ages as I remember and an old Anser... Where's my anorak?

Definitely still a Mizuno bag...

I've got that golf world somewhere too - I remember thinking how tough the Daiwa top cuffs must be.. :cheesy:

Those old WITB features were brilliant; in the days when they were actually right and they told you the shafts and grips too.
Those OnOff 247s are absolutely stunning. Doesn't Tadd use them?

Daiwa as Mat has said were big in the early 90s with Ian Baker Finch and one Richard Boxall playing them when he broke his leg at The Open.

Also sponsors of the top-rated Daiwa Barnsley Blacks fishing team here in sunny South Yorkshire.

Mat- great to see Ed Wood Wood-Wood out and about as the shadowy character "The Equaliser". Awesome trench coat but terrible barnet!! Hadn't realised he was in "The Regiment".
Tadd had them in the bag earlier this year. Assembled and tuned by Carl (Mr. Chikara) just like mine. If only I had game like the little guy. When he made his hole in one in the Nationwide tournament it was with the 247.

My First set of decent clubs (read not hand-me-downs) were from Daiwa, they had that tumbled look a la Ping. I got them for my 16th B-day in 1987 I also had the metalwoods which all were offset (first time I had ever seen an offset driver) They are less offset than the eye2's and a thinner topline with a smaller head. The grooves shredded the ball like a cheese grater!!. I thought I had lost them until my Grandfather asked me to help clean out his basement... There they were with an old Ping cushin 4 putter.

I re-gripped them and brought them out for old times sake and with one round they kicked my CG2's to the BST forum. I had so much more confidence with these clubs!!

I just got my grail set of Ping Eye 2+ so these babies are going to be my trusty back ups. I find that I prefer the irons with the old lofts the weaker lofts give me more options 170 yards and in. I do not need a PW with 43* of loft.

My first set of irons was some old 1975 RAM Senators that my father in law played all of 6 months. I used them for a bit then they were stolen bag and all. That was 2001

In late 2003, my first set of "purchased" club was a set of Team Daiwa Ballistic clubs stocked with a 1, 3, & 5 woods that I still have and play to this day, irons were 2-PW in Ballistic Graphite shafts and a Daiwa Blade 375-4 putter and all of it was sold in a Team Diawa Players bag.

The shafts I had to have yanked right away because they kept snapping at the hosel in the long irons. The heads looked similar to the OnOff GIII Iron heads.

The day I turned 33 in Oct 2004 I was held up at gunpoint at Cobbs Creek Golf Club in Philly by 3 slobs who stole my truck with all my golf gear in tow.

This is what they got away with besides my '98 explorer

Driver - TMade 580

Driver - TList 983K

Fways - Diawa 3w and 5w

Irons - Daiwa Ballistic 2 to PW

Cleveland 588 52*, 56*, & 60* wedges.

Daiwa 375-4 putter 34"

Addidas Shoes

Nike TW shoes

2 Boxes of ProV1X's and 1 box of ProV1's

I found a golf store that had the same Daiwa Bag I owned back then and bought it for $40.

Here is the bag and a pic of the set

Here's a couple pics of ads for the DG-273 from back in the day. At some point after the DG-273 came out, David Graham left Daiwa, but they continued to sell the clubs. So they have some models that say Designed by D. Graham, and then others that don't. The DG-273 was the first in a line of cast carbon steel blades that were designed just like forged blades. Daiwa even did testing with the normal cast DG-273 and a prototype forged set of DG-273, and found that no one was able to tell which was cast and which was forged. At one point that was part of their marketing capaign. But fairly soon after that they abandoned that line of clubs and went to the Team Daiwa line and back to forgings. Unfortunately, unlike when they had a split between the Advisor models and Hi-Trac models, when they went to the Team Daiwa line their game improvement models were just horrible. For whatever reason, they decided that is was a good idea to make irons that were essentially the same design as the Hi-Tracs but with a graphite face insert. Those just bombed, and Team Daiwa took a hit because of it. Their last great US club was the Team Daiwa 153MS-2 Forged Cavity(see below) in the late 1990s.....though calling it a cavity is a stretch, more like a milled line.

Soon after that they sold the US distribution rights to Carbite Golf, but they also, stupidly, allowed Carbite to slap the Daiwa name on it's own cheaper designs. Carbite didn't push the top of the line Daiwa stuff from Japan at all, but flooded the market with their lower priced, lower quality designs. And to top it off, they started using the Team Daiwa and Advisor names on those clubs, which just weren't the same quality as the old stuff. In the end, Carbite ended up going out of business, and taking Daiwa in the US with it.

In reference to the 10 iron, I actually still have the 11 iron which is a 53 degree gap wedge from my set of Daiwa blades. They were awesome sticks and I certainly wish I had never sold them. I used the money to go toward a set of Titleist 692's when they came out. They were good clubs, but not as good as the Daiwa's!

Only because I saw some cool looking 'Ballistic' irons at the Goodwill today and they looked sharp. A search only produced this thread.

well happy new year, now that I found this thread some old memories come to mind. back in the 1990s when I started playing, my dad handed me down my step mom's 5, 7, 9 and pw with a founders club fairway wood and a "merit" putter. He did this because he got a new set of Hi-Tracs for my step mom. I remember these were the best thing besides the Honmas' that my dad got for himself.

Funny fact. I still have the set of Honmas' in my garage and yes, they have the "10" wedge and the SW as well as the Daiwas did. I also recently visited my uncle in Sarasota who just started to play and oh!!! there they were....my step moms Daiwa set in his bag.

I bought this Daiwa wedge last week: DG-902 58 degrees. My first thought after sending the paypal was "another $30 wasted on an outdated clunker". I've been looking for a 58 wedge with a good sole for sand shots. Tried it out yesterday. Worked great from sand, and hit several good shots from the fairway. My KZG 58 will be on ebay soon.

I'm playing those Team Daiwa 153MS-02 Forged Cavity irons now. They are great clubs. Unique look.

Worthwhile thread revival just to see those Daiwas... and that forged 'cavity back' with possibly the most minimal cavity ever to claim the name - fabulous.

Need to see more of them - can you take some pics? I'm sure your set comes with a 3 iron at least, too.

By the way, if you're not aware - Daiwa still produce great looking clubs, but the Golf brand is now called "OnOff"... fairly available in Thailand and Asia, but a rarity no doubt in the US.

They have this set, where the OnOff square 'O' moves in the cavity to shift the COG - very nice..

Hi just wanted to show off my DG-201's that i'm thinking of regaming next season.

Unfortunately I can't find the 5 iron. 2 of the irons have had to be reshafted due

to the heads coming off.My family was given these a long time ago by Mike Reid.

They had a couple layers of lead tape i've since removed. He would come

to our house and home teach (a Mormon thing) and chit chat about golf with

my father. These are the best feeling irons i've hit.
