Took golf way too serious, seemed to never fully enjoy the "game". Took a $600 lesson from a Top 50 teacher and my game went to pot. Shanks drove me away from the game.

Started fishing. I can go out and not catch a thing and at least enjoy the outdoors. Been several years since I golfed even 9 holes.

Now my son is in high school and he loves it. I really should start playing again, but I'm not even close to where I was 10 years ago.

I love golf yet I hate golf...

Can relate to the serious part--- Yep for years I bounced on and off mini tours and big money matches-- Got to the point I hated golf----- Now I am having the most fun with golf than I ever had. I hardly practice and play when I want to and play my older vintage stuff-- Have hit the range a little more lately due to rehabbing from a broken back and shoulder last year. Hoping by the end of summer I may be able to swing my steel shafted persimmon headed woods again

Not quite sure picked up golf as a hobby a few years ago, other than that my hobbies are video games and going to the gym. Well the gym has been closed for over a year cause of the pandemic and my PS4 has been broken for a few months now and the PS5 hasn't been in stock for a long time. So that means more time for golf? I f'ing wish, can't get tee times, driving ranges packed like Woodstock, short golf season in Canada.

I think I need to find a hobby that I can actually do, enjoy and destress.

Rising college sophomore and a D1 tennis player here.  I also play guitar everyday seriously.  I start playing tennis at a very early age and spent a year a tennis academy in Naples Florida.  However, I am seriously questioning whether I should play D1 tennis for the next three years since I discover golf with my father.  I am not on any tennis scholarship so it doesn't matter whether or not I play.  I just find golf to be much more interesting.  I've not touched the tennis racquet for almost four weeks now and I am not missing it at all.  I've been playing golf everyday since the beginning of May.  My father is very happy with that because he thinks it will be good for my future career.

Sort of kind of gave up skiing. I guess they don't really intersect but life got in the way of the slopes. I've been fortunate enough to have a few days where I've skied in the morning and played golf in the afternoon. Those were good days. I've given up the game at different points for one reason or another but seem to find a way back to it. Haven't played much since the beginning of May, just life stresses and such.

I have given up golf for other hobbies over the year, but never given up anything for golf.  I'll probably give it up again down the road once my limited skill declines.  While I envy the guys in their 70's and 80's who get out there and do it all the time, I don't really have any interest myself in playing the game at that level, I have plenty of other hobbies and social outlets that I'll enjoy more in my older years.

Give up completely? Not really. I still ski bike and play tennis. But I have shifted time around and golf gets its fair share.

Fly fishing has sort of tailed off dramatically, but I intend to rectify that as I still have evenings where I'm not doing anything else and could easily be on the stream. Maybe even tonight?

Video games are the big one, especially now that work eats up most of the time and I'm looking to get back into competing and trying to grind swing changes. Golf will probably always be #1 for me.

I don't have time for much in the way of non-golf hobbies. But before I played golf I'm not sure I really spent much time in hobbies either. Golf tended to replace time I'd have been sitting on the sofa like a lump or just piddling around the house.

This is an interesting topic to me. I have had 2 main hobbies since I was a kid, golf and motorcycles. One of them always seems to be front and center while one fades into the background.

I grew up racing bmx and riding dirt bikes. In high school I learned to play golf and stopped riding bikes/dirt bikes. I played golf casually through college, then graduated, got a job and immediately bought a motorcycle (street bike) and rode a lot for a couple years and basically quit golfing. This sort of back and forth has continued throughout my life. The past couple of years I've spent mostly riding and not playing much golf. Wouldn't you know it, this spring golf is shoving it's way back in. I'm buying clubs, joined a league and figuring out when I can play. I've only been on the bike once since last Nov.

I will say though that since college I tend to leave golf because of time constraints and frustration/lack of enjoyment. Golf takes considerable amount of time to play (I don't particularly like playing 9 holes). I also need to play fairly often to play reasonably well. That means a lot of time needs to be devoted for me to really enjoy golf. Those issues don't seem to arise with motorcycles. I can just hop on for an hour ride once or twice a week and be happy.

