KFT Finals Championship

The top 25 from the regular season KFT points list earn a PGA Tour card, and the top 25 from the finals series (three events) also earn a card. The finals include the top 75 points leaders from the KFT regular season tour, PGA tour players who were 126-200 (if not exempt for the upcoming year), plus some medical exemptions and others (Zalatoris and others who earned FedEx cup points that would place them in the 126-200 category, for example). Most in the 126-200 category have some kind of conditional status on the tour, if not fully exempt because of previous wins. You can better your position for the priority ranking (which premium tournaments you could get into) by playing in the finals even though you may have earned a card via the regular season points. Top Finals player & top cumulative regular season/finals player each gain fully exempt status and a spot in the Players. The three finals events do not have reduced fields like the FedEx Cup playoffs. 

 

Notables in the field: several Euro/Asian players - Aphibarnrat, Lingmerth, Bezuidenhout; several former PGA tour players - Villegas, Hossler, etc.

The golf course today was relatively soft, seems like they’ve over watered it (over the last week or so).
 

Great planning there as it’s absolutely dumping tonight and into tomorrow from Ida.

 

Winning score should be around -20 given the soft conditions. 
 

Hoping my guy locks his card up

Yep been out on the KFT since the start of 2019.

 

The course after a downpour two nights ago was decent today. Not many mud balls and the course has sub air so the greens are firm.

Every Monday before a Korn Ferry Tour or PGA TOUR event 100s of players sign up all with the hope of a chance at chasing their dream. Before those hundreds more went to a pre-qualifier just hoping to qualify for the Monday qualifier. All doing so in search of one day pulling off a storybook run like Alex Smalley’s done the last month.  

A little less than 2 1/2 months ago, Smalley, 24, played a mini-tour event. On Sunday, he locked up one of the 25 PGA TOUR cards awarded during the Korn Ferry Tour Finals with a T4 at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship. It’s the type of crazy run from the minor leagues to the big show overnight that seems to only happen in golf. The opportunity to totally change your fortunes in a week that this game provides is also the reason so many pros continue to chase it.

 

In March of 2020, he successfully navigated Forme Tour Q-School for status, but then COVID happened, and the world shut down. His big break didn’t come until September of 2020 when he got a sponsor’s invite into the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, where he finished T14. He got another sponsors invite to that event in March and finished T22. That put the path he’s taken now into his head of earning enough non-member FedExCup points to play his way into the Korn Ferry Tour Finals in hopes of either full Korn Ferry Tour membership or a TOUR card. So, he aggressively chased Monday qualifiers in a bid to accumulate points.

19 yo Akshay Bhatia is 6 back at -3 ... imagine he has to finish fairly high, along the lines of a top 5 or better, to have a chance to finish top 25 in the finals, since he's missed two cuts of the three tournament series ...
