Considering the Ts2 to replace my 910s

Recommended Posts

So I have played a Titleist 910D2 with a UST Proforce 76g stiff shaft, and a 910f 13.5* with a project x 5.5. For many years.

I am comfortable with both, mostly the driver slight fade.

After 10 years of technology though I can't help but wonder if I'm missing out on some yardage/forgiveness? Or if it's all just marketing?

Looking to hear people chime in that have made the switch or have stayed with what worked? Any talk is appreciated 😊

As you can pick them up pretty cheaply now, I would say it's a no brainer.  I'm sure very few still game the 910 series (nothing wrong with that, they are good heads, I still have a D3 head kicking around somewhere).

I have gamed 910, 913, 917 and TS series drivers.  I liked the 910, as @gwelfgulfer said its a good head.  The 913 was ok, and I have a 917D2 + Aldila Tour Green combination that I still crush.

The TS is longer than any of the previous generations. I have both TS3 and TS4 heads.  The 3 is a cannon, the ball explodes off the face.

I think you will find the TS2 to be more forgiving than your 910 and you'll get higher ball speeds.  Might take you a bit to find the right shaft, but once you do you won't go back to the 910.

I made the switch from 910 to TS this year. I still like the 910s, but the TS is a different level of product. It is much more forgiving and I’ve found my results improved over anything besides absolutely perfect strikes (the once a round or two nutted balls, not just “good” shots).

From year to year I think changes in terms of pure performance (excluding aesthetics and sound, which are valid reasons to change equipment) are marginal. But stack 10 years of marginal performance improvements on top of each other and you end up with something dramatically better - a 0.5% increase per year over 10 years is 5.1% better overall. 0.5% you probably wouldn’t notice, but 5% you definitely will.

Definitely not just marketing, the TS2 driver will have both a lower and further back CG over your 910 which overall will produce better launch characteristics for more distance while also being more forgiving. Take the time to set it up correctly though, because the most common mistake when making the jump up several product cycles is not accounting for the often times longer and lighter stock setups which can throw you off and produce worse results. If you like your Proforce shaft then you can use that directly in the TS2, and I would also recommend weighing both heads in case they are different. If the TS2 is lighter then you may pick up speed but lose consistency, while if it is heavier then you may lose speed and have trouble squaring the club. The head sizes and shapes are also quite different so make sure you are comfortable with that as well, but if setup properly the TS2 should be a straight improvement across the board.

I've only recently upgraded from a 910 D3 driver to the Taylormade SIM.

During the fitting I tried the TS2 & 3 in various shafts and have to be honest, there was no difference in ball speeds.

The 910 was a good fit for me, hence why nothing really beats it by much.  Ball speeds haven't really improved much in years, despite what the marketing would have you think.

You'll get slightly more forgiving drivers now & the heads all have different launch characteristics, give them a go as you may find something that suits you far better!

In general, the newer stuff is better but it all depends on how good of a fit the original driver was and how you strike it.  Personally, I don't think there's a 10% advantage from a well fit 910.

Adam Scott played a 910 D3 at the Players a couple of years ago.  Hardly doubt he was giving up 30 yards off the tee with this club.  He might as well just hit a 3-wood.

Spieth averaged 289.7 off the tee in 2014 with a 910 D2 (almost won the Masters with it).  Averaged 301.6 in 2020 with a TS3.

I will even contend that if you don't know how the CG is changing from year to year, the newer version may actually be worse for you.  On average, this is unlikely to be true but it will be for some.

Yea you'd be giving up both forgiveness and ball speed. New shaft technology will help also. Nice thing for you is the 910 isn't worth anything so you don't have to sell to fund the new purchase. If you buy TSi blind you won't lose much on resale, obviously that changes the longer you wait or the longer you keep it.

Longtime Titleist guy. I just made the switch to Ping G410 but I have played a lot of Titleist drivers and the jump from TS2/3 from everything that came before was dramatic. Absolutely worth making the switch.

I got better results from the TS3, and I prefer that shape. But TS2 was very good. The new TSi2 appears, from all the testing I've seen, to be even more consistent and forgiving but with a little more pop than TS2. But the difference between TSi2 and TS2 is probably very small compared with TS2 v. 917 D2, or certainly your 910.

I just switched from the 910 D2 that I put back in the bag to the 917 D2. I know its not the full upgrade to the Ts but I noticed a lot more forgiveness on the off-center hits. When I hit it in the center, minor differences for me between the two heads.

Corrected, I did the math wrong by leaving out a zero. Appreciate the assist there.

But I’ll stand by my point that over 10 years the marginal improvements from generation to generation compound and become noticeable. Sure perfect strike to perfect strike a well fitted 910 can keep up with a well fitted TS, but those absolutely perfect strikes are rare even at the PGA level. Not to the 910 is bad, I still have one and love it, but the TS is absolutely better.