I think all my competitive sports have gone by the wayside once I accepted golf was my game when I was 19

The sports I used to compete in … cross country running, soccer, squash, martial arts, hockey, football all got pushed to the side.   I was by far the best at golf (starting at 13 and I knew I could play for life)

Tried tennis and lacrosse and baseball and racketball …. but wasn’t my thing

I do lift weights again and fish a little, but it is mostly golf, both playing and practicing.  Pursuing scratch again is fun and I love the camaraderie and cash games with all my reprobate friends

Summers have been incredibly busy since moving into a house with a pool...as part of our living arrangement with my wife's family (I'll spare y'all the boring details of the whole situation) we're expected to keep the pool ready to go in case any of the family stop by.

So, this year, I've spent less and less time on a longboard/skateboard than previous years - started a new job, started going back to school, and the aforementioned family obligations.  I have been throwing my clubs in the car and hitting a quick nine once a week or so, but most of my longboards are still in the basement from over the winter.  Getting a quick solo nine in only adds an hour and a half to my errands while I'm out of the house, so it's not a huge deal.

I am on/off with golf.  I will play for about a year or two, then quit for a while and then start again.

I believe I am on my fourth hiatus from the game.  Once the courses began to open from the flu lockdown, I began hitting balls again after a long break.

Being at the course on the range and putting green made me realize how much I like playing the game but HATE playing here where I live; too crowded, too long to play, etc.  Along with that, it's too hot to play here in the summer and I can't stand desert courses.  If you watched the NCAA tournament played in Arizona, that is what we have out here.

So I gave up golf once again, bought a mountain bike and a skateboard and really could not be happier.  (Mid 40's riding a skateboard; picture that.)

Perhaps one day I will be able to move to NC or SC and get to play golf courses that appeal to me.

Respectfully, it is definitely not too hot to play golf in Phoenix in the summer. I have a tee time at Sterling Grove around lunchtime today. It’s a matter of desire.

Yeah, basically everything.

Early AM tee times made hangovers impossible. Smoking same. Are those hobbies?

😉

But seriously, work kids family golf. I'd need to be independently wealthy to have more time to do anything else.

Just giving up other things in general. Used to do a lot of shooting, hunting, reloading, hiking, fishing, you name it. There’s a LOT of rabbit holes out there. Out of all of them, golf is the easiest to put down and pick back up. Throw the clubs in the car and go. No license, no “season”, no real preparation needed. You can plan a huge golf vacation, spend an afternoon on the course, or a 30 minute “mind cleaning” on the putting green. Or anything in between.

I’m in a minimalist mindset these days, 80% return on 20% investment. Hobby “stuff” laying around is like dollar bills and reminder that life and priorities change. I don’t torture myself worrying about what I “used to do” but appreciate what I am doing. Sold all my bow hunting equipment this week to a young fella who couldn’t have been more excited to buy it. It was a nice cleansing. Made room for a new Scotty Cameron putter too!

My new rule of thumb is only things that my wife and I do together. We love the beach and she just got her first set of clubs.

We’re riding into the sunset with golf clubs and saltwater fishing gear.....

Golf is the only thing that's held my interest over time.

Prior to golf I was at a high level in long range shooting.  One 9 hole scramble with work people and I gave it up.  All just to really suck at golf, lol.

I had a brief (5 years) interlude with building, tuning, and racing cars but golf came back to me.

I feel that golf is something I will never conquer.  However, it's something I will keep trying to perfect because I can't figure it out at level I want to.

Mostly Wishon with a few Tour Edge Exotics, Cobra, Cleveland, and one Odyssey mixed in.

I grew up playing golf from roughly 5 years old. Went to college, didn't have much money to play as the parents quit paying. I was a PGA apprentice for 2.5 years. Got out and was convincing myself that I couldn't afford it right now or for the foreseeable future. Picked up mountain biking, target shooting, woodworking, and fly fishing.

Took a moment and looked at what I was spending on those. Realized that I was just trying to convince myself that I couldn't make my one life long passion work. Called bullxxxx on the whole thing. Sold the bike, some guns, and the fly fishing gear hasn't seen the light of day in 3 years.

I put them all on the sidelines and it was the best decision I have ever made. Back to what I always have loved and at a cheaper price than all the others anyways.

It's hell getting wiser and realizing your younger dumbass mistakes.
