Anybody drinkin green tea?

I drink it some. I get the Lipton brand in the bottle---- My wife hates it --- Supposed to be good for you with antioxidents etc. My wife likes that Milo's Sweet Tea in the gallon jugs--- She says it is as good as she makes without the hassle-- I had to lay off the sweet tea due to kidney stones and I am also on a Dieuretic for high blood pressure so needless to say I drink lots of water---- But back in the day I probably drank a gallon of sweet tea a day

BTW The fine folks at Folgers love me. Starting at 0400 every morning 4 cups then water from then on unless I get a green tea at the course

See, now there’s a gentleman, a Good Samaritan, thank you, Big Stu.

And good idea, maybe I’ll just try a bottle to get a sense of the taste before I go making it in the morning.

Ya, we brew up a big pot of Coffee every morning. I love it but just curious about the green tea thing. Heard it’s a different type of alertness vibe as opposed to the coffee jolt.

That’s funny, I don’t drink anything after coffee besides water myself; )

I would never consider green tea as a substitute for coffee -- that's another story -- but there is something to it.

My first exposure to green tea was at an Oriental wedding ceremony for a family member.  It was one of those 12 course banquets.  The green tea really helped digest the food and allowed me to get through the day without being in agony.

Since that time I have been a green tea consumer, but in rotation with other herbal teas and always in the evening.  If anything I find green tea is a relaxant rather than a stimulant.  Nestea Green Tea iced tea used to be my beverage of choice at the golf course post round, but I switched last year to Smart Water.

I need to try cold brew coffee-- I guess the closest thing I have tried to that is at my course from time to time has those Dunkin Do Nuts cold coffee in the bottle. I like those but do not know if it is cold brewed or not.

I'm with @scomac2002 in that green tea is not a coffee substitute. That said, I don't drink it in the evenings because it has more caffeine than normal tea ("black tea"? I mean the stuff we love to drink in Britain).

Green tea's OK, and can be pretty good chilled. I had some this morning while I was practising. I prefer normal British tea, though, and so does my wife, who's Japanese.

Now, I like Matcha, but I hate it used with dairy products like matcha ice cream. There's a Yukio Mishima short story (I think it's titled 「愛国心」or "Patriotism") in which a soldier gets his young pregnant wife to squeeze some breast milk into a cup of green tea before he goes off to war.

Yuck.

Matcha is best on  its own.

As variants of green tea, I really like houjicha and genmaicha.

I made the switch from Coffee to Green Tea back in 2003. I don't miss coffee at all. In fact, it smells horrible to me. My favorite brand is Stash Tea Moroccan Mint. Another good brand to try is Tazo Zen or Tazo Green Ginger. Coffee was starting to give me shaky hands especially drinking a brand like Starbucks. That is why I quit Coffee and haven't looked back since. Hope this helps you out!

Ahhh, now, I appreciate all replies but this is what I’m looking for specifically

Ya, Starbucks like rocket fuel. We have been drinking more and more coffee in the morning. Up to about 20 ounces. Just last week, I cut down to 12 oz.

Appreciate the brand recommendations. Do you get a decent “bump” in the morning from green tea? I’m actually looking to lessen the overall hyperness but ideally would like a little “pick me up”

I have to have my two cups coffee in, well whenever, before noon anyhow. Yeah old retired dude. If you go straight from coffee to green tea, depending on how much coffee you drank before, might have problems. Like headaches as there is hardly any caffeine in GT. If that happens try black tea, a lot of great stuff out there. As for GT try gunpowder GT. It's leaves are furled up into little balls and they release as they brew. And really good tasting also. Tea can in general be a bit bitter.

I drink green tea regularly but purely because I like the taste. There's no way it could get me through the day. It just doesn't have a high enough caffeine content. After taking pre-workouts and drinking tons of energy drinks over the years, my tolerance level has become ridiculously high. I've cut it back to 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning but still drag through the day. If you really want to cut back the caffeine intake, it may be a good idea to go cold turkey for awhile and reset your system. That way, your body will become more sensitive to lower doses.

Let’s see what happens.

I just cut back from 20 oz of coffee to 12. So far seems ok. Maybe I’ll try weaning down to like 8 oz.

Then try the tea like on Monday morning maybe 😱

I definitely shooting for more relaxed vibe but just want that “straighten your head out” when you first get up. I pretty much quit alcohol completely and cranking fitness so my energy is very good.

Coffee just getting me too charged up, Notice on business calls I talkin too fast, lol. People think I NYer on coke! 🤣

I remember that happening to me when I went for my first colonoscopy.  They didn't want me to drink coffee after 8 pm the night before as part of the prep.

I didn't have the procedure done until 1 pm the next afternoon.  I was okay beforehand, but after the sedative wore off and I was allowed to go home I was loopy with the shakes.  Hadn't had any coffee in over 24 hours at that point.  Stopped for a coffee and a donut on the way home and felt fine by the time I had finished my cup.  I was glad I wasn't driving!

And that's the reason I drink decaf. 🙂 Never fancied developing that sort of addiction where my body is effected by withdrawal.

Probably not a bad plan.  I'm an ex-smoker.  It took me about 6 attempts to quit.  I wasn't successful until I took meds to help with withdrawal.  I haven't touched tobacco of any sort for 15 years now, in fact the smell of the stuff makes me sick!

My doc is okay with limited caffeine consumption.  I have two cups a day in the morning and that's it for me.  We have an espresso machine, but I never use it anymore.  We would have cappuccinos in the evening, but neither or us want to stay up all night! 😉  I brew a pot in the morning and that's it for the day.

@Soloman1: thanks for sharing... today I learnt about ‘oyatsu’ (thanks to you!)

If interested to recount more info w.r.t. ‘oyatsu’ culture/origins in Japan 🇯🇵  .. can refer to this website link below.

It's an acquired taste, but I did acquire the taste living in Japan. Most of the green tea sold in the US is contaminated with sugar and other flavor crap.

Consider it 1/2 the caffeine of coffee, but pure, unadulterated green tea contains an acid that when combined with the caffeine gives a more mellow and different feeling that the buzz from coffee.

Hot or cold, it really is good for you. Japanese sip it cold throughout the day and many time have it hot about 3pm (It's called oyatsu) with some kind of little sweet treat. Westerners take that to mean a piece cake the size of a toaster oven, but in Japan it means something the size of your thumb. 🙂

When in Japan I always saw people eating Mochi with their green tea.

I’ve gone through some periods of drinking green tea, mostly when losing weight. It does help with digestion and supposedly helps metabolism also. For any “benefits” of green tea you need to brew it from leaves yourself. Most mass produced bottled varieties like Lipton don’t contain enough green tea (it’s a blend that is light on actual green tea) to reap any benefits. The expensive ones like Pure Leaf probably do, but one bottle costs as much as a month’s supply of green tea bags - Twinings, Tazo, even the Lipton or store brand green tea bags will do. The taste of hot, strong green tea takes some getting used to for me, have to power through a few days to get used to it. I might go a few weeks on green tea while dropping a few pounds now that I read this thread.
