Yeah I remember one June many years ago two groups of us drove over to Olympic Club from Modesto in the Central Valley (about 90 miles) for Cal St Amateur Qualifying. We played in the morning with fog that never lifted throughout the day. In fact we couldn't see the group in front of us early on. After all of group hit their 2nd shots and got walking away we would have to yell: "CLEAR" so the group on the tee knew when to hit. In reality we should probably not played in that fog but in those days, they didn't call or delay anything.

When we finished it was 55* (first weekend in June). We were all bundled up including long underwear. On the way back home after driving about 30 minutes somewhere around Pleasanton we were just cooking and we had to pull off the highway and basically strip down as the temps there was 105*. We drove 30 minutes and the temperatures increased 50* from 55* to 105* !!

I remember the first time I went to Pebble. I landed in San Jose and it was 92*. I had shorts and a golf shirt on. Drove a little over an hour to Pebble and it was 62*. Got out of the car and it was freezing.

it is what we like to say "Welcome to Nor Cal leave your previously known yardages at home". Even here in Napa when we get guests here, we have warn people that they will not hit their clubs the distances that they are used to with the heavy windy air at sea level.

Years ago, we were at Pebble watching one of the rounds at the AT&T. We were perched on the 8th tee (great spot; you could watch 7 green and 8 tee shots) and a journeyman pro (I've long since forgotten who) hits his shot on 8, and watches it come up well short of where he expected. He turns to the caddie, and says "wow, that was short .... we must be close to sea level ....". The look on the caddie's face as he quietly pointed to Monterey Bay about 30 feet away was priceless! :-)

We're in the San Jose foothills, and we notice the yardage difference just from early morning tee times to later in the day. I can easily see a 2-3 club difference in holes from 7 am to 1 pm ....

My guys and I played first-out most weekends at HP for years. Watching a crowd-less major at HP is surreal for those of us that know every nook and cranny of the property.
But layers and beanies and fog and wet before 10AM - that’s very much comfortably familiar.
Just ask @golfware! He was our starter for many, many of those early AM rounds!

September and October are when we get our summer weather. There's always an amazing week or two in Jan and February as well. June, July and August are historically the worst, although the sun doesn't set until after 8:30, so you can play late and finish.

Grew up 10 miles south of Harding. Foggy 300+ days out of the year. Honestly I’d much rather play in overcast 60’s cool weather than 90+ sweltering heat any day.

Hahaha.... was there for 4 years... can't believe it's been 7 years since I worked there. Still play there from time to time to and the course just looked SO incredible. So proud of the former coworkers for putting on an amazing PGA Championship. Wow... love that course. I'll have to play there again soon. We should totally tee it up!! Like old times my friend!

Different Micro climates in the bay. If you don’t live here it will surprise you. That fog and wind can easily come in and drop the temperature on you. Same can be said for the monterey bay area and even half moon bay. We are blessed though with what we have in the bay area and neighboring cities. Only thing about Harding is the difference between what residents pay to what neighboring residents pay to what a visitor pays.

The saying goes "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.".

I think the micro climate in the Bay Area surprises a lot of people.

The story (at least what I heard) goes when San Francisco 49ers was going to build a new stadium, the original site was just south of S.F. (so the climate resembles that of S.F.). Because they couldn't secure the site, they move the site to Santa Clara, which is about 30 miles south and use the same stadium design. The problem is the design is an open stadium, and Santa Clara is a lot hotter than S.F. There were people who fainted at every game.
