Gripping correction for .595" butt diameter

I am going to reshaft my MD3 and MD4 wedges (taper tip) with Catalyst 80CW 6.0 graphite shafts. The spec sheet lists the Catalyst butt diameter as 0.595 inches.

 

My other clubs have shaft butt diameters of .600 inches.

 

What kind of correction do I need to make on regripping? Will an extra layer of tape take care of the slightly narrower butt diameter?

.005” is the thickness of a piece of paper.

According to this chart 0.005 inch grip tape will add 0.010 inch, so one wrap of grip tape will make the diameter go from 0.595 to 0.605.

There is no BU tape on the market to my knowledge thats thin enough here, (maybe cheap painters tape is that thin?) and you have to both measure grip weight, balance point and especially how long you stretch each grip if you want tolerances that tight, and even then you will probably not be able to make it due to tolerances, both in the grips themselves, the shafts actual butt size and how god we are putting them on. (measure grip size at 2-4-6-8 inches on your irons and see for yourself, they DO vary, and more than 0.005)

Most only read specs (if they even do that), only a few measure the actual butt, only a few of those who measure, measure the whole 10 inch of the butt like we should, and those who does know they are like loft and lie angles, they always vary a little, so if you want things to be "perfect", official specs will never do it for you, its actually the job YOU do from measurement to sorting and assembly that matters for the end product.

Everyone, thanks for pulling me back from the ledge. I now realize that .005 is not really something I can measure, or that I would notice as someone who shoots in the 80s.

 

Part of my frustration is that the Callaway custom fitting for my new Mav MAX 5i-PW was not really custom. Two drawbacks: I couldn't get the Catalyst-shafted irons bumped from D0 to D2 (+ head weights would delay production) and that I couldn't get guaranteed what grips I wanted (stock something... Midsize?). So, generic Standard grips sent in box, but on application +3 wraps thinner at bottom than normal Midsize. 

 

Early session with MAX irons show it's hard to feel when I'm at the top. Clubs are easier to swing "on tempo," but the left-right spray is bothersome. I'll need a lesson to check how I'm using the new irons, and I if I need a quick regrip.

 

Now, I'm trying to reshaft my MD3 and MD4 wedges which have grooves left. Goal: Also move them to graphite. I can do this for sub-$150, as opposed to ~ $170 per new MD5.

You shoot in the eighties; worry more about the indian than the arrow.

I'm 70 years old, have an arthritic hip, and need lighter weight arrows (shafts).   I'm losing distance with heavier steel shafts. Reshaft will put wedges into graphite also, along with new irons.

My statement had nothing to do with your need for lighter shafts; it was about your inane obsession with .005" of butt diameter.
