Wow man, I mean, cool addition to the golf forum and all. I can certainly appreciate some high quality death metal. I've see Gwar live on several occasions and have a great appreciation for for pre-Black Album Metallica. 

 

But...I get the sense someone has done a random internet search....

While this post isn't really about indie/college rock per se but RIP to Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins who passed away at age 50 while on tour in South America.

 

He was a beast of a drummer. Saw him multiple times with Alanis Morissette and the Foo Fighters. Cause of death is unknown at this time however he has had certain personal issues in the past. Hopefully it's not related to them. RIP Taylor. Rock music lost another good one.

Yeah, man. Music wise, I pretty much despise Dave Grohl and Nirvana. I hold them at least partially responsible for ruining indie music. As a result, I could never could get behind Foo Fighters.

 

But it seems that Taylor Hawkins was a uniformly well liked and respected guy. Never saw him play live, but everyone I know says that you couldn't help but notice his enthusiasm for what he was doing and the love he seemed to have for people. Gotta respect that. 

 

One wonders what kind of guy he might have been if he wasn't on a pretty decent cocktail of drugs. And that's coming from a guy who doesn't mind a stiff drink or a nice bong hit. 

 

I wish people could stay away from the pills.

IMO his passing deserved its own topic. Almost started one a couple times but obviously never did. 😔 Thanks grm.  Very sad news.

I've been meaning to do this for awhile, but somehow never get around to it. I don't know, golf, work, kids, wife, volunteer work, war in Ukraine, society crumbling around me, Taylor Hawkins...

 

It's hard to focus on things. 

 

But, I've been wanting to post something about one of my personal favorites - Modest Mouse. They offer, in my opinion, a perfect blend of progressive musicality, thoughtful lyrics, and the ability to write a catchy song. 

 

The problem with that kind of music, of course, is that they don't hit perfection on every attempt. They produce a lot of unlistenable noise in the process. 

 

In that respect, they are kind of like golf. I remember perfect Modest Mouse songs the same way I remember a perfectly struck iron shot. They live with me for the rest of my life. They provide joy at times of weakness.

Yeah man, me too. I think from roughly 2001 - 2006 I saw them every time they played in Denver. Always an excellent show.

Absolutely. What made me think of them was, last time I saw them they were on the same bill as MM. They are wonderful live. Too many ppl on stage to count! 😂

Huge Big Thief fan - actually seeing them for the third time in person at the Athem in DC in mid April. The song above is great and their new album is fantastic. They are low fi, but put on a fantastic show. The smaller the venue you can find them in the better.

 

First time seeing this thread and glad I found it!

Yeah, this song in particular really grabbed me. The bridge/solo sections are mesmerizing - thin, complex riffs with the harmonics and everything - such cool stuff. I'd love to see them sometime.
