Have you given up other hobbies for golf?

Former D2 tennis player who has played 5.0 USTA but mostly 4.5 as I’ve gotten older.

 

Im still on tennis teams, but I put myself down as last resort. I never attended practices either.

 

I also had a custom guitar luthier shop that I shut down so that I can spend more time playing golf.

 

Once it takes ahold of you, there is no point in fighting it.

Guitars is another hobby of mine. Did you build professionally or more of a hobby?

Professionally, but I only sold about 20 before I hung it up. It did start as a hobby, but once I got to the point where I could build something better than what you would find on a store’s wall, I started selling them.

 

At the beginning of Covid, I started getting a lot more work than I could handle. It made it impossible to keep my regular job and keep up. I’m not much of a gambler so I chose the more stable option.

God damn! That last one with the fishmans is even crazier than the neck through you sent me.... the forearm contour is so cool, obviously seen it done before but the thick masked area that gives it the double effect is beyond awesome.

The magic recipe to making this all work is finding a job that pays you well enough to join a private club, but give your the flexibility to play when ever you want, especially during the week….

I gave up bowling. Been doing it for 25 years. Just not into it anymore. I've shot honor scores, won leagues, gone to nationals. Told my buds to call me if they need a sub but haven't made an effort to go.

Indeed. I have one leg in that boat, but it’s not quite as much as I’d like. I do get to play minimum 4 days a week, but not now with the time change. Im stuck with one maybe round a week depending on the weather.

 

But yeah, you make yourself bulletproof in your profession by grinding those first 20 or so years and coast the rest of the way to shore.

My other hobby is astronomy/astrophotography.  I only play golf during the day and only AP at night 🙂

 

They both involve shooting at targets and both are challenging to learn.

Seems my hobbies intertwine with my job. I like anything mechanical. Industrial repair, including machines (woodworking, injection moulding, machine tools, hydraulics, etc) forklift repair (collect an use old forklifts) rebuild machinery, almost done setting up my architectural millwork shop after 7 years of trying to do so. I have equipment from the 1870s through the 1970s that I use.  3 teenagers and a farm house I'm 50% done completely rebuilding. 

 

Golf just happens to be my only mental brake.  I can block out everything to just focus on my time there.

Just set this thing up, quick coat of paint, scraped an adjusted shims on a couple bearings, wired up and running again. It's 126 years old.

Sorry, didn’t read the whole thread.  As I get older, a lot of hobbys fade.  I used to do everything and anything, home Reno’s? sorry I’m tired of hanging and taping drywall. Classic car restoration and repair? Sorry I’m tired of lying on my back on a cold concrete floor. Collecting unique items, sorry I can’t get rid of all the stuff fast enough,  furniture restoration and repair? Sorry, I can get a perfectly good chair at IKEA.  
 

Golf, what a great place to be , outdoors, fresh air, testing your skills, repartee with good friends, an ale in the clubhouse after , and a good sleep at night. What time are we playing tomorrow?

Reason why I stopped playing Beer-league hockey. We played Friday nights and it seemed like 1/4 of the guys are complete lunatics, taking out a week's worth of work-anger on anyone around. Half the league can't skate backwards, but you know damn well that every game is going to have a fight.

I would love to play on a men’s huff and puff league as I played growing up. Problem is about 5 1/2 years ago we moved to a small town in a rural area that does not have an ice rink. The closest ice rink is an hour and a half away. I would’ve loved to have my kids ice-skating or my son in hockey and me playing in a huff and puff league but it’s not in the cards. Probably better for my L5-S1 spinal fusion. Lol. Of course golf is good for that right? Lol.
