Dinking around with some design ideas

Recommended Posts

Hey all - I saw another thread in here recently about machining some heads and that got my juices flowing again. It really started by seeing SungJae Im's Scotty from the Masters and really, REALLY wanting to get my hands on one.

I played around with Solidworks and such back in the early '00s before 3D printing was a thing (it was "rapid prototyping" back then and damn was it bad compared to what we have today). Downloaded a fresh copy fo Fusion 360 and whipped this bad boy up this afternoon. No idea if I'll actually make one for myself but thought I'd drop it here for some feedback assuming that's not against any forum rules.

And yes, I know, the hosel comes tomorrow.

Thoughts?? Feedback?? Give up??

I wish I could just open up Fusion360 and whip that up after not really using it for years.

But shape looks solid for sure, just curious if I'm sleepy or not but on the rear bumper on the right side is it ever so slightly bigger for COG placement? Or am I just seeing stuff?

Good eye! It is a little bigger, I wanted more of a toe heavy look rather than a perfect semicircle/D shape. Zero idea how it'll hang once I throw a hosel on there (likely going center shafted to start).

So I'm not that sleepy yet. The perfect symmetry can make it easier to offer both LH and RH especially if just tacking on a neck.

But remember for toe hang it's all about where the shaft inserts through the head. So can change placement depending on how much toe hang you want.

Great points! I honestly don't intend for this ever to be more than a run of 1 for yours truly, but I definitely get the symmetry point.

Also very much noted on the shaft placement, wouldn't have thought about that too much. I wonder if I can put an axis/anchor point down the centerline of the shaft and simulate the potential hang.

Hmmm......

Hosel, loft, sightline and a few little cleanups...kind of excited to see this thing maybe come to life!

Without knowing hosel choice you have in mind, or any of the raw dimensions, I just have a quick observation.  The flange looks very thick, to me.  With any reasonably sized putter of this basic shape, you're carrying a lot of weight with the shoulders, bumpers and even basic blade thickness.   If you leave that much meat at the floor of the flange, there is a better than even chance of the headweight being 400 grams plus.

I'm a fan of this headshape and love to see other guys taking their hand at subtle and not so subtle adjustments to it.

Holy cow you were right - it was at like 600 grams!! Brought in the depth of the flange, dropped down the shoulders/bumpers a bit and added a cavity to the back of the blade. Sitting right around 360g right now (at least that's what the program is telling me), seems acceptable?

Going to have these final models 3D printed right quick and see what we end up with! Thank you for the feedback there!

It seems that the center of gravity is not in line with the sight line, but it might be because the camera angle in your snap shot.

You might need a little more fillet on the leading edge, especially since the tri-sole is quite wide. Although you could always fix that after some testing.

It also seems that the bottom is quite flat front to back, and since it is quite deep the backside might touch the grass (or more) after the impact.

These might not be a problem for you, it all depends on your putting stroke.

But all in all, nice work!

Neat little design, just little things like square corners and small rads that are tricky when machining conventionally, of course if AM is the design route you have a lot more flexibility with those sort of things.

Fusion360 is an amazing tool for design considering it is free/low cost even if you buy a seat!!

Nice work.

Thank you, that's great feedback on the practicality of machining. Zero experience or knowledge on that, so if I do plan to get one of these machined I'm sure I'll have to tweak some of those components.

Do you have an idea of what a general tolerance or size is for some of those edge fillets? I rounded off most of the sharp edges at .0125" but, as you recently said on another thread, I imagine a lot of those can just be machined more square and knocked down after.

Lots to learn here!

On the machining side of things you need to think about what sort of tool would be used and the bigger the tool the quicker to machine in general.

Radii can be put in most places but quite often they would need generating rather than forming (with a tool the correct form) which can be time consuming.

A good machine shop will be able to tell you what you can/cannot have.

You can use 3dhubs to validate your design (thin walls, hard to remove volumes, 5 axis required etc). And get a price as well, all online.

They’ve also got some good information on how to do a design that is easier to manufacture.

Wow - that's a great resource, thank you! Pretty pricey for a one-off, bulk prices drop considerably though. Might need to harangue some of my buddies into an order!

The beauty of machining parts is that you can take it to 3 different places and they'd likely have 3 different ways of going about milling it!!

The trickiest area you have on your design is around the hosel, nigh on impossible to mill that for a reasonable cost.

Heres a couple of examples of how I've gone about modelling up that section - although a different neck, reasonable rads (~2mm - apologies tuning in from England...)
