This weekends race is going to be amazing. There is nearly a 4 way fight for first if Ferrari and McLaren get it dialed. Monaco was crazy.

I haven't been this excited about F1 in a while because the last 7 years have been all Mercedes.

I stopped watching in 2001 when they started using telemetry. Ruined the sport. Back in my day we relied on the drivers for feedback! All of these darn technological advancements in sports. Unwatchable! 😂 JK, I enjoy F1 and especially enjoyed the F1 series on Netflix!

The wife started watching the Netflix series at the start of the pandemic and got hooked. I didn't even know they had made a series before that. I really enjoyed the series.

I'm just pulling for these young guys that are coming up.

I really enjoy F1 but have not watched it in years.  I was huge Senna fan and still watch documentaries about him from time to time.  The things he did were amazing and it was truly a sad day for motorsports when he passed.

I got out of golf for about 20 years and drag raced and then road raced.  I have friends that were involved with a few nascar teams and nhra super stock and competition eliminator teams.  The fella that did all of our crankshaft work was an engine builder for one of the top nascar teams in the 80's and built the engines for Ford's IMSA efforts in the early 80's with the Boss 302's in Foxbody Mustangs.  We were talking one evening about technological advances in valvetrains that were allowing the cup cars and NHRA pro stock to turn 10,000+ rpms before limits were put in place...  he said something along the lines that this "new" technology is 20+ year old outdated F1 technology.

I grew up watching Senna, he is the GOAT. Next year there are some new regulations that might even the field a little more.

Red Bull about to start making Formula 1 engines, that's just silly. Mercedes doesn't want to lose to a drink company.

Apparently they have a deal through 2024 to continue to use Honda engines, but under their own banner.

They poached 15 top guys from Mercedes engine division, they are paying top dollar for the best talent and starting with the engine Honda gave them this year. Honda is going out HUGE.

Well there ya go! I think we all knew no way was Red Bull not going to have a plan to dominate! They definitely weren’t going to rely on those Renault engines.

Also Mazepin is the best gift F1 could ever ask for. He is the poster child for privilege and the only saving grace is he's on the worst team.

If he isn't the reason someone wins the championship, I'll be shocked.

Is he one of the drivers Haas was forced to use along with Schumacher if they wanted to procure the big sponsorship deal?

Billionaire dad's can gift their sons a seat on the F1 grid. Hamilton said it's a billionaires club now.

At least Stroll can drive. Dad bought a race team, then a car company to sponsor the race team. 🤣

Makes ya wonder when some mullti billionaire will buy an NFL team and anoint his son the starting QB after 2 years playing at a junior college! 😂

That's one crazy aspect of F1, there are only 20 seats on the he grid. There is a ton of you guys coming up quick and 3 seat (4 if you count Mick) are bought. I think Mazepin was 2nd in F2, but if you listen to him yelling at the engineer that he can't switch modes while driving at the same time at Monaco you realize just how unqualified he really is. The worst part is he knows Daddy will keep paying, so it seems like he's barely trying.

Not a huge fan anymore but i used to go to the Montreal Grand Prix every year pre-covid. My dad had tickets through his company when i was younger so i went every year. More recently my former company had a box there so i have been through that as well

I have also been to the Shanghai Grand Prix when i was in China.

I remember watching Fernando Alonso at the MTL event when he was like 18-19 and was a nobody. He went out first on the track one year during the time trials

Just started watching again this year after not watching for the last few. Quickly remembered why I liked it so much when I was younger and bought tickets for the US Grand Prix in October.

Last weekend was nutty. They need to do something about those damn tires. Mercedes still has an edge, but there are a couple hot teams with young and gifted drivers.

I think next year with even more leveling of the field, the real drivers will show up

I've been into it for about 5 years, and from what I've read, Pirelli has never been able to get the tires right.  Even before the last race's crap, a number of guys have said tire deg is too big of a factor in the races.  Obviously it will be a factor, but it plays way too much into it.

But given that the only time there was a challenger to Merc in my time Ferrari was pulling some crap, it's great to see some competition on the grid.  If Ricciardo can get a handle on his new car, McLaren might be able to make it a 3-horse race next season.

PVR is your friend.  If you are in the US, you are doubly lucky because a)spoilers are not necessarily something you have to work hard to avoid, and b)for now anyway, ESPN shows the race commercial free.  Here in Canada, TSN drops random commercials in there.  They will claim since it's split screen you won't miss any action, but it is almost more bothersome than a straight commercial.  So I end up FFing those stretches.  Get home from the golf course, I can zip through pre-race, listen to what I want to listen to/watch, get to the race, and then post race I can do the same as pre-race.  I tend not to listen to too many driver interviews, unless there was some kind of thing going on that makes it worthwhile.  Some of the pieces Sky does are pretty good(there was a great one for Murray Walker when they had the first race this season), so I like to give myself options.

Be advised though that Netflix has done a big job of creating drama where there is none.  Some drivers do hate each other, but for the most part, any animosity from that show is played up significantly.

Except Guenther.  🤪

Funny you should mention the drama; I particularly enjoy how much effort the Netflix folks put into pumping in drama that isn't there.  Being a casual F1 fan I kind of laugh at some of the Netflix stuff like "come on, seriously?"  The sport is interesting enough as it is and IMO watching just one Grand Prix its pretty apparent that they are all one giant family.  There's drama like there is in any large/dysfunctional family.

I think one thing that a newbie needs to do is have an interest in the midfield.  There are multiple races going on at once typically(the race itself obviously, then the next set of teams--referred to as F1.5 in some circles).  If one can see it that way there is plenty to enjoy.  If you only care about who crosses the line first, it can be difficult some weeks.

This week's race is at a track where last season's most boring race took place.  After turn 1, it was basically a procession, with no overtaking.  Hopefully that isn't the case this time.

I think the field this year is a lot more even and next year should be even better. When you have 4+ teams that can podium, it makes the race and points more interesting.

My wife got way into the series and has this hatred for Red Bull. 🤣

This weekend was a winner. Great qualifying, amazing racing. Down to the final lap, you can't ask for more drama than that.

One of the obscure facts was this was only the 10th time in history all cars entered finished the race.

I'm torn as to how great the race was, at least at the front.  It all came down to strategy/tire deg.  RB Managed to make the undercut work, but otherwise,  yeah he passed on him on the last laps, but he was passing him no matter what.

The most entertainment was Bottas' radio, imho.  Alonso had some good battling early on with Ricciardo, and the Ferrari results must be super alarming, but otherwise, I wasn't as hyped on it as a lot of guys.  And I'm someone whose favorite team is not Mercedes.  RB and Merc were close to a minute ahead of the rest of the field.

Also, did they end up taking out those yellow curbs that caused damage Friday?  Unless it was during one of the commercial breaks, I don't recall them mentioning them, and it sure seemed like guys were going off track at a decent clip.
