Buddies Trip (Tampa Area)

So....since our Masters Trip has to be rescheduled for the third time in a year, a group of 4 of us are heading down from Indy to the Tampa area. One of our guys has a condo in Lakewood. We have heard awesome things about the Commander Course and there is a new one there as well...Piper I believe. Anyone played either or both of these?

 

We are also planning on playing one of the Streamsong courses since it’s not far of a drive. It’s basically a quick 4 day trip but looking to get as much golf in as possible. We are going to be down there mid May if that helps. I think we are leaning towards the Red course at Streamsong but the Black is also intriguing. Don’t really care about resort stuff as we are staying in his condo so just playing there. Honest opinions if anyone has them are appreciated!

If staying in Lakewood:

Public tracks that you can get on
-Lakewood National for sure (both courses are great so play both)

-University Park has 27 holes

-Esplanade

 

If you have a local pro that can get you on at the Ritz, Laurel Oaks, or Sara Bay I'd add that to your list as well

 

-Song Red and Black so different. I'd honestly go with Black, also play the 7 hole short course there (Free) and the 18hole Putting Course (Free) and be able to spend the day there. Can do those playing Red as well.

Streamsong Red is my favorite of the three, but blue is a close runner up. Black is a gimmick and I think they let Hanse have too much acid while he was making the greens

I’ll offer another vote for Red at Streamsong. But I’m also a Black course apologist—I think it’s a blast to play now that I know the course. I live nearby and played it a bunch last summer and grew to love it. But if you’re only playing one, go with Red.

I don't dislike it, and I do agree it grows on you. 

 

My preference is to play all 3 courses each trip, but if you were to choose one or even two, black ain't it.

Thanks for the tip.  I will be down there in a month and if I can't get out to Streamsong I was looking for some public tracks that wouldn't disappoint.   I'll check these out for a back up plan.

Don't know where 'Lakewood' is, but I just played Eaglebrooke in Lakeland last Monday (at the recommendation of others on this site) while in Orlando to visit family, and really enjoyed it.  Not pricey, and lots of water in play (but didn't see any gators).  Thought it was a very fun course.
