Equipment manager for a professional hockey team.....Hockey season leads to golf season which leads back to hockey season......And yes, by nature of what I do, I am CONSTANTLY tweaking/trying to mess with mine (and others) clubs/gear.

I’ve been a Residential & Commercial Building Supply Specialist for over 25 years in the NYC metro area. Mostly on Long Island. But I decided to go back to school for Civil Engineering.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. 🤣 I could write a book on our broken healthcare system here in the US. It was bad before but COVID has just made things like 1000x worse. Outrageous patient ratios, short staffing, unsafe work conditions, mandatory overtime, abuse from patients, and  unrealistic expectations from leadership just scratch the surface of problems nurse's face here. It doesn't sound like my collogues to the north are doing much better.

Nurses in Quebec filed a grievance over forced labour practices to the UN recently. I'm not sure how many times this has happened in a western-style country. I'm guessing not much. Canada's treatment of nurses was a major topic the last couple of years--Quebec is by far the worst.

 

During the executive act, the nurses union was essentially stripped of any authority, and nurses were forced to work hours on end, vacations and holidays cancelled etc. Many quit, so the people that stayed were forced to work even longer. By early 2022, our hospital capacity for covid care was 50% of what it was in 2020, which is why we were the only western country that still had curfews during Omicron. We just had no healthcare personel anymore.

Thanks for sharing the article. I remember hearing about them filing a complain with the UN. We've had similar problems here, but other that articles in the newspapers I don't think much has come of it.  I know we've had several nursing strikes in DC regarding working conditions especially staffing ratios. Most states in US either don't have nursing unions or they are forbid. Here in Indiana there was a big initiative a few years ago to get one started, but big hospital systems did everything possible to bust them up. (I'm not even a union guy generally but things have gotten outrageous).  Hospitals are making record profits and making us work shorter and shorter. My job description changes almost monthly it seems and I have more and more tasks to complete without any compensation to show for it. 

 

I'm 33 and seriously considering leaving health care all together. Call me a cynic, but I don't see things getting better anytime soon. I've got 15 years of my life invested into being a nurse between school and work, but giving it up tomorrow would make me a much happier man.

Yeah that sucks, i totally get it...profits and healthcare make for a pretty troubling mix sometimes.

 

Theoretically our system works, but not when we don't have people working in it LOL. From what i've been told by nurses here , they tend to be given less authority then US nurses, so many try to go to the US for better pay and a bit more ability to make decisions. Another challenge we've had though i'm a bit less of an expert on, is i believe we incentivize colleges to bring it a lot of foreign students since they can charge them more for tuition. So we end up training nurses and doctors that don't stay here.

 

I always say our healthcare makes for an excellent pamphlet. But we forgot to hire people to work in it

I can tell you as a nurse I have 0 authority to make decisions, so the nurse's in Canada must have less than none.

We tend to have a lot of the same problems around here with foreign students not staying around. I'd say 50%-60% the resident doctors i've worked with are from overseas, and of that percentage very few stay here and practice. I am all for people getting a good education, but there are so many holes in the healthcare system. I'd say all trades are hurting for people these days, and nursing is hurt even more by people leaving the profession in a mass exodus due to working conditions.
