Using TP5x, need more spin for irons

Recommended Posts

Have been using the Tp5x for a few years now and really like the ball.  Just got new irons and noticed that they spin noticeably less than my old irons.  Don't try different balls to often so could use some suggestions.  Anything out there that will give me good distance with driver, but jump my iron spin up significantly?  Was looking at trying some of the bridgestones or maybe Tp5, but so hard to get real iron spin numbers on these balls.

If you want to stay with a firmer ball I’d recommend the Bridgestone BX.  The ProV1x will definitely spin more, but it will also launch higher.

Don't mind going softer.  ProV1x doesn't spin enough with the irons either.  Tired that ball yesterday.  Which of the tour bridgestone spins the most?

The ones with the S are the ones that spin more in my experience. If you want firmer, the Tour B XS would be the way to go. If you don't mind going softer, the Tour B RXS.

Bridgestone B XS and Titleist Pro V1x spin the most of any balls on the market today.

For more spin you would need to play the Spalding Tour Edition or Maxfli HT-100 balata but those balls haven’t been made in over 25 years.

Sounds good, appreciate the advice.  I'll give those Bstones a shot and see.  Thanks!

Bridgestone's have long been my favorite. Oddly enough, I have a fresh box of the TP5x pix (the ones with the alignment aid triangles) to try out. Dude on eBay took 2 weeks to ship my shoes and threw in a free dozen balls to make up for the delay. Expected to get like Q Star or Top Flight Gamers haha.

Normally I honestly think most "tour" balls are "similar enough".  I like low spin and higher compression balls so I tend to play the TP5X and the Left Dash Pro V1X.   I have dabbled in the Srixon ZStar XV and the Bridgestone BX.  I grew up playing the "original" ProV1X (when it was a low spin ball) and switched to the Pro V1 when they changed it up in 2017 (making the Pro V1 the lower spinning of the two).

All of these balls I could generally play with negligible differences, but I was shocked at how much I DIDN'T like the TP5 (non-X version).  To me it felt worse than a ChromeSoft.  I can honestly say I liked nothing about the standard TP5, and that's the first ball I've hit in a long time I felt that strongly about.  I don't think it spun much more than the TP5X, it felt mushy, wasn't durable, and seemed to lose a bit of distance.  I just flat out didn't get along with it.  I surprised me as I can usually play or get used to anything I buy or find to try out, but dang....I didn't like it.

Try the new TP5x out, bit more iron spin and short game spin. Z star XV also a solid option. BXS is probably one of the highest spin options out though

I play the TP5 because I get more spin with the irons, and they have less roll out on the greens.  Buy a sleeve and give it a try.  You can also buy some used but in mint condition on any of the online used golf ball sites.

I spin the ball more than most people, regardless of name.  Many years I played ProV1x but when its spin composition changed I switched to the lower spin ProV1 and AVX, and their new versions, both work fine.  In my experience, the harder I hit the ball the more I spin the ball.

Recently I picked up a box of new ProV1x and had one in play a few times.  I can't tell if it's my ball striking, my irons or driver, or the balls characteristics or lack of difference. 😛  Sounds fine off my 620 heads but different off my driver.  Dang, that doesn't help anyone... LOL.  Think I'll try the -ProV1x and see the what's what.

I would say Pro V1X, then Bridgestone Tour B X, then Srixon XV. All three of those would spin more than TP5X off the irons.

You guys bring up good points. The tp5x I’ve been using are the old version that I stocked up on a while back. Then the Prov1x I used yesterday were old ones I had from a few years back. Like I said I don’t follow ball changes too much so didn’t even know they changed the balls each year. I think I’ll try some of the higher spin options first and if it’s too much, then maybe try some of the newer versions of tp5x or v1x.

Have you tried the new TP5X??

It spins more than any of it's predecessors and seems more in-line with the Pro V1X now.

I got a free sleeve of the '21 TP5X from a Short Par 4 box a couple months ago, I agree that the comparison to a the current PV1X is accurate.  Definitely higher spin....too bad, I quite liked the previous generation TP5X.

I hit a bunch of 7 irons tonight. Ball speed was between 120-123.

ProV1X '21: about 6,500

CSX-LS : about 6,200

TP5X '21: About 6,100

When TXG hit the '21 TP5X against the '19 TP5X, the '21 spun about 300 RPM more off irons. I think they used a 6 iron.

I came from B330 (Tour BX predecessor) and wanted more spin. I have been more than pleasantly surprised by Chrome Soft X. Never cared for Callaway Balls before. I still use the prior gen (2019 I think). Its a really good feeling ball, not too soft but not B330-rock-like-firm. Feel is subjective though.

I tested CSX, Pro V1x and TP5 and CSX was the one that spun the most with irons and especially with 3/4 wedges. Around the green is was the best as well, but it was very close there

From what I heard, the new Chrome Soft Balls are even better in terms of quality control.
