Mixed Tour event

I was watching the mixed tour event that Stenson and Annika are hosting in Sweden.  Right now a woman is leading the event and there are others on the leaderboard.  Obviously the woman would be playing shorter yardages.  One of the comments made which I found interesting was that because of the set up, the women had to use more strategy than the men.  

 

If the PGA tour and LPGA did an event like this, do you think any woman would finish in the top 30?

Depends on the tees and the length of the rough.

 

Tomorrow will be interesting because strong winds are forecast. Judging by the leaderboard the course setup is fairly balanced so far.

I've wondered what is the fairest way to equalize the length advantage that men have for a given course, to be played against women, and have come to the conclusion that it is impossible.  If you try to set up the course by adjusting tee locations such that men and women will have the same distance for their second shot, then the men will still have the advantage as they would be hitting shorter irons.  If you set up the tees so that the women on average will be hitting the same club into greens that the men would, then surely they will be facing very different challenges off the tee and it wouldn't be fair that way.  A course would either have to be specifically designed to present the same challenges off the tee albeit from different tee boxes, and then to allow similar clubs be played into greens.  Would probably look pretty funky.  Alternatively, men could play limited flight balls that have the same spin characteristics as what they are used to, and everyone plays from the same tees.  That would be cool to see, too.

I don't believe people should get to into "whats fair" do your best at making it as even as possible. It's not like courses or yardages fit men or women they usually fit different types of golfers, this should be true for both females and males? I've really enjoyed watching this event and would love to see something similar on PGA/LPGA Tour aswell. In the end both fields boost some incredible players. I might also be a pig but there is something incredibly sexy watching a good female golfer, that mixed with the thrill of the game and excitement when watching larger PGA Tour events would be amazing.

 

In the end it all comes down to money from all perspectives broadcasting, sponsors, players etc. Not sure what coverage Scandinavian Mixed has got internationally (a 1 year old article on WRX isn't a good sign i guess) and a nice purse, equal to many European Tour events, for players. But I think you should be able to create a buzz about it and that way generate sponsors and so on.

We also have to remember that the discussion is not merger between female and men golf, it's possibly one or a few events per year. 

Anyone remember when Annika Sörenstam played @ the colonial. Really enjoyed that aswell 🙂

Long overdue. Make it official for both tours, not like the old silly season event where they had a PGA, LPGA, and "Senior" player on each team.

What I think would be fun to watch is a mixed doubles format with an alternating-type shot played from the PGA Tour tees.  The LPGA player will always tee off thus having the PGA player use the longer clubs in the bag (3-4 irons and hybrids) for the second shot; something we rarely see on the tour today.

I like your thinking, however I wonder how much it would affect the PGA guys.  I still think they would be hitting a mid iron instead of long iron.

They have given the women a massive advantage in terms of yardage. 
 

Most of them are taking a mid-iron into the Par 5’s for their second shot.

Seems the men are generally dealing with the wind better. So far anyway.

JcPenney Classic was a great mixed event played from 1960-1999.  Some real prominent names participated and won the event.

I wouldn't mind seeing that.

IMO The Olympics should've been team mixed(Male/Female) not just individual competition. 

That would have at least made it interesting

I’ve always thought the LPGA is underrated. Their swing speed and club specs are more in line with 90% of male golfers anyway. 

 

Best lesson I ever had was with a LPGA Pro.
