Doesn't get any better than that. Your kids first 18 hole round...priceless.

We practice outside the house and she hits the soft balls pretty good now. The real course is different, but she caught a couple shots, struggled a little here and there and I just let her do her thing. The only thing I made sure she did was take a practice swing, do a little waggle to get ready and then hit it hard. Sometimes it works. But, she has kind of bought in and that she hits the ball better when she prepares a little. She may have the demeanor to be a player... She didn't give up. She didn't get frustrated. Far more advanced in that respect than me at that age.

My son was the same way, patient and figured it out.

I'm always content to break 80 and shooting right around par, but not under, is pretty much my max. So I have a pretty good round going at 4 over headed to a pretty pedestrian par 5 16th after just having birdied 15. I'd been hitting driver really well all day and a little longer than usual, so I pull out my 16* hybrid instead of driver because there's a dry creek that runs across the fairway that I can just reach if I hit a good drive. Of course I hook it off the tee into the tall grass/woods and can't find it. End up thinning my provisional INTO said creek and struck a big rock and kicked into more woods to end up with a Cinco de Bogey TEN. Birdie a tough uphill par 3 17th with about as good of a 5-iron as I've ever hit and then miss  an 8-footer for birdie on the par 4 last that's traditionally given me trouble in the 10 or 15 times I've played the course to end up with a 79 (par 71). Quite the interesting finish. Next time I'll just hit the driver and take my penalty drop if I happen to nut one off the tee. Lol

88 yesterday.  Walked 18 in 115 degree heat index.  Front nine I had 4 pars, 4 double bogeys, and 1 bogey.  Just made a few bad decisions on which club to hit and put myself in some awful positions around the green.  Birdied a par 3 on the back nine and missed too many par putts.  It was so hot I lost 6 pounds during the round.  I got to play with one of my college roommates though and had a great time.

I went out with my son this afternoon and shot 43 on the easier course.  I was 1 over through 4 and then went double, double on 5 and 6.  That kind of killed the round.  I'm fairly happy with how I'm hitting the ball right now though considering I just started playing 2 years ago at age 40.  Really going to try to take some lessons fall through spring this year and see what happens.

Shot 102 (+32) on Bethpage State Park - Red course last Saturday, 08/12. Shot double digit scores on #2 (10 over) and #18 (12 over).

I had the heeby-jeebies standing over my iron shots and some of my short game shots on the front nine that resulted in a +20.

Also shanked it more than a couple times on the front nine and the 18th.

I guess I was able to control my fear on the back nine to shoot 4 over until I played the 18th hole and shot a 12 due to 3 lost balls and one shank. I played without my UV balls that I needed since it was completely dark so it was understandable that I lost the balls.

It didn't help either that I totally mishit my drive - hitting the ground before the ball. Also proceeded to shank my third shot that caused me to lose my ball.

Nevertheless, I was still happy about what was probably my best iron play shot of the season - a nine iron from 107 yards to less than 2 feet from the hole for birdie on hole # 13. At the same time, I also experienced the worst performance on a single hole - a 10 on hole # 2. I had a 12 on hole # 18 but that doesn't count for me as I was playing at a major disadvantage - playing in the dark without my UV balls.

It was without a doubt, a really memorable experience for me from the lowest of the lows on hole # 2 to super high with a laser shot to less than 2 feet for Birdie on hole # 13.

This game will really drive you crazy!

Btw, I came across this great article by Zephyr Melton on Golf.com today that perfectly encapsulates the roller coaster ride of emotions that we go through as golfers - sometimes from stroke to stroke or hole to hole.

Takeaways:

1.) 4 over on the back nine until the 18th (scored 12 due to 3 lost balls - drive, approach and chip); Forgot to bring UV balls and flashlight arm.

2.) Played holes 13 to 18 at varying degrees of illumination/darkness from dusk, then fading light to total darkness but forgot to bring my UV balls and flashlight arm clamp. I was surprised to find myself doing pretty well at 2 over on a 5 hole stretch from hole # 13 to 17 until I came to the 18th hole.

