AWT and AMT shafts: Slight swingweight progressions?

The steel True Temper AMT and Ping AWT 2.0 steel shafts have been around awhile.

 

Basically, the longer iron shafts are lighter, and set shafts get heavier as they get shorter. Does this mean that the set will have a slight, progressive increase in swingweight as the shafts get shorter? I'm wondering if this creates a slight MOI effect.

 

I'm considering replacing irons for lighter shafts. After a rough January fitting, the Ping G425 is on my short list. I'm thinking about the graphite Alta Slate AWT shaft as an option.

 

With my current KBS Tour parallels in my irons, I had to put lead tape below the grip on 7i, 8i and 9i to get decent hand drop on full shots. They were feeling a bit feathery compared to middle irons.

 

Any thoughts or cautions to consider on AWT and MOI?

Big fan of DG AMT white s300.  The balance points are engineered on each shaft so the set can be swing weighted the same.  I like the heavier shafts in the wedges and short irons, but my age now requires a little help lightening the shafts in the mid and long irons.

Oh yeah. Loving me some AMT Tour White. My JPX 900 Hot Metals were all very close to the swingweight I wanted right off the bat. I didn't have to add much weight to any of them to get them to my specs. Definitely one of the easiest builds I've done in a while. And they play like a dream.

Hopefully when I get fit the shop will have a set of G425s on the rack, so I can hit 9i and 5i. I don't want to choose shaft and iron model just from hitting a 7i.

Were you're specs based on pretty equal swing weight, or more towards MOI (lighter to heavier).

Sorry, I should have clarified that. I built my set all to D2, so no progression until I got to the wedges.

Were you're specs based on pretty equal swing weight, or more towards MOI (lighter to heavier).

I believe the PW shaft is 130 grams and each shaft is 3 grams lighter as you go up the set to the long irons.

Yes, there was a progression in Alta iron shafts, although a bit confusing. The Ping main club site does not list Red and Slate versions as AWT, but an early Ping press promo and an outside review do call them AWT.

 

From Ping 2020 and 2021 Equipment booklets, and main online site:

  • G400: (black and golf) Alta CB Counterbalanced - "More mass in head allows increased energy transfer...employs a steeper weight progression to provide a balance of high trajectory, increased ball speed, and stable feel in long irons, yet controlled trajectory and a smooth feel in short irons."
  • G410: Alta CB Red - "Premium shaft allows for more mass in head to increase energy transfer. Provides a balance... (see above)...short irons."
  • G425: Alta CB Slate - "Premium graphite option deliver high luanch with stability and consistent feel."

But, in G410 iron promo (near bottom), the stock shafts are listed as...

  • PING AWT 2.0 (R, S, X)
  • Alta CB Red (counter-balanced) powered by AWT (SR, R, S)

In outside review site's preview on G425 irons, stock graphites are listed as:

  • Stock graphite shafts: PING ALTA CB Slate AWT (SR, R, S), ALTA Distanza Black 40

I phoned Ping customer service on this, and rep said Red and Slate are AWT, original not.

Correction... 24 March 2021

  I looked at a used set of G400 irons today with Alta CB shafts (original black w/gold trim).  The stenciling had tag line, "Powered by AWT." So, I guess all three Alta iron shafts are AWT.

Balance points are adjusted to give roughly the same swing weight despite the change in static weight.
