105+g Graphite iron shaft length?

If most lighter graphite irons are .5 inch longer than steel to make the desired swing weight in most cases, how about those 105+g (or even 95+g) graphite iron shafts? Would you build them same length as a steel set?

More expert contributors like StuartG will chime in, but I don't buy into the longer graphite shaft for SW purposes concept.  1/4" long or so I don't really care, but I don't want .5" long iron shafts under any circumstances.  Worse comes to worse, I'll use lead tape if SW is too light at standard length.  Good club builders have other means to get SW up without just using long shafts.  I've had many graphite shafted sets cut down.  YMMV.

I agree. I stay at length and just add headweight. It's worked for me for several years.

And don't be surprised if you don't need to add much weight or any weight for that matter.   The shaft designers aren't ignorant of swing weight when they design the balance point for the lighter weight shafts.

My HIGH bend Tensei AV White AM "S" graphite shafts (90g-108g) went into 620 series heads at standard Titleist length.  My guy added some tungsten power to bring SW up to D1/D2.

 

Graphite shaft manufacturing today, least with high-end shafts is different from years past.  Mitsubishi used Aluminum coating in the process of constructing Tensei AV White shafts.  The "S" flex is stiff and then some.

I have built Recoil 95 and 110  and had to add NO tip weight to keep the SW within 1 point.  Doubt most of us could feel that difference.

Thank you so much for the help! According to the textbook measure, I should be playing 1/4 inch shorter irons. However, after playing "standard" clubs for years, I am perfectly fine with standard length. As I would go graphite for my next irons (though I may just change the current iron shaft; it launches too high and spins too much after i gained much ss), I have been looking at heavier side 95-105 graphite (assume these would go lower than my lightweight steel shafts). As some brand lists their graphite irons are .5 inch longer, I was wondering about its necessity as I wouldn't be comfortable with longer length. Quick fitting at a box store says I should go 115-120g steel shaft but I could feel the trace of surgery even after one swing haha. Happy to know no length adjustment is required!

Actually, not as many brands do it now as much as they used to but regardless, it's generally based on:

1) tip weights for graphite are a little bit more of a pain than with steel and they don't want to deal with that in the factory.

2) they think the old fogies who buy the graphite shafts need/want help with more distance.

 

In any case, both are poor reasons to change the playing length.

I put a 92 gram shaft in my 4 iron and extended it a half an inch and I love it, I probably hit it at least 15 yards farther than my 5 iron but thats ok as I use it to tee off on tight holes.