3.) Iron play yips. Flinched; Need to develop a better pre-shot routine to help me focusand eliminate those yips.

4.) Short game yips. Flinched on 3 consecutive shots on hole # 2;

5.) Best approach shot of the season: Nine iron second shot on hole # 13 (Double fairway) from 107 yards. Ball settled less than two feet from hole.

Decided to aim for right side fairway for the first time (always played the left fairway) and drove it 257 yards in the fairway. Pulled pitching wedge first but changed my mind and switched to nine iron.

6.) Shanked multiple shots

7.) Best short game shot of the season: 55+ yards from the right rough. Used 52 degree wedge on a fairly decent hardpan lie to have the ball finish up less than 5 feet from hole. Ball stopped on a dime for the first time. One-putted for a satisfying scrambling Par!

8.) Long iron shots were solid and straight.

9.) 4 drives over 250 yards with the longest at 284 yards.

10.) FIR: 6/14 (43%), Above average.

11.) GIR: 7/18 (39%), Above average.

12.) Putts: 32, 1 stroke more than my best putting performance.

Got below 40 for nine holes for the first time since coming back to the game.....since golf is not played over nine holes I do have to include the rough 47 going out, ha ha.

47-39

Soft / damp so I played up at 5,850 yards.  No birdies.  Hit 2 fairways 👎 and 5 greens 👍 on the back nine.

Ping. Play Your Best.

So i am 1 under for my last 6 rounds, which is my best stretch ever i'm pretty confident in saying.

Over this time i went from a 0.5 to a +1.2

Played at a "links-style" course for the first time. It was ridiculously windy, and felt like I was a turkey cooking in an oven. Regardless, I shot 88, which felt more like 108 as I started the round Birdie, Double, Par, Double, Par, Triple.  Couldn't judge the wind, and was long most of the day but fortunately was putting really well.

Shot 70 this morning. Two birdies, no bogies. I hadn’t played in two weeks after almost 40 rounds over my Summer Break so I’ll take it.

I shot 82. Finished par/par/birdie which felt good. I had a little rough patch after the turn or it would have been safely in the high 70’s.

My last three rounds are 80, 75 and 82. GHIN is sitting at 10.9 but I might finally slip into single digits on the next revision.

Two gear adjustments have helped lately. I went back to the putter I got fitted for last year and that’s helped my confidence on the greens. I also swapped out my irons for a slightly more forgiving version of the same clubs and my approach game has tightened up.

46/44 for a 90. Had two tee shots OB (including ironically one that I was trying to be conservative with using a 5i) and 6 three putts. Need to get some time in on the practice green and get my lag putting sorted.

71 Saturday. Hit it close all day and just couldn't find the speed on the greens. 1st round with pxg m16 putter shaft so that could have been a factor.  Swing changes are nearly intact. Had an issue firing hips early and getting taller through impact. Cost me 3 shots on missed opportunities on par 5 holes.

Everything is there. Low rounds are coming.

On Sunday went 49-40 for an 89 from just a touch under 6700 yards. Was a new course to me and had some unlucky bounces on the course all day, luckily for me on the back 9 those bounces stayed in play although I lipped out 2 birdies on the back 9.

The driver was hot expect for maybe 5 holes when the body got lazy, I think counted 4-5 drives over 300, longest was 350-360 according to Google along with a 340 yard 3W off the tee. Man this weight loss plus strength/flexibility training is doing some wonders off the tee.

Went down in flames/epic collapse on the 18th hole with a 9 on a Par 5 (540 yds.) for a 95 (17 handicaper) at Eisenhower Park - White course.

Screenshot_20230822_234635_YardageBook.jpg.d339f28c4be739f159c3f9a87a4bc0e4.jpg

I was on cruise control for a little bit on the back nine, playing bogey golf on the last 5 holes until I got to the 18th.

Drive was hooked left with the ball settling halfway decent on a slight uphill grassy berm in front of the sand trap about 278 yards away.

I thought I got a really good break on my drive after the ball was able to roll out of the sand trap.

