Watching the Junior Am and now the US Am, I am impressed with how well spoken and composed these kids are in interviews.  I have not heard one say "well, like, I had , you know, a 6 iron and, you know, just like hit it close".  Some of their professional counterparts don't do as well.

Which Tour player often  says "like" ?

In general terms avid junior and collegiate players spend their youth at golf courses where they tend to observe and learn from adults.

Those kids spend ALL their free time at golf courses not the pickup basketball courts.....  golf courses got ancient old school pompous stuff going on

Go down to the pickup basketball courts and you'll hear a completely different dialogue from them kids....

Ernie Els. Dustin Johnson. Michelle Wie. Just 3 that came to mind without much effort. Dozens more I am certain.

Welcome to the real world where people, yes even young adults come from all walks of life.  I always say do not judge a book by it's cover and be enlightened by what the world and people have to offer.  😉

Is it necessary to call the educated use of language and the ability to articulate “pompous”.

Yes... it wasn’t language articulation that I was callin Pompous but the whole Golf Course experience that is very Pompous.... so not surprising kids that spend all their free time at courses can speak calmly and maturely....

And if you think golf aint Pompous then maybe you haven’t played many sports.... I’ve played almost every sport under the sun lol... 2nd place to Golf as far pompousicity as I’ve played would be Cricket 🏏... played on a cricket team in England for 5 years and boy very pompous air about that sport too... sure not like them pickup basketball courts I played on that would make a nun blush 🤣🤣

I'd say probably a high percentage of the participants of the US Junior/US Am come from significantly wealthy families. So its a water effect, as stated above. Kids grown up around adults/parents who speak in a certain way, and they follow suit.

Basically, we're talking about a sport where you have to play just to practice. Not to mention most of the tournaments at that level require a lot of money for travel/equipment/teachers and such.

I'm not trying to say you could essentially buy your way into the US amateur, but its probably the highest level event you where money is a factor. For example, in basketball, if someone is more physically gifted than you they will mostly just be better. With golf, paying for a better teacher might give you a slight advantage, but that could just be enough.

Yes. Money is a huge factor in junior golf. Wealth has nothing to do with being able to speak proper english. Money is a huge factor in any youth sport at the highest level. However most of the ones given the best of everything usually fail at the high adult level.

I don’t know the percentage, but agree, in essence, with your post.

An excellent junior golfer could routinely be In a country club dining room having lunch with white collar professionals…

Prolly not the same experience as a top basketball or football prospect from a big urban school.

But, I think that young athletes, be the sport golf or football, who are committed and disciplined enough to attain recognition in their sport, are often going to be respectful and articulate in communicating with adults (and the media if they are at that level).

Agreed, but I also think by its nature, some parents won't let their kids play football because it poses a physical risk. Where as, something like golf, less physical.

Additionally, I would think there are a decent amount of players at the US amateur who come from upper middle to upper class households, and are basically already "set" in terms of their careers. I think of someone like Stewart Hagestad, is he phenomenal golfer, yes, but who knows what he would really do a pro. Meaning, pro golf is hard, two swings could be the difference between keeping your card and playing a lesser tour. He seems to be a in a good situation, why try to travel and have all the hassle, when he can probably work a pretty good job and have a great amateur career. Bringing it back, I think he probably had a lot set in place for that, versus probably a guy like a Tony Finau who grew up with lesser means (Tony seems like a good person, nothing against him).

I find the wealth disparity is more apparent at the college and elite am level than on tour.

It’s something the USGA and all governing bodies should be focused on addressing but instead the USGA act as agents of elite private clubs on the east coast

Definitely, I agree. I said in a prior post that high amateur level/college level golf is probably the sport with the most ability to buy your way into. But to make it on tour, the intangibles will always play out.

Also, I think for a lot, if not most, the tour is the best path to extreme wealth for some of the players. I know Mickelson has said that there were guys he played against in college who could probably play on tour, but didn't want to deal with the travel and had better options beside golf. I thats true for a lot of professional athletes. For example, there are probably more guys like Tony Finau trying to make it on tour then a Maverick McNealy.
