Swingyde

I’ve been playing golf for 50 years and my typical ball flight is a push draw. A couple of years ago I was hitting balls on the range with our state amateur champion and he was using a Swingyde. I asked him why? He said it reminds him of where his club needs to be. I’m a 4-handicap and this guy is a +3 so I figure there must be something to it. I couldn’t rationalize plopping down $35 for a piece of plastic that attaches to your club and pretty much forgot about it. Until last night when I saw one at Dick’s for $30 and figured, screw it, they got another sucker. I played my round of golf today and figured I’m all warmed up, let’s put this thing on my 7-iron and hit a small bag at the range. After a few practice swings to groove the feel of this piece of plastic wacking my forearm on the backswing and follow through, I dragged a ball over and took a swing. The ball flew high and straight as an arrow. Wow! I hit six more with the same results. No push, no draw, just straight and high. As long as the Swingyde hit my forearm on the backswing, the ball flew straight. I hit 20 balls. The results were a few draws, and one pull when the Swingyde missed my forearm on the follow through, but the rest were straight as an arrow. Instead of aiming right of the target and hoping I’d get the appropriate amount of draw, I simply picked a target and fired my 7-iron right at it. 
 

I have always played with a slightly cupped left wrist. This device forces me to flatten that wrist to make the Swingyde wack my forearm on the backswing. Tomorrow I plan to hit some balls with this device before going out for my Saturday morning round. If all goes well, aim and shoot!

 

Anyone else have experience with this device?

I got one maybe 20 years ago on the advice of the instructor that I was seeing at the time.  He said that it would provide a fix for my single biggest problem ie "the release."  He never could explain what he really meant by "the release" so I think pointing me to the Swingyde might have been an effort to shut me up.

 

Anyway, I practiced and practiced with it.  I was consistent in getting the position right on the backswing, but very inconsistent in getting the device to hit my L forearm on the follow through.  It seemed to me that to get it to hit my L forearm required making a much flatter swing, and while those swings were successful as far as the Swingyde position they were disasters as far as how the ball flew.  Like you I also cup my L wrist a little on the backswing and my natural shot is a draw but unlike you I'm nowhere close to a 4.

 

Anyway, glad that it works for you.  I'm still kind of mystified by it.

Very simple but effective device. 

Can really help if you struggle with a flip impact.

I played 27-holes yesterday. I made 3 birdies, 18 pars, and 6 bogeys. Three over par for 27-holes is excellent for me. I saw a change in shot shape. A typical round will see me hitting a draw primarily, with the occasional push-block (right miss), and the occasional hook (big left miss). After training the feel at the top of my backswing, produced by the Swingyde, yesterday I saw mostly straight shots with an occasional fade or draw. I hit one big hook on #8 and a slice on #12, but overall results were excellent. Let’s hope the honeymoon doesn’t end too soon. 😉