Made a bad choice of pulling my 3 Wood for a hero shot on my second strooke to get it close to hopefully make an 80 yard 3rd shot.

Didn't go as planned as I hit the worst shot of my round with my 3 Wood shot that flared way left over the tree line on the left towards the rough on hole # 1 of the Blue course.

Against the odds, I was able to find my ball so I thought the golf gods were smiling at me but obviously not learning from my last shot selection, I got a bit greedy again and made another consecutive wrong choice on my 3rd shot to play another hero shot 150 yards away - a fade using a 7-iron through a small window on the tree line to my right instead of a less difficult low 4-iron shot underneath the tree line.

The ball headed straight for the treeline and never came down, probably stuck somewhere up in the tree top for another lost ball.

My fourth shot 85 yards away was short finding the front bunker close to the front edge that was just enough to make a downswing.

Miraculously, I was able to get a half-decent shot out of the bunker with the ball finding the front edge of the green.

Two-putted for nine to close-out the round with a whimper....

The silver linning for me is that I get to go for shots that I would never attempt at any of my golf league tournaments and more importantly, to take this as a learning experience to get better.

Another silver linning for me is I was able to hit 8 out of 14 (57%) fairways which is one less than my personal best of 9 out of 13 (69%) that I accomplished close to 2 years ago (09/25/2021) during a league tournament that helped me win by 3 shots for my second win of the year.

The difference between the two is with the latter, I used my driver sparingly and opted to use my 5-iron instead as part of my game plan as water was in play for a majority of the holes. On the former, I never used anything else except my driver so in a way, I can consider it as a personal best.

Well,

Let's hear it???? 😉 :vava: :busted_cop:

Thank you very much, Gxgolfer. I really appreciate your efforts in starting this topic/thread.

For most golfers, it is a great way to flex whenever we complete a great or good round.

The flipside is on occassions where we make a mess whether it is a hiccup or an epic collapse like what I had recently.

I also just realized today that posting these memories to your thread also allows us to vent and serve as a quasi-therapeutic session to lessen the impact to our ego/psyche.

Took a bit of an epic hammering yesterday at Birdwood Golf (Davis Love III course), and carding an eye watering 110. The highest score I've had since returning to golf since a ~10yr layoff. It was pretty baking hot (94º w/ 45% humidity) and I think I made a major mistake by spending the entire morning at the practice facility prior to teeing off mid-afternoon. I wanted to enjoy the facilities, but what I think I did was wear myself out. I wasn't scraping/hitting during that time, but instead enjoying the short game and putting areas which were A+++. That said, no amount of hydration/fuelling is going to offset 8+ hours in the sun.

I decided to play off the 6030yd tees, which was definitely the right decision (par 71, rating 69.5, slope 130) but that said the penalty for missing fairways was exceedingly high - the rough was 6-8 inch fescue, and for someone who usually feels comfortable powering a 7 iron out of deep rough, sometimes I was struggling to advance the ball >15yds back towards the fairway.

The difference in playing municipal vs championship greens was absolutely massive, and ironically despite struggling with putting recently I felt like I was rolling the ball well. It was not uncommon to see 8-10ft of break on 30ft putts, with the ball literally rolling back towards you on some of the holes.

My driver has been absolutely metronomic since getting fitted/new driver and for the second half of the round yesterday it just wasn't happening at all. Out of nowhere I was missing right (my usual drive dispersion shades left) so had some real issues finding OB on 5 holes (!!!). I think that was primarily a fatigue issue so I plan to just goldfish brain that portion of my round, and continue as normal on Wednesday.

All of that said, I was pretty proud of my mental game as I could often have a complete blow up hole, and follow it with par or bogey and I really hit some excellent shots (pitching around the green was excellent, as was my lag putting - which given the green speed I was very proud of). My primary goal for the round was to have a plan for each hole, and I think I executed that well for the first 12 holes, then kind of turned into a hitting zombie.

Golf is most definitely a journey, not a destination, and I'm glad I had a chance to challenge myself on such a beautiful course. Returning to my more "normal" course difficulty this week, so I'll be interested to see how it translates. ONWARDS!
