LPGA Morgan Pressel as commentator

Morgan Pressel is still learning her relatively new job as an announcer. Perhaps a little too technical in her analysis. Folks watching golf on TV  are golfers themselves. She will learn!

Would love to see her replaced with well basically anybody. But Juli Inkster would be awesome, she was easy to listen to watching the Womens Amateur this past weekend and had some great input.. Thought she did a great job.

I thought Juli did a decent job but I do not think I'd be a fan of having her be a full time analyst.

 

They have not yet located the next Judy Rankin, unfortunately.

Well you may be right on that as far as full time. But she is night and day better and easier to listen to than that babbling Pressel.

 

And I agree on replacing Rankin, probably an impossible task.

 

I know a lot of guys here don't like Johnny Miller but man he was great. Another one that will be hard to replace.

I think a big problem is that those doing the locating think that what made Rankin the best is no longer the current style, or that it's passe.  Do you ever notice how announcers always speak in absolutes, or emphatic statements?  They can't just agree, they must say "Absolutely!" or "100 % right on!"  

 

There are certainly issues with many of these announcers, none of which should be ignored, but I think there are issues with the people behind the scenes giving direction as well.

I was very pleased to see that Morgan was not commentator on the European leg of the LPGA tour. I was hoping that the person in charge of hiring the U.S. commentators would notice that there are a lot of people who find her commentary and grating voice annoying and replace her. I really have no hard feelings toward her personally I just find that the British lady who occasionally shares commentary is is much more pleasing to listen to. I am almost to the point of watching the LPGA with the sound off when Morgan is in the chair.

I am not sure what the numbers are, but my feelings are the opposite to yours! Morgan is fine.

 

No one in this world irks me more than Richard Kaufman, and Kate Burton isn't far behind. The entire European leg of the LPGA is torture, and I yearn for Morgan and co. I've warmed a little to Trish Johnson, but to be fair, I think she lifted her game a bit. The Aussies on the Asian leg all have serious issues too, in my opinion.

I love Judy Rankin too, for the same reasons, I guess. But going back 6-7 years even Judy had her detractors on these forums, and the epithet "Granma Judy" wasn't always applied affectionately. Many were ready to pronounce her as past her used-by date. We always look back more affectionately.

I wonder at one point they'll end up having a contributor of some kind, at least occasionally, who is a retired player from say Asia.  Karen/Tom occasionally come up with nuggets or reflect a slightly different viewpoint (not that too many people needed to be told that shy kids and "sweets" meant "candy"). Yeah, the job is difficult enough in one's first language but there's surely a lot of context, perspective, history, relationships that such a person could add. 

 

There was a time a few months ago when a GC interviewer began their question to a very prominent player with "after you've just had a week off".  It was a "huh?" moment as several posters on this board had been discussing that player as playing in Asia; the player corrected the interviewer. Maybe that's just sloppy preparation but a broader take on things wouldn't hurt.

I don't mind Morgan too much but she will be much better when she learns that often less is more and you really don't need to say something about everything.

Anything with ears that work would say exactly the same. I find it insane that it’s gone on for so long. Find me one thing—man or beast—that isn’t victimized by it.

She is absolutely terrible! She talks way too loud and has this screechy annoying voice. I have to put it on mute when she talks. I shouldn’t have to do that!

I died laughing when she was saying a player sets up putts extremely vertical and upright. That player was Jiaya Shin. Shes only putting upright if you compare her to Michelle Wie's table top style.

"Didn't look like Jack hit that putt solid but he's the best at being positive with every swing. Putt might be a little short but still rolling. Might be that new large head putter he's using, makes up for mishits. I'm sure he read the double break on this putt since he has played at Augusta so often. And also the courses they play in the Ryder cup often have tricky greens. Maybe even back when he played at Ohio State. I know working with Jack Grout would have taught him how to read greens.

Oh look . .  a squirrel. Jack also has his son on the bag this week, that will help give him confidence. Putt is picking up speed now as it cleared the little ridge at about the 3 quarter mark. You can tell it's now rolling with the grain, the grass color is different. Jack practices a lot in Florida and the grasses are a lot the same there as here. Was that a little gust of wind? If the putt is not hit 100% pure a little wind can knock the ball offline. Crowd is starting to rise now to get a better look as Jack's putt gets closer to the hole. It's impressive to see how many of the patrons are rooting for Jack today. When he first started on tour he wasn't that well liked. It was Arnie's tour and Jack was kinda the villain. Hope that squirrel is safe. Jack is starting to raise his left arm, he does that preparing to celebrate when he thinks the putt is going in. And it's in. The patrons approve. Now he just needs to make sure he doesn't bogey 18, it's been playing difficult this week. In fact the 18th hole is . . . ."

Funniest part is how often she ends up interrupting the other announcers... despite the broadcasts being much more "European" style with less banter than PGA coverage. Pretty sure the politeness of the ladies side of things will keep her from getting the boot like Azinger, though.

Personally I’d much rather listen to the commentators on the JLPGA events versus having to endure listening to MP.  

 

And yes…other than “par”, “birdie”, “fairway”, “bogey” and “nice putt” I have no earthly idea what they’re saying. 😂

Morgan seems like a very nice person and knowledgeable about the game, however her voice is hard to listen to. She was blessed with a decent golf game but should have gone in a different direction after retiring. Her voice, unfortunately, does not translate well as a commentator. I find if hard to watch coverage whenever she speaks. Her voice is grating. Sorry Morgan but the Golf Channel needs to find a different role for you.
