Is the mainstream news taking UFOs seriously?

For me, UFO's and belief in a higher power (God)  kind of fall into the same category.

Flashing lights in the sky and seeing the face of Jesus on a tortilla can certainly be unusual, but nether one makes me jump to any conclusions.

While the math can be compelling in both directions, I've got to be agnostic on the subject.

I haven't seen Jesus tracked on FLIR and radar.

There's the story of (then) President Nixon showing Jackie Gleason, the showbiz legend, an alien corpse preserved on an Air Force Base in Florida.  Whether an Urban Legend or fact, I don't know.  I believe in the phenomenon, though I've never actually seen an UFO.

My favorite UFO/Alien movie is Mars Attacks, a satire with a sort of Mid-Century Modern feel.

True. But we can conceivably say the same about almost anything! People are people and we are inherently curious.

My point is certainly obscured here - because it has religious connotations, which like politics, I try to avoid in conversations on WRX.

It's not that I'm not curious and not that it wouldn't be mind blowing if we could actually prove that aliens have been and continue to visit our planet.

It's more an assertion that if the aliens are out there, and they have been visiting, they must be as f'ed up as we are. I mean, with all of their help and guidance, this is what we get? Come on aliens! Give us the good stuff!

I'd be even more stoked if whatever those things are were man made. Even if they were Chinese or Russian, it would give me hope that could become a multi planet species.

If these objects are otherworldly, they could be operating autonomously. There may be nothing organic inside, just like our primitive remote vehicles on mars.

It's bad news for us if they are occupied. Every time humans act together, they have relentlessly tried to conquer and destroy every other group of humans acting together since earliest recorded history.

Considering the level of "their" technology, we'd be easy pickings. Is the increasing rate of credible sightings a sign they found this planet and are sending more research crafts to figure out how smart or dumb we are and what resources from here they can use?

Primates with 99.9% of the DNA of humans are considered inferior animals and put in zoos to observe or use in experiments. It's dangerous to not be at the top of the food chain.

We don't want to meet anything from beyond our planet that got to us before we got to them. We'd be the inferior animal. Don't kid yourself, mankind is exploring space to find new places to colonize for resources, not to be a kindly species and live in harmony. We'd slaughter everything on a planet to get those resources and justify it using the one common goal of humanity -  wealth.

But, I doubt we'll get to that point. I think we'll be extinct before then. We'll be killed off by ourselves, someone else or something.

If they treat us as a food source we are seriously f’d. We could be hunted like we hunt birds, deer, etc. They could also begin farming us, or even trade with other galaxies for our teeth, eyes, testes, etc like some cultures do with exotic animals here in earth. Alien life holds a million possibilities for us, all but one or two scenarios spells the end of us.

Every planet within our reach has no water, no atmosphere, no plant life, no food source and is inhabitable without artificial life support. We’re way better off making the effort to not muck this place up.

Maybe they've behind all of the processed foods and snacks to fatten us up? It's certainly worked!

So you are saying if we just get rid of Fava beans and Chianti we'll be OK.

There are also some who believe that any civilization advanced enough to master the technology to travel and research us here, would be advanced well past the point of barbaric conquerings and such, and would likely be far more enlightened than us.

Even us now, we are starting to see the brutality in which we treat others (like orcas at Seaworld etc) and whether we should eat literally anything that's not us

A species 1M years more advanced than us could very theoretically have moved well past such things .

Or, all life in the universe exists to do one thing: replicate and compete for resources against other species (just like on earth). If those things are probes and say they've been here for hundreds of years... They could just be keeping an eye on us until the real armada shows up. If you were expanding into space, you're talking about distances that take hundreds to hundreds of thousands of years. You'd hate to send an armada on a 1000 year journey and then have locals have exponential technology growth.

There's too much to read lol . I will check it out!

It's possible, anything is possible. I mentioned earlier in the thread the time aspect of this is such an X factor. The speed of light is so very limiting, given the size of the universe. How another civilization would get to us in the first place is almost as important as what their intentions might be

Yes and no. If there was some way to generate the energy, travelling at 99.9% the speed of light, the 4.3 light year journey to the nearest star would take 2 weeks in ship time, 4.3 years in earth time. If you could travel at 99.9% you could go anywhere. You'd just never see your loved ones again.

Recommend this for anyone into sci-fi at all (which I assume is almost anyone who would click on this thread lol)... Great trilogy.

Also recommend the Kim Stanley Robinson "Mars" trilogy. Nothing to do with aliens but one of the best hard sci-fi series I've read in years.

I would say the mainstream news is fighting for eyeballs like everyone else - and they occasionally take a page out of the "Weekly World News" playbook to bump ratings. If there were anything real here, the story would have lasted longer than two days.

Dune is an epic If you have the time to devote to it. The Forever War is a good read. Both read when I was a teenager, but both works stay with me after all these years. Another author who was amazing is Asimov. The Foundation Trilogy is a mind bender.

The vastness of the universe makes it very likely there are innumerable other inhabited planets. That they would choose to do fly-bys on our little globe and put on jazzy light shows is equally unlikely.

I think Gary Larson had the best perspective of otherworldly visitors.

My consensus has always been that most, if not all, crafts like the ones in the Navy video are top secret man made tech.

Made by who? Hard to believe China or Russia are that far ahead of us

Biggest argument for the existence of intelligent alien life is merely the numbers involved... The galaxy is a gigantic place and the universe even bigger... Just by the odds you'd think intelligent alien life should be commonplace.

Biggest argument against is the Fermi Paradox... If the numbers are so large and the probabilities are so high... Why haven't we heard of them? Even radio broadcasts much less visits from beyond--why don't we have even a shred of direct evidence?

Maybe they consider us as ants, kind of interesting to watch us scurry around but of no real interest or value

Ok, so, I don’t think those ufos are aliens.

Cause the nearest “habitable” planets are light years away.

So, these aliens have to travel the speed of light or close enough which means their tech is off the hook and not these junky looking “ufos” we are seeing.

In fact, we wouldn’t see anything. Think about it. We have “stealth” tech. Imagine the stealth tech a civilization has that can make stuff that can travel

100,000,000/MPH

Most likely is, sure, there’s aliens but

They travelled here without anyone knowing and live next door to you in disguise!
