Iron fitting-how to gap Srixon ZX combo set

Peterman6068

Recommended Posts

I’m going to club champion next week and I’m really interested in a srixon combo set.. thinking zx4 for 4-6, and zx5 7-p, then Cleveland cbx2 50, 54,58.

I’m a lefty and a digger, and my set I’ve been playing for the last couple years has been Ap2’s 4-G with vokey wedges. I’m thinking the V-sole will work better for me, and I wouldn’t mind some more forgiveness. I’m really steep and play premium balls, so spin shouldn’t be too low even with more forgiving irons. I really don’t try to work the ball that much so I’m not really sure I’m gaining that much benefit from players irons.

I figure I’ll be able to decide what shaft I want from the fitting, but if they just have me hitting a 6 iron, I’m not sure how to gap the combo set?

You're highlighting a challenge with fitting - it gives you a set of data but it is incomplete. I'll give you a specific for-instance. Coming back after a long injury layoff I decided to try some Srixon's. I've been fit twice a few years back, but as you note, the iron data is typically one club. I have taken a different approach - the fit data is useful and can get me in the ballpark. Instead of going and get fit again, I ordered a ZX5 7i in the spec that should be close. Then I take that to the (grass) range. I was curious so I ordered a ZX7 8i - the thought there is that it can be a test club for the different heads, and if it works out then I could split the set and I hadn't wasted two clubs.

fwiw I found I hit the ZX7 8i better than the ZX5 7i. I had already ordered ZX5 6, 8-PW as I liked the ZX5 7 well enough. Hitting the two 8i back to back (same shaft/grip/etc), I still preferred the ZX7. So I'm now waiting on the rest of the ZX7 shorter irons. I did however hit the ZX5 6i - liked that a lot. But when the ZX7 7i shows I'm willing to bet I'll prefer that to the ZX5.

tl;dr - doing the experiment is the only way to really know what works. The fit gets you part of the way there, and for some that may be a 100% solution, for others it will be require exploration.

I play the exact combo set you are looking at.   The zx5’s are rocket launchers.    I had to bend the 4-6 2* week to get them to combo well with the zx7’s.   When I got the set, before bending anything, the 6 iron was carrying 195-200 on smooth swings. The 7 iron was 175.  Now that I have the 6 iron bent week it consistently flies 188-190 with a smooth swing and comes in with a very vertical descent angle.

I’ve never been fitted for irons and I’m 6’4” so it’ll be nice to find out the best LLL and shaft for my swing. I just don’t want any big gaps between clubs.

I’ve read a few different posts on here lately from guys 6’3-6’4” like yourself with what seem like horrible fitting numbers after going to a fitting. Unless you have gorilla arms or gator arms...you most likely will not fit into a flat lie angle or 4 degrees upright. I play with a few guys your height, good players and most of their clubs are +1/2”-+1” and about 2 upright. I’m just sending this to give you a bit of a baseline going in. I realize all players are different with different setups and deliveries but I’ve read way too many lately on here that guys are frustrated with the fitting numbers after. Hope it goes great for you

Yeah, I thought about just doing a waist to floor measurement for length, and putting a line in the ball for a club face mark to get the lie angle, and just adding an inch to length. Plus I’ve done the mizuno shaft optimizer before for the shaft. If I did that, then I could just go ahead and order 🤷‍♂️

Pretty good guess .5" extended, 2* up. 6'3" here

Unfortunately it's impossible to find a grass fitter in Long Island, NY for Srixy 😞  I'd split no less than the 7. You'll need the spin coming into greens if you attack with 7i under.

Yeah there are always some exceptions to the norm but lie and length are not rocket science.

How do you like the MTBX with your irons?

I love the golf ball. It’s been great for me. Used prov1x for a long time but this ball fits me perfect. I love my ZForged...and they spin as well as any other irons I’ve used.

i had a good look at the  ZX5 and 7s

I would just play the 5s all the way down to wedge

marginally bigger didnt see much diffeence in the offset?

First, don’t sweat it - they bend very easily and you can tweak them after you get them.

Second, is there a reason you are committed to a ZX4 and ZX5 combo?  The ZX5 launch beautifully.  I’m about to put an iron with less than 25 degrees loft (i.e., ZX5 5i) back in the bag for the first time in years.  The ZX4 are stupid strong but compared to your AP2, the ZX5, and even ZX7, will be stronger lofted.

FWIW, I played AP2 for years.  Liked everything about them except they spun a little bit to much for their launch angle - especially on my most common miss.  The ZX7 is every bit as playable, maybe even more so, feels quite a bit better, and spins more appropriately.  Don’t be afraid to give them a shot - especially in the short irons.

I was looking at the sole of the zx5 online last night and I didn’t realize how much wider it is compared to the zx7. I’m starting to think I’ll go with 4-P with ZX5 and bend the lofts 1° weak, then bend the cbx2 50 to 1° strong.

My driver ss is 110 so I’m not really worried about distance, just looking to make the game a little easier.  I see the people I play with miss hit the ball and hardly get penalized for it, while I’m playing the same irons as pga pros that practice 6 hours a day.

Totally agree.  I just got the 5-6 iron in Zx5 and 7-w in Zx7.   The Zx5 is a hotter off the face (+5-8 yards) than the Zx7 at the same loft.  Also, the Zx5 is one degree stronger when comparing standard loft of same club.  I had a huge gap between the Zx7 7iron (145-150) and Zx5 6 iron (170-175) I bent both the 5 and 6 -1.5 deg weak.  This is much better than before but I think 2 degrees would be perfect.   Haven’t noticed any difference in the turf interaction with v sole.   The Zx7 is way more consistent on distance on pure strikes.   Zx5 slightly more forgiving on long irons.  If I were to purchase now, I’d just get Zx7 5-W.

I use ZX5 for the 5iron only. They definitely have a wider sole and feel clunkier. I much prefer the ZX7 in my 6i. From the top you can't even tell its a Zx5 but the turf interaction and feel are very noticeable.
