Callaway wedge reshaft: steel to graphite

Just arrived: My Callaway Mavrik MAX irons 5-PW in the PX Catalyst 65 5.5 (parallel tip) with shaft a weight of ~ 68 grams (trimmed). Got fitted when Callaway rep visited our club.

I plan to keep my three current MD3 and MD4 wedges, as the 48* and 54* match the GW and SW lofts in MAX. The 48* has an R-flex KBS Tour R-flex shaft (110 grams) and the two MD4s have the stock TT Tour Issue.115 shafts. (The MD3 and MD4 are taper tips).

To save money and because the MDs have low trade-in value, I want to reshaft the three wedges in graphite. I'm thinking about SteelFiber 80CW 85 grams (R-flex) or Recoil 80 graphite at 80 grams (F3 or F4), or Recoil 95 at 95 grams (F3).

I have hit the Recoil 95 in three different Callaway iron models, and seemed to get good launch from it. But due to COVID and shortage of shafts and clubs, I'm at a loss on how to pretest these shafts.

Now I'm into graphite, would 68-gram iron shafts be too much lighter than 95-gram Recoils? Or would 85-gram shafts be too much of a falloff in wedges, from the weight of the > 110-gram steel?

Any idea on how to approach this?

Call always stock wedge graphite is Catalyst 80, why not go that route? Should match the feel of your irons

I sent an e-mail to True Temper about availability of PX Catalyst 80CW. GolfWorks and Hireko don't stock it. A shop in Fresno had a scattering of Catalyst shafts, but the wedge options were sold out except in really heavy weights.

Cat 80 would be the best bet - if I could find any.

I play the Tom Wishon Black graphite shaft in a wedge and it works really well with my Wishon White graphite shafts in my irons and Driver. The Wishon Black shaft is 85 grams and I play the regular flex along with the regular flex in my irons. I have to confess though that I'm back to using the stock dynamic gold 115 g stiff shaft in a Taylormade Milled Grind

56* sand wedge right now with great success.

Have you checked Billy Bob's?

edit: checked, they have the Catalyst 80, but only in 6.0 or 6.5 flex.

another edit: I believe Golfworks will special order tapered versions of the 760 or 780 Recoils for you. could be worth an ask?

Didn't do Billy Bob's, but I did find a shop in Fresno that had the Catalyst 80CW in taper. I got 6.0 flex, but selected ae 9i tipping to soften the launch a bit. ETA is Thurs., Oct. 4, three days after our club championship. (I will play tourney as final event for my 95-gram shafted irons, and my 110-gram shafted wedges).

Recoils? Callaway offered to do a reshaft with 460 ES taper tips, but they actually weigh a couple of grams less than the Catalyst 65s in the new irons.

End view: I probably should have just skipped the 2021 golf season. Getting new clubs (with graphite shafts) was a zoo, and I could have killed off a couple of nagging real-world projects.
