Remove tilt at address...

Wondering if any of you guys have ideas for reducing tilt at address?  It would seem to be a relatively simple thing to fix, and I figure I’ve probably tried most everything to fix it, but it seems I have trouble with it. My trail leg is shorter than my lead leg, and I’m not convinced my trail arm isn’t also shorter than my lead arm.

I’ve tried setting up with ball position back, or with negative shaft lean. I’m reluctant to try to feel like I have “negative “ tilt but maybe that’s the way to go.

Anyway, I appreciate any good suggestions from you...thanks!

Interesting question.

It's not unusual to find limbs being unequal lengths by a very small amount, so if that's your concern I wouldn't worry about it, unless there is an abnormality,  as some tilt is built in by the way we hold the club and how we intend to proceed.    But if you're questioning for options to address an  actual limb issue, or just want to explore mid-hand address dynamics with tilt so minimal it's not worth mentioning, you can try cross handed to see how that feels, or level out shoulders a little.

Better to put up some motion pictures, and go see a good custom tailor in the meantime with your question, don't get too close though,  some carry straight pins inside their cheek pockets.

Lol. No, was just suggesting that I think part of my tilt problem might be related to limb lengths, because it shouldn’t be hard to just level my shoulders and set up that way (but apparently it is hard, at least for me).

I’ve had success with a few people with trail leg being much shorter.  Add more flex to lead knee only.

Interesting concept.  My trail leg, right, is a full inch shorter then my left.  I love hitting the ball fat, though I don't know if the leg length is the real problem.  Gets really bad when faced with a downhill lie.  I can hit way behind the ball. I find I have to exaggerate tilting the shoulders down the hill at address.

Downhill lies literally ruin my rounds at my current course. Holes 3, 15 and 16 have downhill lies and 15 and 16 are carries over hazards. I’ve started laying up to the flat part of the hole because I literally can’t clear those hazards unless I have an 8 iron or less in my hands, because the downhill lies are so brutal for me.

Thanks...can you elaborate?  I’ve definitely worked on different grips, putting my hands closer together, putting trail hand higher and / or more on top of the club, etc. Is that what you mean?

Leveling out shoulders with a sound grip is easy.  If however the trail hand is too far underneath, and this is just one example,  you'll have a face issue at address which may cause a inside roll as a compensation.  If you hold the club properly leveling shoulders causes no disruptions.

Monte is correct on the flex if it's called for in your circumstance, like an uneven lie might be.    Curious, what is the actual difference in your leg length measurement?  An inch or more?  Maybe an shoe insert on the low length?

Thanks for elaborating. Makes sense.

Don’t know re: leg length, but the only reason I know it is shorter is because I’ve had two torn ACLs in that leg and the therapists said that is quite typical when that leg is shorter than the other. They checked mine out and yep, shorter.

Just spit ballin here. Could you put a shoe ortho insert in your trail leg golf shoe only? Sort of like a shoe lift. I don't know how much it might bother you just walking around. You can buy gel ortho inserts relatively inexpensively as an experiment. Doesn't the trail hand lower than the lead hand on the grip result in a lower trail shoulder and thus tilt automatically? At impact, the lead shoulder is suppose to be a little higher than the trail shoudler, right? I am just a bogey golfer, just my opinion.

Good suggestion on the insert. That is something I’ll consider.

Yes some tilt is natural. Mine is apparently excessive...above what you’d normally expect considering the grip, club choice, etc. Even on putts I have too much tilt, and that causes me to miss the sweet spot more than I should. For putting, I start my setup right-hand low (lefty) and then get in what feels like negative tilt. I then switch my hands, and it makes my lead arm have to tuck into my body whereas my trail arm is fully extended. Maybe that’s how everyone does it, but I just wonder if that is “proper”. My putting has improved, though, once I’ve started this process. So I’m sticking with it.

For full swings, I do something similar but I just feel so “stacked”...but that is probably how I need to feel for at least a little while.

I've tried this the last few times out on the range and course.  My right leg, right handed, is a full inch shorter then the lead leg.  Seems to help as long as I don't flex the lead knee too much.  I do notice that if I flex the lead knee it can have an effect on the hip alignment.  It seems to move my hip alignment to the right of the target.  Or are my hips naturally too far left and this is actually making them straight to the target?  Do you see this happening on some of your students?

It will move it right.  That actually has a few benefits, especially if your right leg is shorter.
