Bryson says he is now compressing dimple edges on putts

Bryson says he is now putting 5ft and in short putts better because he is compressing the dimple edges

🙄

https://golf.com/gear/bryson-dechambeau-short-putts-ball-dimples/?amp=1

“So I did some study and some research on the golf ball and the geometry of those dimples,” DeChambeau said on the podcast. “And so, and this is getting a bit technical, so the dimples, they have edges on them, right. And if you hit the dimple on the edge at the wrong angle, it can come off horizontally or vertically.”

“So the firmer you hit it, the more the golf ball compresses. So when you’re hitting something a lot harder, it’s compressing and it doesn’t come off at a weird angle. When you’re hitting it softer, like a 5-footer or like a 3-footer, you hit it a little bit off the edges, it can now come off line.”

Is it possible to putt a golf ball and not hit the edge of one of the dimples???  😜

Bryson is taking his eccentricity to a whole new level.

When I initially read the article I thought. This is the crap he comes up with in order to not take responsibility for missing putts.

Bad bunker shot- Worst bunkers on tour.

Not hitting fairways off the tee- The driver head sucks.

Miss a short putt- Damn putter head hit the edge of a dimple! Ugh. Add this to the list.

The day and age where one gives  honest criticism and you are either just a hater (🙄) or you’re letting someone live rent free in your head. Haha 😆

Can’t speak for anyone else. For me it’s more like he knocked on my door, tried to sell me a security system and he left. Hardly living rent free in my house or head. 🤣

Bryson is not pulling the info from thin air, he is basing it on science. He got the information from scientific studies that have been done on "dimple error". There is a fair amount of information on "dimple error". Notably Dave Pelz has information about dimple error in his book "The Putting Bible". Albeit it is a small error, for the best players in the world hitting thousands of putts and a missed putt could mean the difference between winning or making a cut and playing for millions of dollars, it does have some consideration. From what he said and what I read from Pelz, it seems like there are some strategies to help combat dimple error. To me, it is not much different than other errors the industry talks about like shaft puring, products to find center of gravity of golf ball, skidding of putts, etc.

http://www.physics.usyd.edu.au/~cross/GOLF/GOLF.htm

This is interesting data.

Now I have another excuse for missing short putts.  I can cite this paper as proof.

Seems like it'd be easy to test this "dimple effect" with a robot putter.

From a scientific standpoint, I wonder what the contact area is (in terms of dimples) for a die-in-the-hole speed putt vs a 17"-past-the-hole speed putt (which is the optimal speed according to Dave Pelz).  My guess is that both involve an area larger than one dimple including rims of dimple, and thus the effect is negligible for both speed types.

Although, can you imagine if TW and Jack knew about this.

They would have been really great on those 3 footers ; )

Someone should show Bryson the putter Tiger used for most his wins. That face is beat and has an obvious depression in it.

I actually have read that from Pelz.  One of the reasons I usually hit the ball so far away from the hole on approach.  So I can compress the dimples and negate the effect.

There's a better way! Personally, when I get a new box of golf balls, the first thing I do is take some medium-coarse sandpaper and rub all the edges off the dimples, until the ball is almost smooth. True, it is nearly impossible to put any spin on the ball, but that's a small price to pay for knowing my ball won't be a centimeter off line on a ten foot putt due to hitting the edge of a dimple.

Also, I realized a while ago that the grooves in my irons and wedges could produce unpredictable results. Sometimes when I swing lightly, only two of the grooves might come in contact with the ball, but when I swing hard and compress it a little, three grooves might make contact. I simply cannot tolerate that level of inconsistency, so I file all the grooves down and then sandblast the clubface until it is perfectly smooth.

Playing a golf ball with no dimples, and irons with no grooves effectively removes all variables that might affect the flight or the roll of the ball. And this is (of course) based on science!

He said this on a podcast...and I don’t think he was saying that he is going to compress short putts or hit them harder.

I think the point he was getting to is that he worked with Bridgestone to design the ball so this doesn’t happen or that he lines the ball up so that he doesn’t hit the edge incorrectly.
