Bandon caddies thread

Highly recommend Chris Martindale. Has been there over ten years. He was great in all aspects and fun to be around. Saved me a ton of strokes each round.

   I'm going to Bandon for a few days in July 2024. Is it too soon to reserve a caddie?

Can anyone recommend some caddies? Thanks

There are a number of caddie names on the first page of this thread, plus links to a couple other threads with even more names.

 

And it is never too soon to book a caddie.  Heads up that most are double-bagging, so make sure to specify when you make your reservation if that's ok.

I recommend Joe Schmoe, Laze Reading or Kent Lift.

Woody- Been there since 2001 and is without a doubt, best caddie I’ve experienced, anywhere.  He caddied for one of the guys in my group each round and he couldn’t have been happier.  Same for the rest of us having him in our group.

I had Olivia. She is awesome! High school senior at Bandon High. Been doing it four years. I’m a mid single digit handicap. She was very confident in her description of how a hole should be played. She was clubbing me mid way through the back nine of our first round. I prefer a lot of interaction and conversation.

Just got back on Sunday, and here are the caddies that we really enjoyed: my caddie was called Lunchbox. He is a retired army guy and we had a great time! He was just awesome, he even came to the par 3 course with us on his off time and carried beers around, and played a few holes with us. Can't recommend him enough if you want someone fun to join your group. Others that we had that were great: Santos, Chandler, Gabe, Christian. We had one bad experience with one of the caddies, and I don't know if its fair to single that guy out. But the ones above were all great. Most of our group have handicaps pretty between zero and 10, and they really do learn your game. I don't think I would play at Bandon without a caddie again, this was the way to go for me.

Very helpful list of recommended caddies here. What’s the protocol to request specific caddies? Do you provide names when you call and they try to pair you up?

 

Correct me if wrong, but it seems like it would be better to request known good caddies rather than get randomly paired up.

Call and request. Many of the better caddies are planned out for weeks/months. And if they're unavailable usually they've got a buddy they can recommend.

I had the pleasure of having Chris Solis on my bag the other week and cannot recommend him enough. Incredible course knowledge and resort history, plus an awesome hang. 
 

No doubt he shaved many strokes off my rounds, and helped me shoot my lowest round in years!

      In a few weeks I'll be at Bandon for the first time. I've been looking in on the live cameras and I see a lot 

of people without using a caddy. I've played a lot of courses without a caddy option. I don't need to hear about

the history of Bandon or for good conversations. So explain to me why I need one?

You don’t need one. For many playing at Bandon for the first time, caddies are great at guiding you around the course…things like aim points, blind shots, clubbing up/down for the wind, and helping to read undulating greens. They can also be a super helpful extra set of hands if it rains. Most US golfers don’t regularly face the challenges that Bandon presents and many find a caddie can be helpful navigating that.

 

All that said, you can certainly get around the course without one. They’d probably save you a handful of shots (and keep you fresher on your walk), but it’s by no means required if you’re more comfortable on your own.

As stated above, you don't.  Just get the course guides and you'll be fine.

Thanks. I figured for 3 straight 36-days, $750 or so might be easier via Venmo but I guess it’ll be caddy specific.

I have him for 5 rounds in May again.  Not sure I will go with anyone else as long as he chooses to work there as a caddie.

 

But the one thing I will suggest you do before requesting someone, is determine what kind of caddie-golfer you are.  Are you: someone that doesn't want a lot of interaction (i.e. just tell me the line); or do you want a lot of interaction (line, speed, even selecting a club based on discussion); or one in the middle.

 

I have mates that did not like a caddie telling them how to play the shots to the point they had to change them out for the next round; to some that wanted pretty much every shot and detail shared.

 

OH...Also - make sure you understand whether you are the kind of golfer/person that is going to listen to what is shared.  Because if you want a lot of info, then don't listen - what's the point.

Couldn’t agree more, Tyler is incredible. Been there for decades, young guy that knows the game and knows your game better than you do. Listen to him.
