Right now I've got the WRX'er ick towards my Srixon ZX5 short irons (8-PW), and it's so bad right now that I decided not to play or practice this week even though it's the most beautiful weather we've had so far this season.

 

I absolutely hate the turf interaction, the width of the soles, the high bounce, and the pronounced V-sole, and I can't kick them out of the bag fast enough.

 

I've had ick like this with other clubs before, and I've learned that when it's this bad, there's no point even trying to use those clubs because it will sabotage any chance of using them effectively.

 

I put in an order for clubs to replace them 2 weeks ago, and I'm just hoping they get here soon before I miss multiple weeks of the season. 

 

Just being honest and speaking from the heart... 🤣🙃

 

You should really ditch the Srixon's cause you've had the ZX7 before as well right? 

 

I'm curious to what you're trying now and definitely could see some potential suggestions for your setup cause there is a ton out there.

Yeah, I had Z 785's and ZX7's before. 

 

My ZX7's had the wrong specs due to bad advice from a fitter at the time though, so it's tough to say whether they didn't work out because of the incorrect specs, or something else (they suggested 1.5" long and 2-degrees Up, which was way off).

 

To be fair, my ZX5's are currently the wrong specs too (too long), so that doesn't help. My plan right now is to combo the new 8-PW that I have on the way with my ZX5 4 to 7-iron, and I may end up cutting down those ZX5's as well.

 

If that doesn't work, then I'll be shopping for new Irons in a few weeks, Lol.

You need someone to build your irons properly for you. See now me I'd just look at a new set cause it's more fun. I've been possibly eyeing that for my own set despite my setup being solid now, it's a sickness.

Oh it's a sickness alright, and you know I have it too.

 

I'm really trying to reform and turn over a new leaf. I feel like new short Irons are a necessity, but I'm trying to limit my frivolous luxury purchases for a while.

 

And yeah absolutely, it's so tough to get proper custom adjustments. It's tough from both Golf shops, and also from manufacturers directly...I've had both botched many times.

Order from a smaller shop if you can, will get more attention to details.

If you have lost confidence in the clubs you have you will never hit them well. Golf is hard enough. Time for new irons.

The Golf WRX ick is a direct result of GolfWRX ooh, that’s shiny and new and I must have it. Matt is right, find a small shop if possible and get your proper specs then order only stuff that’s in line with them because we all know that GolfWRX ooh has no known cure and you will want to try new stuff. As stated above golf is hard enough then add in equipment that doesn’t fit you? Almost impossible to play well. Imagine trying to play basketball with sneakers that were off a full size…not an apples to apples comparison but you get my point. I hope that the new stuff arrives soon!

Yeah, I'd be open to that for sure.

 

My first set of clubs, when I played Golf for 1 Summer back in 2007 ish, was actually custom-made by a Canadian Golf manufacturer called Goliath, and in hindsight they were fantastic. 

 

I didn't know at that time that they had the perfect specs for me, and they were really well made clubs.

Yeah, agree 100%. It's like getting cheated on by a girlfriend...once the trust is gone you'll never get it back.

I can truly say this is one of the times that it's not about shiny new things. This ick is purely based on performance.

 

The reality is that I only got to test my ZX5 irons on simulators all Winter, and obviously playing on grass is a totally different ball game.

 

It is what it is, everything's not for everybody. Time to move on and praying for limited delivery delays!!

Decided to go to the Driving range today on a beautiful sunny day, and gave the ZX5 short irons another try.

 

And of course they were FANTASTIC today off mats at the range, Lol!!

 

Regardless, I’m going to give the irons on route a shot and put them head-to-head, and will give the ZX5’s some more reps while I wait for the delivery date. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Yeah man, wow, what a difference.

 

I just played another round with my ZX5’s, and they definitely don’t perform on the course like they do off mats at the range.

 

When you hit them off the right lie, they’re awesome, but they just aren’t versatile with the different lies, and varying conditions that you see around a Golf course.

 

I don’t know if it’s the thickness of the sole, the V-Sole, the bounce, or just how they work with my swing, but something isn’t right between me and the ZX5 short irons. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

For you tournament level club churners: are you guys constantly selling sets as you replace them? Do you keep anything? Or do you have some giant warehouse full of pristine golf equipment that will be auctioned at Christie’s one day?

I have 5-6 sets in my basement and 12-15 golf bags, plus random wedges and putters.

 

Typically i give my older sets to the local junior programs. But with blades that is a little more challenging.

 

I am due for another cleanup, i spoke to the junior chair at my golf club recently and will give them 6-7 of my bags and all of my wedges. My only non-blade set i have giving to my friends son who is 12-13

I personally sell all the stuff I decide won’t be in my primary bag.

 

That’s backfired a few times when I’ve ended up re-buying the same clubs. But my wife and I both hate clutter in the house, so I don’t like keeping too much extra stuff.

Very cool. I gave my last set to the junior golfer that lives in my house, who I also claim on my taxes. Not quite the same level of benevolence. Good on you for doing this.

Completely relate to this. We are the same way. There are a couple of hoarder houses in my neighborhood and I throw up in my mouth a little when we drive past their garages.

Yeah man, I can’t stand unnecessary clutter.

 

Eventually I’ll build a 2nd bag for my son for when he gets a little older (he’s 14 now). But he’s not that into Golf, so the basic set that he has is fine for now.

Yep. Mine’s 18 so he got my old PXGs with the xtreme dark finish. Lucky.
