PXG Reshaft Help

So I purchased some new PXG Gen 2 during their super close out sale since they still had some laying around for us lefty's for a crazy deal. However, I didn't upgrade the shafts and left the Tour Elevate in them. After a couple of rounds I really don't think I get on with them.

I'm a 10 handicap, but have lacked consistent iron play which is why I got these (it's always the equipment, right?).  My driver speed is 113 on a natural swing, and I use X shaft for it and my 3 wood. I do tend to be a little more conservative with my irons, but I decided to get these in an X as well.

I think the Tour Elevate shafts tend to play a bit softer in an X than most others, but they just don't seem to go anywhere and I just sky the ball.  I want to go to a like an standard DG s300 shaft and hope they will bring the trajectory down and allow me to swing a bit more free. Does this seem like a good fit for that?

I've never re-shafted before as it seemed like getting new irons was just a bit more, but I do like the PXG heads. I found some s300's in .370 from eBay for $75, but should I also order new ferrules?

Any advice would help. Thanks!

Yes, order the specific PXG ferrules from Golfworks or BillyBobsGolf.

Both sell the 0.370” parallel tip ferrules as well as the 0.355” taper tip ferrules.

Both ferrules have a collar so they sit down in the hosel and the 0.355” taper tip ferrules include a plastic cap that you put on the tip end of the shaft to center the shaft within the 0.370” hosel.

Just had my PXG Gen4 XPs reshafted.  The bore on that hosel is, well to say the least, interesting.  The new shaft just wobbles around in there.  From what I have ready, and now experienced, you have to use a shim even when reshafting with the correct tip size.  If you plan on doing this yourself, just beware.

So it's not just .370 parallel? Awesome lol. Why must it be a pain. I wasn't planning on doing it myself, but I'm at a location where options are limited, and now I'm worried they may not get it right if it's not just straight forward.

It is very easy - if you have the right ferrules. I'm in Australia and I ordered both .370 and .355. Have the right ferrule and exactly the same as any other shaft. I recently did Gen 2 as well.

I also reshafted Gen1 when first came out. Absolute pain as did not have right ferrules (dont think anywhere had them) and had to shim all clubs. The ferrules just make so easy. You also get a cap for .355. to keep in place.

I've reshafted a few sets of PXGs.  The hosels are designed to accept .370 and .355 shafts.  As mentioned above, the PXG specific collared ferrules are what makes the difference.  Although the .355 still move around a bit even with the PXG specific ferrules.  I use clamps to limit movement while the epoxy sets.

I have a shop and build clubs as a side job.  Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

  • 3 months later...

I built another set a few days ago with .355 taper tip shafts and non-collared ferrules. This is the first set I’ve built using something other than PXG specific collared ferrules.

I used .355-.370 brass shims (Golf Works) and .355 ferrules which worked very well. There was very little movement once everything was assembled.

Thank you for that post Hot Rod because I am in a situation right now with a PXG 6 iron. A good friend of mine who did not need to be messing with clubs was going to try to reshaft that set. Got confused and messed it up. I have to try to put that club together to go with that set. My friend is dying now as we speak in fact they called Hospice in last night. I have to put it together to complete the set for his estate sale. He has quite a bit of stuff new and old and his family wants me to handle the liquidation for the estate etc. Good to know I can shim it up conventional style and have already checked and the older Callaway collared ferrules will fit fine. Have basically lined up a local club shop here for a lot of the stuff and he knows the situation. Do not want to mess with the Bay due to the tax form thing and an estate being involved--- Thanks again your post helped me in a tough situation
