I love the discussion we all had talking about Sergio's Omega last week, so I wanted to start a topic where I can update it every week with what the winner of the tournament was wearing. I will update this each week where the winners is wearing a timepiece.

 

So let's start off the new discussion with Martin Laird's TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 chronograph! I have always been a fan of the Carrera line and think it is a really classic take on a luxury sports watch. It might not have the most amazing movement or be made from precious metals but the overall package is really good for around $2500 on the second-hand market.

Since Jason Kokrak decided to go with the bare wrist after his CJ Cup win, how about Phil's Rolex Yacht-Master 40 in rose gold? Phil sported what is probably the new reference Yacht-Master 40 with the Oysterflex rubber strap. Seems like Phil has been wearing this Yacht-Master more and I have been seeing less of the Cellini that he has worn for so long. Personally I have grown to really love the iconic, chunky Yacht-Master bezel and think the matte black Cerachrom ceramic goes really well with the Everose Gold case. The new Oysterfelx rubber bracelet is also a great addition to the Yacht-Master and I love the tech that goes into it. Titanium and nickel "blades" are encased in the rubber to give the strap durability and a built in cushioning system it comfortable to wear through 18 holes. Phil has been wearing a watch during play for most of his career and the golf swing is VERY hard on mechanical watches, but it seems like the self-winding 3235 is up to the task. What are your thoughts on the Yacht-Master?

So I looks like Patrick Cantlay may no longer be with Audemars Piguet as he doesn't have the logo on his sleeve and wasn't wearing one of their watches on Sunday after his win at the ZOZO. He was the profile in my first WOTW article back in June of 2019. No watch on the winner of the European Tour either this week, so I had to take a look at the LPGA! 

 

Ally McDonald wasn't wearing a watch after her win at the Drive On Championship, but she did receive what looked like a Rolex Datejust 36 in stainless steel and rose gold after her victory. Rolex's Datejust is one of the most iconic lines in the world. The case of Ally's Datejust 36 is made of 904L Oystersteel while the fluted bezel is made from 18ct Everose gold. Like Phil's Yacht-Master, Everose gold is Rolex's own rose gold alloy that is corrosion and fade resistant so it is durable enough for everyday wear. The white dial is accented by Everose gold, Roman Numeral hour markers that give the watch a classic look. Inside the Datejust 36 is Rolex's Caliber 3235, a self-winding automatic movement built totally in-house. Rolex's 3235 contains 31 jewels and offers an impressive 70hrs of power reserve. The bracelet is Rolex's Jubilee style with 5 piece links that have long been associated with Rolex dress watches. What are your thoughts on this piece?

It’s probably just me, but I’ve never seen a Rolex that doesn’t scream “savings and loan scandal”!!

 

Don’t get me wrong, they make some amazing pieces, but to me they’re always going to be the brand of 80s excess.

No, not just you. A number of people share that prejudice - even some within the watch "community". Rolex tend to be... polarizing. 

 

Since Rolex represents 80's excess, I wonder what current watch represents today's faux altruism?

How about Viktor Hovland's Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Openworked? I am typically not a fan of skeleton dials, but for some reason I just love this watch and it's gold brother. Something about the grey, pink gold, and silver movement just fits my eye. The retail on these is $55k but good luck finding one, the secondary market is charging double that price for one of these rare Royal Oaks!

It looks like even the mainspring barrel is skeletonized. I don't know if I have seen that before. At least I haven't noticed it.

It is like they have machined away any excess material on every part in there!

Writing my article found out that every piece of that skeleton movement is hand finished. Every angle on evey part, crazy to think about!

I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I just have a soft spot for Audemars Piguet pink gold. I think they nailed the color and the Royal Oaks and Offshores just look amazing in it. Lee Westwood was wearing an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore "Summer Edition 2017" after winning the Race To Dubai. Limited edition of only 500 pieces for the world, this Offshore comes with the white rubber strap that Lee is wearing as well as a navy blue strap to match the subdials. Retail was $50,900 when it was released, but it looks like they are trading for around $60,000 today.
