Titleist 983K?!

Fairway 14 is absolutely correct. For us vertically challenged folks, it's impossible to get one of those 460 heads around, even after sawing off a couple inches. Had a 983K i got rid of a year ago. Missed it so much I just bought another on eBay for $20. Can't wait to saw a couple inches off of it and get it on the tee. FYI, shaft length does not equate to distance, clubhead speed and a controlled swing do. I cut all of my irons down to 9 iron length and gained accuracy PLUS distance. At 65 yrs, 5'7", 160 lbs, I still hit a 5 iron 170+. Not gonna ever complain.

I'm 5'5" and I have no problems with hitting any 460cc head.  Then again my driver shaft length is 43".

Had one of these bad boys in high school with the aldila 65 green in it. Never carried it very far, but it was always a boring knuckleball that rolled out damn near as far as I hit it today. I need to go check my storage unit and see if it is still in there.

I took my E to a trackman last year still gets out there when you catch it. You gotta be on anything around the toe is ugly.

I contend that this is the driver I can hit the farthest (when everything goes right).  Not saying there isn't a better combo out there but it's the best thing I've ever picked up when hit well.  Problem is I am not good enough to play it consistently and I spend a lot of time in the left trees with this club.  Finally sold mine last year for like $20 after I concluded it would not see a tee box again.

The 983K was the first driver that I could really get airborn.  But my all time favorite sub 460cc driver was the 905T.

As others have said, big difference between then and now is off-center shots were far more penalized then.

I love the 905T also.  I even hit it better than the 905R which is even more revered.

Maybe people have said--but the cor limit was in 1998. So not much could be done after that.

-----It never appealed to me but I still have and play often the 975D and 975fs. Always thought the 975D was a cannon and very forgiving, especially toe hits.

I bought a brand new 983K on ebay about 8 years ago....still wrapped up in a unopened Titleist box....nothing longer when you hit it right on the screws, but it went right of right if I ever left the face open just the slight bit.....975D was 100x more reliable, and nothing felt better!!!

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaats nice lmfao, this isn't even close in Machu Pichu

Were at 2500 feet and normally that ballspeed here yields me around a 280 carry. The number is reading high i may squeak the odd 300yrd drive with roll. A well hit 983E is right there with todays ballspeed and spin. Would I game it under pressure hell no. Was fun to see what it can do. I had a fubuki tour 63x in it at 45inches.

Hi all,

I read this with great interest this morning. I have an 11.5 degree 983k and love it.

Please can anybody tell me what the associated 3 wood / fairway wood was that was released with it at the time? I'm looking to upgrade my budget 3-wood and would like the Titleist of the same vintage to go with my drive-crusher! 🙂

Thanks all

980f is your period correct 3 wood to the 983k.

IF you want a better performing 3 wood that is almost as vintage, the 906f that is 2 models newer is a much better stick in my opinion.

As I recall, the first iteration of the Pro V1x launched at around the same time. The 983K - Pro V1x was a pretty big leap forward for Titleist at the time. I remember tons of people at the course I worked at raving about the driver and ball.

After much deliberation (and analysing numbers from a trackman session with our pro) I switched over to playing left handed a couple of weeks ago.

longest club in the lefty bag was a 4 hybrid so bought one of these (for £19!!!) to complete a half set. Mainly because I always liked the way they look.

i presume it’s the extra weight and shorter shaft but I much prefer it to any 460cc I’ve ever hit.

Last time out I put one 50 yards past my longest ever drive on the 12th and another one about 50 past my previous best on the 18th. Granted both are “over the hill and down the other side” type shots but I’d only ever managed to just about sneak over that hill before.

clearly the club is responsible, not the minor swing change.

983k looks good, feels good, sounds good, hits it miles, and costs less than twenty quid. Can’t ask for much more really.

I think the takeaway here is:

1) Marketing/Advertising has advanced every bit as much as golf club technology.

2) Taking a musician and upgrading his equipment generally does nothing to improve his music.

3) If we spent as much time working on our swing as we do researching the next driver, we could add more than 3.2 yards.

I see a lot of nostalgia and happy memories associated with the golf clubs of the early 2000s, especially drivers. I never did have a 983K but I feel similar affection for my TaylorMade r540 with its Grafalloy blue shaft from back in the day. I don't think I'll ever hit a driver straighter than that one. I certainly hit the more modern drivers I've had farther than the r540, but it feels as though the 460cc limit takes a little bit of pride out of the feeling of hitting a tee shot right on the button.

Is it just general nostalgia or is it something more than that? Have any of you loved any of your 460cc drivers the way you loved your 983?

So today I've purchased a 906 f4 from ebay for £10 plus postage (a little bag rub on the shaft but generally looks in great condition) - figured it was worth a whirl at that price point. Hopefully it will be here before the weekend swing 🙂

Wow, what a club. Great to hit from the first cut of rough....long and straight with a beautiful looking flight from the tee.

I can see me using this off the tee throughout the winter until the fairways dry out enough for me to go back to my 983k
