AD DI 7S tipping- HELP PLEASE!

CaptainBogey

Recommended Posts

Hello - I bought an Orange Graphite Design AD DI 7S and I want to make sure I've tipped it correctly for my PING G410 5W and 7W.  I have the PING G410 fairway wood adapter on it and it measures exactly 24.25 inches to the first ring.  Can anyone tell me if this has been tipped and if so by how much?  I've search WRX and other sites but found conflicting information. From what I've seen online, the PING G410 adapter sleeve adds 0.5" but I could be wrong.  But if I'm right, that would mean from tip to first ring is 23.75 inches.  Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thank you in advance!

PS - From what I've seen from ProChoiceGolfShafts.com, a 5W/7W should both be tipped 1".  If anyone could confirm this is accurate I'd appreciate it.

This thread is apropos as I have recently acquired 6 AD-DI shafts for next to nothing via a few used club bins in Japan - 6S, 6X & 7X in woods and  85S, 95S, & 95X in hybrid.

I'm trying to sort out a discrepancy between the link posted above by @Seamus_McDuff and a separate thread linked within by @easyyy quoting an exchange with a reply from @Graphite Design Sales

The applicable passages are:

From first thread in a cut & paste compilation of previous posts:

"...An AD DI 6X is an inch shorter to the first green ring [i.e., 23.75"] than a 6S [24.75"], so a 6S tipped an inch (to give X flex equivalent) will have rings aligning to 6X out of the factory..."

From the second thread:

@jmcdonald states:  "...Just wanted to let everyone know that has a Black Tour AD DI shaft that the measurement from the tip of the shaft to the beginning of the first ring should be 25 3/4" for an un-tipped shaft. Got that info from Pro Choice(Graphite Design) yesterday. The Orange is a different measurement, 24 5/8" to the first green ring.

To which, @Graphite Design Sales replies  "...jmcdonald has it right.  The measurement for the other Tour AD Wood models of DJ, BB, GT, MT, MJ, M9003 and GP are also 24 5/8" from the tip to the first ring in the graphics closest to the tip on a brand new shaft. For the Tour DI Hybrids, it is 21 5/16", for the Tour HY hybrids it is 20 7/8". The Tour AD 9003's are 25 3/4..."

Discounting the 1/8" difference in base measurement between the two posts (24-5/8 vs 24-3/4), there is no mention that the X in any model, including the Tour AD-DI woods, has peculiar graphics that fall outside the norm for the series other than the single stray tron from the first thread.

I'm inclined to go with 'no difference' since none is mentioned by @Graphite Design Sales but am wondering if anyone else corroborating information.

Thanks.

Hey guys, gunna revive this thread. Have an AD Di 9X that’s 24 5/8” from end of ping tip to first green ring. Has that shaft been tipped at all? It’s the new graphics ad di orange

In some previous threads I read that the 6x and 7x have different measurements, Is that the case?

thanks

Called Bill at Pro Choices (Graphite Design) and he said measurement is 24 3/4" tip to first green ring is No tipping. Whether it be a 6x/7x/8x/9x the measurement is the same.

Hopefully this helps anyone in the future

Correct but you need to take the adapter tip into account as that is for the raw shaft.

Sorry to revive an old thread with a quasi unrelated question, just didn't want to start a whole new thread for this.

Can someone put to bed whether or not tipping the AD DI makes it play softer or stiffer? I have read some posts that say that the addi tip specifically gets less stiff as you move down, so tipping can make the shaft less stiff. Ive also read the opposite. Is there a consensus correct answer in regards to this?

Tipping will make it stiffer every single time.

Thanks. Just so I can be educated, I believe I'm misconstruing how EI profiles work, but just because it shows the tip being stiffer, regardless, the shaft will get stiffer if (in an equal shaft length situation) the tip is shortened?

The tip is still softer than the butt.

Gotcha, but it would still make the tip play a bit softer correct? So the spin rate may move upwards?

The link above says other but in the real world every time i have tipped DI's they've got a little stiffer with ball flight being a bit more penetrating and stable for me personally. I've only done half a dozen or so tho and 3 or 4 BB's.

Here's another short read for you. You might just have to give it a whirl but i am firmly in the camp that when you tip a graphite shaft it gets stiffer and penetrates a bit more. That's been my experience on course.

For what it’s worth, both these answers are correct - if you tip a shaft (leaving more of the butt section than if it was untipped), the overall stiffness of the cut shaft (what Russ refers to as EI area) will increase because the butt is always stiffer than the tip.

AT THE SAME TIME, in shafts like the DI where stiffness of the tip actually increases slightly towards the tip, you are cutting off a “relatively stiffer” part of the tip section. You are also moving the “hinge” (not a good descriptor for what actually happens when a shaft bends, but may be a useful descriptor for how players FEEL the shaft load and unload) closer to the tip.

Final results depend on whether the overall stiffer shaft outweighs the changes to tip geometry and feel for that specific player. Anecdotally, given other posts on this, most players seem to find tipping the DI “tightens it up.” Ymmv

I was on another thread about tipping a 6S shaft 0.5"inch to lower the ball flight/reduce spin and was told the bend profile of the DI is unique in that tipping actually should increase launch angle. Like some of you have said, anecdotally that seems to be the opposite where many people are seeing tipping bring flight and spin down instead.

Just hoping any people out there with a 6S can confirm that tipping 0.5" has brought flight/spin down? I left my shaft 0.5" longer than normal playing length and have been gripping down that amount to see how it plays without tipping and would like to bring that flight/spin down. Alternatively, would adjusting my driver setting to lower loft be another method (assuming I grip the club with the face square at address)?

There's no definite answer here.  I personally find that shafts need to be tipped 1+ inches in order to see spin drop.  There's a member here who posted that he saw spin drop 400 rpm after tipping his DI, 1.5 inches but that was over 10 years ago.
