Larger Grips

Wondering who should be playing a larger grip and what the benefits are. Is it all based on hand size or are there more factors to consider?

Grip size for me is sort of subjective.  I've used regular sized grips for years and then slowly migrated to mid-sized grips and then to oversized grips as my grip changed (from a conventional Vardon Grip to a baseball grip).  My scores dropped as well (but I don't think it is because of my grip change, it was a swing change).

 

I'm only 5'5" and don't have the hands of Shaquille O'Neal and I should be using regular sized grips but oversized grips just feels better in my hands for me.

I think that a generic formula has been passed down through the ages with respect to the correct grip size. Now that's not to say it hasn't been effective but I'm a great believer in experimentation.

I have small hands but use an oversize grip (Jmax SO at the mo'). Standard grips feel terrible to me as I like a grip to fill my hands as this feels like I have more control of the club face. I think the generic idea is a starting point but a larger grip can be a revelation even for those of us with smaller hands.

I don't have very big hands, wear cadet M/L glove, and I started with midsize in my wedges to quiet the hands a bit. Then it migrated into my woods with midsize with a few wraps, and I just put midsize all the way through the bag. 

 

I think once you start, if you feel like it makes for any positive change (even placebo) you won't want stop. When I started with the wedges I definitely noticed it felt better and I gained control of the face on chip shots, why wouldn't that translate to full shots?

I can't really answer OP's question, but I'll give where I'm at in my own determination.

 

I was fit 20 years ago and was fit for standard grips with an extra wrap. I never really recognized when I came into the game last fall and had to regrip those clubs that anything had changed, so I ended up with the same.

 

Now I'm looking at new clubs and thinking of moving up.

1. I wear XL gloves. Most suggest that this should be oversize grips.
2. The measurement of my wrist to end of my middle finger is only about 8 3/4", which is seen as closer to large for standard or on the lower end of midsize.
3. The general "concern" with grips too small is a tendency for active hands to turn over too aggressively--my common miss is more likely to be a pull or hook than a push or slice. So I think that suggests my grips are currently too small.

I think standard is definitely wrong for me. Gotta get to a golf store and get my hands on some grips and figure out what feels best before I get new clubs.

Grips are subjective and personal.  I know there are recommendations based on hand size, but I kind of throw that out.  I wear a XXL glove, but don't like the feel of oversize or jumbo grips, but I do prefer to add 6 layers of grip tape underneath a standard grip.. I know that makes zero since, but it is the feel I like and have been playing for over 25 years.

Grips are very subjective. You almost have to try them out to decide how well you like them. Fortunately I use an air compressor to install & remove grips rather quickly. Makes the process of finding the right grip a lot easier.

 

I've recently switched my driver grip to the JumboMax Ultralite grip. I wear a large glove so I started with the recommended medium but found that it didn't feel right. Just too big. Switched to the Extra Small & it felt more comfortable. I have put on the new Winn DriTac 2.0 oversize on my fairway & hybrids. Irons have Lamkin Z5 Genesis regular grips. Don't know if it's a bad idea to have multiple grip sizes throughout the bag but so far I see no negative effects.

Best bet is to put one grip on a single club and head to the range. Like others have said, it's all personal and I've gone from midsize to standard to standard plus wraps and just got my new midsize in the mail.

Yup - I agree with you. I got so obsessed with finding the right grips I ended up creating my own grip changing work table etc. The grip rabbit hole can be deep. Lol

When I was younger I never knew there was anything but standard. Accidentally wound up with a midsize once and the experience did not go well.

 

as others have said, try it once and see how it goes.

Some things in golf are 'old wives tales' that have been de-bunked with the advent of modern technology to determine what really happens in a golf swing.

 

Just experiment - I did. I have a hand size that puts me into standard size grips but I've never felt totally secure with my top hand with these and I can also over-draw my shots, so I put a selection of Bryson JumboMax M size/Feel Reverse taper/Winn mid-size grips on a selection of clubs from driver to wedges to test. End result is I love the JumboMax's on my higher lofted wedges for partial shots, especially chipping (calmer hands as @ItJustDiz says above) and for my other clubs have settled on standard size GP CP2 wraps with their larger bottom hand but also put 4 wraps of tape under the top hand that give me a more secure grip plus it firms up the grip feel, so these grips play between standard to mid-size.

 

Like many, I hook hybrids but I found that a Feel reverse taper grip calmed my right hand action and it is now playable for me so I now occasionally put a Titleist 3 hybrid in my bag.

 

Was a lot of fun to experiment and taught me heaps about grip installs and mechanics.

 

I still can't break 100 though...........joking, I am a mid single cap.
