Let's have a ball that Is "specially prepared for putting". A PXG "putting ball" sans those pesky dimples and decorated with a diamond-studded alignment line would be a commercial success. 

 

If you had read the thread, you would know that it was discussed that golf ball manufacturers understood this issue with dimples and did work to create a ball with symmetrical flat areas that would be aligned specifically for putting that would be within the rules.

 

The result is left as an exercise, which is something you enjoy doing with rules questions.

Oh dear, "from Asheville" isn't the same as "lives in Asheville." Dixie is less five miles from the city limits. 🙂

Lol.  Now that’s the truth if  it were ever told.  Asheville is surrounded by Dixie.  Over time all the herd seemed to corral itself up in that pinch point.    Happened in my lifetime.  Went from “ let’s go to Asheville for dinner Saturday  “ to “ don’t go farther up than Hendersonville after dark “.

From the video, he says hitting it firmer can help the dimple error effect from compressing the ball more. So I'm guessing, that softer cover balls (urethane) or softer putter faces (white hot) would help the issue as well. It is just splitting hairs for amateurs that have much more glaring issues in their putting stroke, but for the pros I can see them definitely thinking about it and finding a way to mitigate it. I not a pro, but heck yeah, I'm going to start hitting short putts more firm because I want to make more of those pesky 5 footers. 😂🤣😂

Oh wow. Thanks a lot Bwhizz for bringing this one back! 🙃 I for one didn’t miss it at all and am pretty sure (positive) @Soloman1 already covered the “roll a ball on a hardwood floor and watch how the dimples take it offline…” So yeah, we already all know that the dimples do indeed impact ball trajectory. That said, best of luck missing those dimple edges when you putt!  🙄 😂 And oh yeah, welcome to GolfWRX 😊

As if the hamster in my little brain wasn't working enough?!  Now I have to worry that my ball  has a thousand edges to deflect off?

 

On another note, I worked for Pelz in the 90's.  He had some crazy ideas.  This dimple thing being one of them.  

 

Irregardlessly (i know that's not a word but I like it),  I once watched Pelz make 300 7 footers in a row on a 

putting mat.  All of them rolling fairly slowly.  Seemed like the dimples had little affect.
