Titleist Tipping Practices

Are they true to manufacturer specs for their woods? Or do they do some crazy thing by default like a standard .5 or 1" tipping like Taylormade?

Example So if mitsubishi specs say trim 1.5" for a hybrid - they do it?

Depends on the particular shaft model being ordered.   Some models they tip the driver 1/2",  for other's they don't.   The list seems to be continuously changing from year to year so you'd have to contact Titleist  (or post a question over in the Team Titleist forum) if you need the answer for a particular shaft model.   But the best I can tell is that they usually do not tip the models that are already stiff tipped and only tip some of the softer tip models.

TM's 1" is definitely crazy,   1/2" is barely noticeable and at least Titleist has a somewhat valid reason.  They were trying to make the shaft behavior in the adjustable (standard bore) drivers match the way they performed in the previous bore-through designs.

Titleist responded with: "Our R and D department tests all the shafts and we tip them according to the recommendations they provide to play true to flex"

Which for example, from them, is 1" for the Tensei Pro White in their 818 4 hybrid - as opposed to the 1.5" recommended by Mitsubishi in their specs.

"True to Flex" is a purely arbitrary concept.   But the answer is also not really surprising.  It the past they've frequently referenced doing their own testing as a means to determine tipping.

I'm guessing they didn't say anything to more clearly define what that term "true to flex" actually means to them?

Does anyone have a Graphite Design Tour AD-VF (or similar) in a fairway that was ordered direct from Titleist? I have a GT2 3w on the way with a VF 8x and I got a matching shaft for my 7w. GD recommends 1" for the 7w but I didn't know if Titleist added any additional tipping to account for the adapter.

Additionally, the fairway that's on the way has "standard 1" tipping" listed on the order but I don't know if that's total or extra for the adapter. GD suggests 1/2" for the 3w so that makes me think the 1" is total (1/2" standard + 1/2" for the adapter.)

I could wait until mine is delivered but I don't know when that will be and I'm itching to get this one built. Regardless, does anyone have one from Titleist that could measure end of the adapter to the first ring for me?

No OEM adds any additional tipping for the adapter.   Whether a head uses an adapter or not has nothing to do with the amount of tipping needed.   It's all about the BBGM.

Titlest used to add some additional tipping (1/2") to the driver due to the fact that they went from a bore through design to a standard bore design (909 to 910) which resulted in a significant change to the BBGM.    I also know they've been phasing out that practice gradually over the years since that's happened.  The list of which shafts get the additional tipping got smaller and smaller each year.  I don't know if by now there are any shafts left on the list.   And I never saw any evidence that they ever did that with the fairways - only drivers.    But it's always possible I could have missed something.

But as already mentioned, the best source for details on which shaft might still be tipped (if any) is over in the Team Titlest forum.  Go post there with the specific model head and shaft and you should get an answer.

I asked there and haven't gotten an answer...thats why I figured if someone already had that setup they could measure and let me know for sure.

That's too bad.  They used to be really good at those types of questions there.

If that's the case, you might have better luck starting a new thread with the specific shaft in the thread title.

The XC in my TSR3 driver is 24.75" from the end of the tip to the first ring, which tells me it was tipped like .25" to account for the adapter.

My TSR3 with Ventus Black was also ordered through Titleist as standard and it came 0.5" tipped as well.  I was a little confused on why that would be but just rolled with it and it's been perfectly fine for me over the past year and a half.  I'm not sure what a non-tipped Ventus Black feels like but the 0.5" tipping has worked well.

Unless they’ve changed their standards, 0.5” for drivers and 1” is for woods is stock regardless of the shaft model/manufacturer. At least that’s what I was told when I emailed them like a year ago.

Stuart, I know this is an old thread but when moving a shaft from tm to titliest  do u suggest a 1/2 tip ?

dont think brand, but hosel specs.

i cant say for sure, but the practice seems to be a heritage from the time drivers moved from bore trough, to blind bore.

if we had a classic shaft like the OG BLUE, and wanted to move/use the same model and flex, the general tip trim instruction was 1.25"

Today, we must think the same way when we move a shaft from one head model to another, and "equalize" hosel spec differences, so the shaft ABOVE the hosel, becomes as identical as we can get them

Example, if insert is the same, but BBGM is different with 0.5", the club with highest BBGM will get a shaft thats both 0.5" shorter, but its all from the but section....unless we tip trim

we need to know the shafts EI profile to know whats the right to do to equalize in each case, and thats probably the reason for why this can vary from OEM to OEM, for each both head and shaft model

Howard is right.    When Titleist transitioned from bore through to standard bore (adjustable) they wanted to make sure there current customers could order the new standard bore heads with the same shafts they were used to playing and get the same or similar feel from the shaft.  That's why they started tipping.

But if you're going from a standard bore TM to a standard bore Titleist - there is no need to make any adjustment to get the same feel.

Well, the BBGM might still vary depending on which specific Titleist and TM model you're comparing - but likely no more than 1/4" and that's usually not enough to worry about.

any chance you have a pic of the velocore to tip gap? Looking to buy one on ebay right now and the seller is saying it's not tipped but it looks like it is. Wondering if it was factory/titleist tipping

They tip VF 0.5” for driver, 1” for 3 wood, 1.5” for 5 wood etc

Which is 1/2" more than Tour AD recommends... I just discovered this with my gt280 playing a little too stiff.  It's a full 1" tip.  I moved the shaft to my 5 wood (which is what tour AD recommends for a 5 wood) and got another shaft for gt280.
