Trail leg and hip move

My early golf had lots of hip slide and “hula" knees. I had good hand eye coordination and made it work with good timing. Later I was taught to keep my L heal on the ground and turn into a flexed bent rear knee while trying to keep my knee from getting outside of my foot. I just turned 69 and have lost some flexibility and speed. My brother turned me on to this old Hogan/Snead/Nicklaus move where you let the trail knee straighten and the leg leans toward the target. I don’t know what you call it but back in the day it seemed to be frowned on and the associated with a reverse pivot. I gave this a try and immediately started hitting nice ball first shots with more speed. Sorry if this has been done before but my search did not find it. Anybody doing this move? And has it helped you?

100% , I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard a modern teacher tell someone to keep their trial leg in a “ sitting “ or bent position.  I cannot fathom how anyone swings that way.  If I keep my trail leg bent same as address even , which for me isn’t much , I lose all sense of power etc. and I’m just a dumb dumb who knows his own swing.

The worst "lesson" I ever got was from Jim Flick when I attended a Golf Digest school when I was in high school.  It was back before everyone used video, they had stop motion cameras that took several photos of your swing in sequence.

 

Anyway, when they were going over my swing, there were two things he focused in on was that my right leg at the top was too straight, and I took the club back a bit inside.  He really focused on the right leg flex.  I still have the pictures, he drew on them showing what he didn't like.  I focused on the straight leg afterword and keeping the flex in my knee, I believe to this day it ruined my lower body action, something I have been fighting ever since.   What it did was restrict my hip turn, which eventually led me down to all sorts of ugly paths. At the time, my right leg looked more like Sam Snead here:

Later I ended up making what I call  a "flat" hip and shoulder turn, which led eventually to early extension.  And I must thank Monte's videos for helping me over the years to see what was really wrong with this action.

Just got back from a lesson with @MonteScheinblum 

This move that is in his Instagram post above will fix my early extension and cast. Just in the lesson there was improvement, who knows what can be accomplished after 10,000 reps.

 

The feeling of this to me is crazy, but that first weight transfer is key. I have to make the shift and then feel like I pivot into my left side, it’s like I start the transition as soon as I start going back.

I just started focusing improving my right hip motion a week or so ago.  I 100% agree with your comment.  It’s like it automates the pressure shift.  Very cool.

You are correct in your revelation as the hips cannot rotate without flexion in one knee and extension of the other.  All it does is restrict movement and open up the golfer for injury.  It is different from S&T though because their is still a pressure and weight shift to the trail leg in he backswing whereas I believe that S&T says to keep your pressure and weight on the lead side in the backswing which you can kind of get away with in the backswing but will restrict the downswing.

You are correct, at least for me, S&T sort of looks similar, but it it where the weight loads in the backswing and transitions to the left side in the downswing where it differs for me.  I messed around with it for a while about 10 years ago, could hit some nice mid and short irons, but my long clubs were sort of ugly, shorter and more crooked.    I found that I ended up sort of just posting up on my left side as I came down, and I got very steep. The difference is that since your hips are tilted at address, to rotate around the plane on the backswing the right must go "up" slightly going back while the left goes "down".  And they reverse on the downswing, I never did the reverse of the left hip going up  with S&T.  To me it is a less athletic motion, and doesn't use ground forces/legs effectively.
